The Africana Studies major is designed to provide students with a rich intellectual experience through the critical and systematic study of the life, thought and practice of African peoples, Continental and Diasporan, in their current and historical dimensions. Africana Studies seeks to critically examine and understand the Africana initiative and experience from an Afrocentric or African-centered perspective, i.e., from a position internal to the culture of the people studied, while retaining a respect for and openness to the multicultural character and instructive value of the total human experience.

The Master of Arts (MA) in Asian Studies provides a comparative understanding of the cultural, economic, and socio-political significance of Asia in the 21st century. It requires competency in one or more Asian languages. To achieve this, MA students are encouraged to study abroad for part of their course work. Graduates from the MA program in Asian Studies can expect to be much more competitive for positions in the Foreign Service, State Department, K-12 and community college education and administration, international finance and industry, non-governmental organizations, academic publishing, professional translation work, and Ph.D. programs in Chinese, Japanese, or Asian Studies.

The Master of Arts in Human Experience Design Interactions (MA_HXDI) is comprised of 33 semester units. The program prepares students and/or returning professionals from diverse undergraduate backgrounds for advanced multidisciplinary design work in careers of their choice. Through the MA_HXDI program, students will develop expertise in the tools and methods of experience design as a strategy for making and adding value to systems, products, spaces, and services. Through a diverse faculty and collaborations with leading organizations, students will use cutting-edge technology tools while developing novel solutions to complex challenges. These tools provide both the quantitative data to support the qualitative research of human-centered design, as well as the digital interactions of contemporary human communication and experience. This ‘theory plus practice’ approach prepares students to smoothly transition into the broad spectrum of professional design roles, from design research to interaction design. Through research labs in the department of design, students have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research, independently and through collaborations with business, government, education, entertainment, health care, and technology organizations. These collaborations provide students with highly sought after knowledge and skills for advanced design work.

The Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) option provides the subject matter preparation required to earn a credential for teaching physical education in California public schools.

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree program in Kinesiology includes two concentrations of K-12 Physical Education Teacher Education and Adapted Physical Education (APE) teacher education. Each of these options is accredited by the California Commission for Teacher Credentialing (CCTC).

The degree requires courses in both 2D and 3D programs. This is an opportunity for students to explore many of our art disciplines.

Studio Art allows for a wider breadth of artistic opportunity. Rather than focusing on a single medium, all School of Art program areas offer room for experimentation. Ultimately, a focus is comprised of a selection of courses that exemplify each individual student's artistic goals.

This degree is designed to prepare graduates for a variety of careers in the biomedical engineering field. The program builds upon a strong base of biology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering science to develop a clinically oriented biomedical engineer to serve medical and industrial needs. It includes courses and laboratories in biomedical engineering, physiology and biology. Elective units are available in the senior year to explore individual areas of interest.

The Master of Science in Emergency Services Administration degree program at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) is fully online, and prepares graduates for organizational leadership and senior-level positions across the emergency services sector. The program's high-quality, wide-ranging courses engage students in theory and research that inform the management of disaster risk. Program coursework culminates in projects or theses that directly strengthen students’ organizations and communities.

The EMER program at CSULB was named in the Top 5 of the Guide to Online Schools in their 2020 Best Value Colleges (based on tuition rates and salary data) and 2020 Most Affordable rankings.

In recent years, emergency services professions have become extremely competitive, with demands for personnel to further their education to attain promotion and keep up with technical advances. Those in the following fields are well-suited for this program: firefighters, police officers, military personnel, emergency medical services personnel, and disaster response planners within government, business, and industry.

Public administrators today are becoming increasingly aware of the fact that government is, indeed, the people’s business. They are challenged to be both effective and efficient. They believe that people tend to support what they help to create. Working with citizens, they have brought the practice of public management to its highest level without giving up the desire to constantly change and improve. The difference is that today’s public servants are recognized and rewarded in personal and material ways, making the study of public policy and administration a highly desirable career option.

The Graduate Center for Public Policy and Administration offers the Master of Public Administration degree; Options in the degree program include Public Works Administration and Urban Affairs; and graduate certificate programs exist in Employer-Employee Relations and Personnel Management, Public Management Analysis, and Public Sector Financial Management.

The Sport Psychology and Leadership option provides rigorous training and exposure to the mental aspects of movement and sport and requires 120 units of study. This option has two concentrations – one in Sport Psychology and one in Leadership. The course work for both concentrations is the same except for the activity courses and the elective courses. The option is designed for students interested in careers in: 1) sport psychology; and 2) coaching outside the public school system (K-12), e.g., sport management/leadership; coaching professional athletes, coaching youth-sport athletes, and coaching in sport academies. Many students also consider pursuing graduate education.

Graduate study in Recreation Administration prepares students for advanced careers in the field of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism. Through a combination of online and traditional classroom instruction, students explore the theoretical foundations of the field while developing the administrative and management skills needed to become managers of private, commercial, and public recreation agencies. Students may also focus on research design and methodology in preparation for a research-based position and/or doctoral studies.
