Graduate study in Recreation Administration prepares students for advanced careers in the field of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism. Through a combination of online and traditional classroom instruction, students explore the theoretical foundations of the field while developing the administrative and management skills needed to become managers of private, commercial, and public recreation agencies. Students may also focus on research design and methodology in preparation for a research-based position and/or doctoral studies.

Public administrators today are becoming increasingly aware of the fact that government is, indeed, the people’s business. They are challenged to be both effective and efficient. They believe that people tend to support what they help to create. Working with citizens, they have brought the practice of public management to its highest level without giving up the desire to constantly change and improve. The difference is that today’s public servants are recognized and rewarded in personal and material ways, making the study of public policy and administration a highly desirable career option.

The Graduate Center for Public Policy and Administration offers the Master of Public Administration degree; Options in the degree program include Public Works Administration and Urban Affairs; and graduate certificate programs exist in Employer-Employee Relations and Personnel Management, Public Management Analysis, and Public Sector Financial Management.

The Center’s graduate level programs are designed with a professional emphasis and a recognized need to provide course work that will increase the student’s competency in public administrative processes and analysis. The Center’s curriculum also is designed to emphasize the student’s ability to apply new knowledge, skills, and leadership techniques to the solution of public problems.

This master's degree provides foundations and practical skills for individuals seeking career growth in educational, corporate, and public service settings that use educational technologies including resources for e-learning and social media. The program prepares graduates for leadership roles in educational institutions and other agencies; it provides training in instructional design, multimedia development and management, and e-learning, and it builds a foundation for individuals planning to pursue doctoral degrees.

The Environmental Science and Policy (ES&P) degrees program is jointly housed in the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, reflecting its inherent interdisciplinary nature. A Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science as well as a minor are available.

We highly encourage B.A. students to seek a minor in a closely related discipline such as anthropology, economics, geography, international studies or political science.

The Communication Studies Department offers a Masters of Arts degree in Communication Studies. Our program provides students with advanced instruction in the major theories and research methods in the academic discipline of communication. Our graduates typically go on to doctoral programs or become communication instructors at the community college level. We provide students with a broad foundation in the discipline of communication. As such, we do not offer areas of specialty, but students can take a variety of elective courses.

The Bachelor of Music degree is a high-unit professional degree and requires 132 units for graduation. Music units include the core requirements and one option. Students interested in the BM program must successfully complete an audition for entrance to the program. This should be accomplished prior to entrance to the University. Students wishing to consider the BM program after they have enrolled at CSULB may not apply after they have completed more than a maximum of 96 units.

The Master of Science in Finance (MSF) program provides an intensive and fast-track 30-unit degree program to enable its cohort students to earn their graduate degree in 12 months. It is designed to help students identify and analyze various financial management issues to make optimal strategic decisions in today’s global economy. With its focus and alignment to the Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) curriculum, the program offers students an excellent opportunity to learn practical investment skills and a comparative advantage to ultimately earn the CFA charter, while attaining a reputable MSF degree.

The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design is comprised of 120 semester units. The program prepares designers for professional practice, whose function will be to help shape the products and systems produced by industrial processes. The curriculum includes studies in rapid visualization, aesthetics, materials and processes, presentation techniques, design methodology, product development, human factors, product costing, and financing principles. Students often have an opportunity to work directly with industry professionals through internships or as team members on sponsored projects. Participating companies have included Oakley, Xerox, Unisys, General Electric, Hewlett Packard, NCR, Apple, Chrysler, General Motors, Hitachi, Toyota, Kawasaki, InFocus, Compaq and Nike. Graduates have found positions in a wide variety of industries, including motion picture special effects, medical and dental equipment, computer and microchip technology, small appliances, as well as air, water and land transportation.

Exercise science centers on the effects of training and physical activity on the human body. Students will study the physiology, biomechanics, and motor control of exercise and how training can improve human function including health, disease, and performance. This option prepares students for careers in human movement and allied health fields as well as those interested in graduate work in these areas or those pursuing training in medicine and other healthcare professions.

The Sport and Exercise Psychology Master of Science program is designed to prepare students for careers in sport and exercise psychology, in particular as athletic performance enhancement specialists and/or as researchers and teachers in academic settings. The Sport and Exercise Psychology Master of Science program consists of 36 units. Students are required to take core classes, elective courses, and have the option to complete a thesis or comprehensive exam/capstone. Courses are designed to facilitate those seeking AASP certification and applied opportunities are available for students to accumulate mentored experience hours.
