The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) program aims to provide students with advanced training in sub-disciplines of mechanical engineering that combines modern engineering practice and rigorous theoretical framework to enhance students’ pursuit of professional careers and doctoral studies. The program involves application of mechanical engineering knowledge and skills to build students’ mastery in the areas of expertise in order to:

Utilize advanced theoretical techniques in the design and/or analysis of engineering systems;

Apply modern experimental and/or computational tools to design and/or simulate engineering systems;

Promote the field of study through research and/or development of novel engineering solutions.

The programs in chemistry and biochemistry at the bachelor’s degree level are planned to develop background in a specific science, to serve as preparation for graduate work in chemistry or biochemistry, and to provide a foundation for those students seeking careers in the chemical sciences, teaching, law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and other health?related professions, and in industrial and governmental scientific occupations.

This new degree program is aimed at pre-professional students, who will be able to use many professional school pre-requisites to fulfill their elective unit requirements

The WGSS Department recognizes that recent acts of racist terror committed under the authority of the police are only one example of the structural racism that characterizes this country. We stand committed to the mission of reconciliation and education that we see as essential to move in the direction of the eradication of the racism embedded in every institution that comprises the United States. Integral to that mission, we oppose militarism, dictatorship, and the abuse of power threatened by federal government. We encourage our students and alumni to continue their productive work towards racial justice.

The goal of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies is to analyze gender and sexuality as complex systems of power that are structured by race, ethnicity, nation, and class.

We are committed to teaching gender literacy as knowledge integral to civic literacy. From an interdisciplinary perspective, students explore a sophisticated body of knowledge and academic discipline to develop the skills for critical thinking and civic engagement.

This program offers two concentrations: Italian Language and Culture and Interdisciplinary Italian Studies. Regular consultation with advisor is highly recommended.

Students are strongly encouraged to study abroad through the CSU International Program in Florence, Italy or semester-long options in Rome and Venice; also highly recommended is a one-month summer study abroad in Recanati, Italy, that offers language and culture studies as well as internship opportunities. Students may find internships at Italian and Italian-American institutions in the Long Beach area.

Once students have met the first- and second-year general language requirements, in the third year they take a common set of core courses in the target language. In the fourth year they choose between the two concentrations. Students intending to earn the teaching credential select Concentration I: Italian Language and Culture; students interested in a more interdisciplinary approach select Concentration II: Interdisciplinary Italian Studies. Both tracks share a common core.

This master's degree provides foundations and practical skills for individuals seeking career growth in educational, corporate, and public service settings that use educational technologies including resources for e-learning and social media. The program prepares graduates for leadership roles in educational institutions and other agencies; it provides training in instructional design, multimedia development and management, and e-learning, and it builds a foundation for individuals planning to pursue doctoral degrees.

The Rhetoric and Composition option is designed for students who desire to write for multiple readers and to analyze and interpret texts. This option prepares students for teaching on virtually all levels, for graduate study in English, and for professions that require intensive writing and communication skills.

This degree is designed to prepare graduates for a variety of professional careers in the computer field. The curriculum is designed to provide a balance between the theoretical and practical aspects of computer science. Extensive laboratory time is required for these courses, and design and analysis experiences are emphasized.

The Bachelor of Music degree is a high-unit professional degree and requires 132 units for graduation. Music units include the core requirements and one option. Students interested in the BM program must successfully complete an audition for entrance to the program. This should be accomplished prior to entrance to the University. Students wishing to consider the BM program after they have enrolled at CSULB may not apply after they have completed more than a maximum of 96 units.

Film and Electronic Arts is an innovative program that emphasizes both theory and practice. Focusing on the integration of moving images, culture, and technology, the curriculum is designed to develop storytelling and production skills while providing a foundational education in the arts and humanities. Media history, theory, and aesthetics are taught as an integral part of production practices.

Student Development in Higher Education (SDHE) is a unique field of professional practice in U.S. higher education. The program prepares graduates to work in two- and four-year colleges and related institutions. The profession is focused on student-centered learning, drawing upon an established and growing body of research, based in traditional disciplines, emerging theoretical perspectives, and principles of human diversity and potential.
