The study of biology connects us to the world in which we live and reminds us of the awe-inspiring intricacies of the Lord’s creation. From the largest ecosystem to the smallest microorganism, each organism and system is designed to seamlessly work together. So if you share an appreciation of wonders great and small, a biology major might be right for you.

You can anticipate learning both inside and outside of the typical classroom. Sure, you’ll attend lectures, but you’ll also participate in labs and field research to obtain hands-on experience. Many of the required classes are taken in the Concordia Center for Environmental Stewardship, a LEEDS Platinum facility designed specifically for laboratory courses that emphasize fieldwork and environmental ethics.

Over the course of your studies, you’ll take 49 credits of required coursework and 11 credits of related electives.  The required coursework provides a strong foundation in the biological sciences, while the elective coursework allows you the ability to tailor your major to your specific interests.

You will be well equipped for a wide variety of career choices to include graduate studies in any of the life sciences.  The biology major also serves an alternative to the biomedical sciences major for those of you who appreciate breadth in your biology education as you prepare for professions in the medical field, such as pharmacy or medical school.

More and more, actuaries use data analytics to help assess risk and inform policy. Concordia's new Actuarial & Data Sciences major meets the market's demands by preparing students with current, relevant knowledge and skills in both actuarial science and data analytics.

Actuarial science is an intense field, and will require a sharp, analytical mind, coupled with hard work and dedication to pass the certification exams and practice as an actuary. But it is a rewarding field, and in high demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay is over $110K, and the demand for actuaries is expected to increase 24% by 2030.

Actuaries assess risk to help make wise decisions for their organizations. Most actuaries work in insurance, but they can also work in finance, healthcare administration, wealth management, and any other industry where predictions and decisions must be made to mitigate risk.

Like all industries, the actuarial science profession is constantly changing to adapt to new technologies. With the computing capabilities that we now have, actuaries are increasingly dependent on data science and analytics. In 2021, the Society of Actuaries announced a change in their Associate of the SOA (ASA) education requirements, including an updated curriculum designed to meet employer and market demands for increased coverage of data analytics.

Concordia's new actuarial and data sciences major couples proven actuarial science methodologies with cutting edge data science technologies to thoroughly prepare tomorrow's actuaries with the skills needed to assess risk in the modern world.

In the psychology program, you’ll study the biological and psychological influences on the human mind. What makes our program unique? At CUW, our courses are grounded in science, ethical research, and Christian service. This translates to a holistic approach toward learning in which you first build up your knowledge in the classroom and then apply it in supervised, practical experience at local agencies and institutions. Toward the end of your studies (typically during your junior year), you’ll apply for senior status. Once approved, you can then enroll in Practicum, Research Proposal, and Senior Seminar. By the time you graduate, you’ll possess the skills and knowledge needed for graduate studies or to pursue a helping profession.  This program is also available as a minor.

During your time here, you’ll be introduced to topics like theories of personality, abnormal psychology, psychotherapy, and human behavior. Through it all, we’ll help you become familiar with the procedures, principles, theories, and vocabulary of psychology. This gives you the tools necessary for success. Each psychology class builds on and enhances the others. For example, learning about the developmental stages from conception to death is relevant when studying how individual preferences and worldviews are shaped. Similarly, properly interpreting research is key to using current therapy approaches in treating behavioral disorders. Outside of the classroom, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in numerous service endeavors in the community - so you can start making a positive impact before you frame that diploma.

By the end of the program, you’ll not only have a deep understanding of theories in psychology, you’ll have hands-on experience from your practicum and service learning efforts. You’ll be a stronger leader, a better writer and communicator, and a strategic problem solver. Whether you decide to go into counseling, clinical psychology, research, academia or another exciting profession, you’ll be prepared to change other’s lives for the better.

Diagnostic medical sonography (DMS) is a multi-specialty profession which utilizes high frequency sound waves to image the human body. Sonographers use their knowledge of anatomy, physiology and applied critical thinking to assess function and the presence of disease processes. Sonographers work under the guidance of an interpreting physician in a variety of health care settings. Concordia University offers a Bachelor’s Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. The degree includes two years of core requirements and prerequisite classes specific to the major.

This program isn’t all ones and zeroes, if that’s what you’re thinking. It’s actually a three-part curriculum that starts with a liberal arts core, moves on to lay a solid foundation in general business, and then offers specialized focus in finance. From accounting to economics and statistics, you’ll set the groundwork for a wide array of financial and business management topics. We’re talking the time value of money, interest rates, financial statements, capital allocation, stocks, bonds, derivatives, economic policy, international trade, foreign currency, regulation, and many others.

At the end of this program, you will know the ins and outs of business commerce you can apply all around the world. You will learn all levels of finance such as corporate and international and fundamental financial management and valuation principles. When you join the workforce you’ll be confident in commercial banking, financial markets, and monetary and fiscal policy.

Music therapy is the process of using music to aid changes in behavior and brain function in order to promote health and wellness. Our music therapy program is an equivalency program offered by CUW through Alverno College. What does that mean? You’ll benefit from a well-rounded Bachelor of Arts in Music degree through CUW, while earning a Music Therapy Equivalency Degree at Alverno College. This allows you to focus on the specific courses required to become a board certified music therapist. You will follow our liberal arts music curriculum and graduate from CUW with a music therapy concentration.

