The Option in English Education is designed for prospective secondary English teachers and satisfies the state-mandated requirement in subject matter competence for the Single Subject Teaching Credential. This 55-unit option combines a 43-unit core with a specified emphasis in one of five areas. All five areas of emphasis require that students complete the 43-unit core requirements specified here and take the additional 12 units of breadth and perspective as indicated below. In order to achieve subject matter competency, English Education majorsmust earn grades of ‘C’ or better in all of their content area coursework. English Education emphases should not be confused with BA options or majors in English or other departments, which have significantly different requirements.

Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary program that offers three concentrations: Asia Area Studies; Asia and Business; Asia and Globalization. All of these concentrations share a common core. Beyond the common core requirements, students select elective courses from one of the three concentrations to complete their 39 unit requirement for the major. Regular consultation with an advisor is highly recommended. Because of the importance of statistics to this discipline, students are advised to include STAT 108 among their GE courses. A “C” grade in all required and elective classes in the major is required for continuation of the program. It is also suggested that students take AST 320 or AST 336 for their required Upper Division WI Capstone course. The Department of Journalism & Public Relations offers undergraduate programs that prepare students for careers in journalism, public relations and other media, editorial and storytelling related industries. Students take courses that provide both a strong theoretical foundation and real-life, hands-on training in the skills they need to pursue careers in mass communications. Journalism graduates become reporters, editors, bloggers, broadcasters, designers and managers at media organizations and are trained in multimedia storytelling and communicating across multiple platforms, including newspapers, magazines, online media, social media, radio, and television.

When resources are scarce, difficult choices must be made on how resources are to be divided among competing uses. Economics is a social science that addresses the efficient allocation of scarce resources.

The Master of Science in Sustainability Management and Policy (MSSMP) is designed to provide students with the advanced and highly sought-after expertise needed in the field of sustainability management. The program provides training designed to prepare students to apply the concepts of sustainability within an organization and the regulatory environment by engaging them in advanced and in- demand training. This program will provide a transdisciplinary graduate degree that will empower students with technical, managerial, and problem-solving skills to guide the decision-making process in the context of sustainability. The curriculum design objective is to offer a balance between theory and application by illustrating the holistic dynamics of social, economic, environmental, business, and technical systems.

This degree is available to qualified students preparing for professional careers in research, education, industry, consulting, government, and health professions. Our Biology M.S. degrees are appropriate choices for students seeking to increase their competitiveness for further studies at the doctoral level and professional schools. In addition, a master’s degree in biology, combined with appropriate courses in education, can be utilized for a teaching career.This degree requires a thesis based on original scientific research; a list of research areas with the names of faculty specializing in these areas can be obtained from the department’s website.

The Fitness option is designed for students interested in careers in the fitness industry, e.g. fitness director, manager, program specialist, coordinator, strength and conditioning coach, personal trainer, or group instructor in corporate, commercial, YMCA, or other public or private facilities.

The primary goal of the undergraduate program is to provide our students with a broad education in normal and disordered processes of speech, language, hearing and swallowing. This goal has the following objectives:

• Provide our students with an understanding of normal development in speech, hearing, language, swallowing and communication
• Provide our students with an understanding of the genetic, cultural, neurological, physiological, psychological, and socioeconomic factors which can disrupt normal development in speech, hearing, language, swallowing, and communication
• Prepare students for professional graduate training as speech-language pathologists.

The Bachelor of Arts in Design (BA) is comprised of 120 semester units and is structured for students who seek a broad understanding and application of design with an opportunity to focus in a specific area of study. The purpose of this degree is to provide a forward-thinking liberal arts degree where students will take a variety of core courses in design theory, art and design history, and either object or space oriented design. In addition to receiving a foundation of core design courses focused on either object or spaced oriented design, the curriculum enables students to focus in a specific area of study including display and exhibition, environmental communication design, furniture design, computer modeling, lighting design, and design history. The degree is also advantageous to design students who would like a degree in an alternative design area, or who wish to pursue study in a graduate program.

American Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines American life and culture.The work of American Studies takes place both on campuses and in communities. American Studies scholars investigate where the ideals of American democracy are at their finest and where they remain incomplete.  

American Studies at CSULB was first established in the 1970s. Recently, a group of faculty committed to current ideas and scholarship in American Studies revitalized the program on campus. American Studies offers students of today a new approach to learning. Because of its flexibility, students will actively assist in the growth and design of the American Studies program at CSULB by establishing links among departments and areas of study and by designing their own plan of inquiry. Students will explore various aspects of society and culture at different moments in American history and situate the interactions between peoples in a culturally diverse society within national and global contexts.