A key element of your studies is learning how to work within a multidisciplinary team in medical and psychiatric hospitals, hospice, schools, and clinics. A day in your future life could involve helping Alzheimer’s patients retain memories, Parkinson’s patients improve mobilities, infants reduce their stay in the neonatal ICU, and people suffering from depression deal with their symptoms.

Because of our partnership with Alverno College, you’ll be assisted in securing a top internship position to gain hands-on experience and build up your resume for the future. As a CUW student, you will be exposed to and have opportunities to participate in a wide range of musical ensembles including band, orchestra, choir, and handbells. Besides the regular classes, we have many student-led musical groups and events to enjoy throughout the school year. The liberal arts music major program offers you the chance to interact with and learn from other music students outside of the music therapy program.

This degree will prepare you to go out into the world and serve Christ through serving our neighbors. Often we are called to do this in a language other than English. As a graduate with a Spanish degree, you will be proficient in the language and be able to open more doors both in the employment sense, but perhaps more importantly in a Christian sense. You will be prepared to live a life of service to those in our community who speak Spanish as well as English.
As our population continues to get more diverse, an opportunity also continues to rise. Employers are reporting an urgent need for graduating students to be proficient in Spanish.  The United States Census Bureau reports that the Hispanic population will continue to be largest ethnic minority in the United States. By 2060, Hispanics will make up 28.6% of the U.S. population. As the Hispanic demographic continues to increase, our students who are proficient in the language will have an advantage in nearly every possible area of study and in life.

You will be able to explore all areas of the Spanish language through a variety of activities and experiences during your time in the program. Our small class sizes guarantee personal attention. We offer a variety of ways to use your language skills both on- and off-campus. We offer interdisciplinary volunteer events, Spanish Table, and Spanish Club on-campus. Other volunteer work and internships off-campus offer hands-on experiences in the surrounding Milwaukee community, the U.S. and also abroad. Through these experiences you’ll gain real-world confidence, skills, and experience in language use.

Many of our graduates have gone on in professions such as teaching, health care, mission work, international business, journalism, social services and much more.

The inter-related sports and entertainment industries show no signs of slowing down. The North American sports market alone will grow from $63.9 billion to $75.7 billion by 2020, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers. But that’s nothing compared to the global market. In 2016, the size of the sports industry was a whopping $1.3 trillion worldwide! So needless to say, there’s a demand for people with a degree in sport and entertainment business. Housed within the Batterman School of Business, our program let’s you pursue a variety of careers in athletic and entertainment management. Our curriculum is current, engaging, and challenging – with courses and experiences designed under the guidance of a professional advisory board consisting of industry practitioners – to help you develop the fundamentals, skills, and character that will give you the best chance to thrive in a competitive industry.

Not only that, but you’ll work with industry pros, networking with and learning from experts in professional and amature sports and entertainment, along with business people who work within the innumerable sub-professions tied to these industries. But nothing beats hands-on experience. If you display consistent professional and personal growth, you could earn intensive field experience opportunities at major events like the Rose Bowl, Final Four, Frozen Four, College World Series, COPA, and even the Super Bowl. That’s what we like to call a win/win.
It might be beneficial to first take a quick look at what to expect in this program: grueling two-a-days, endless ladders, extensive weight training … heck, you don’t even have to break a sweat earning this degree. Which isn’t to say the program is easy. Indeed, it’s challenging. But still, you catch the drift. You can pursue your goals through an undergraduate major or minor, the MBA concentration, or a professional certificate. Courses will focus on critical analysis, solution development, innovation, analytics, finance, teamwork development, leadership growth, and more.

How will you learn these crucial things? Through lectures, guest speakers, academic service learning, field experience, online/social media resources, and new technologies. So while the athletes are hitting the field, court, et al., working their butts off to make it to the next level, you’ll be setting yourself up for a long, successful career in sports and entertainment by hitting the books. Not bad.

There’s a lot that goes into the making of a good writer, and an MBA in Communications and Public Relations hits all the major topics: group dynamics, effective business writing, public relations, and public speaking. Additionally, you gain the benefit of having worldwide practitioners as your instructors, with a diverse student body and flexible courses that start at your convenience. You’ll sharpen your skills and become a confident, effective communicator that will stand out in the workforce.

At the end of this program, you’ll not only hone your communication skills and increase your understanding of the field, but you’ll also come out with experience applying today’s critical innovative business skills. You’ll be able to identify messages worth sharing, think strategically about your decisions, increase your financial competence, and be a leader among your colleagues. Whether you’re pitching a story to the media, presenting a new slogan, or reporting on analytics, you’ll know what to say and how to say it.

A good manager can adapt to almost any business structure in any industry. Because managerial skills are, for the most part, universal. This program will allow you to explore how businesses are structured and provide you with the skills you’ll need to succeed in almost any environment. You’ll gain mastery of current software for designing and managing business projects, while adopting proven project management tools and techniques at each stage in a project’s lifecycle. You’ll gain an understanding of how to integrate organizational strategies that involve the parent, supplier, and sub-supplier organizations working together in domestic and global environments.

You’ll also gain practical knowledge of marketing tools, market segmentation, research analysis in decision-making, media and promotion, budgeting, and evaluation. From developing a comprehensive and viable business plan to setting and obtaining investment objectives – such as capital, debt, securitization, and government subsidized options – this program will arm you with a variety of applicable skills. And you’ll learn about small businesses too, the way management is applied. Most importantly, you’ll acquire skills and experience that’ll help you become the well-rounded and insightful leader your organization deserves, whether you’re in small business, investments, or real estate.
