Master of Music in Music - Composition with Interactive Technology Concentration

This degree is designed to prepare students for careers in coaching and in student-athlete development. Required coursework includes Psychology of Coaching, Sport in U.S. Culture, Seminar in Motor Learning, Applied Biomechanics: Lifting and Work Capacity, Advanced Strength and Conditioning, Psychology of Injury and Research Methods and Statistical Analysis, and an additional 12 units that include electives and a culminating experience (i.e., thesis or capstone project). The curriculum is designed to provide students with a well-rounded coaching education, while challenging them to learn research-based practices and application. Students should graduate with an established coaching philosophy, networking skills, and improved methods of motivation and athlete skill development.

The Sport Psychology and Leadership option provides rigorous training and exposure to the mental aspects of movement and sport and requires 120 units of study. This option has two concentrations – one in Sport Psychology and one in Leadership. The course work for both concentrations is the same except for the activity courses and the elective courses. The option is designed for students interested in careers in: 1) sport psychology; and 2) coaching outside the public school system (K-12), e.g., sport management/leadership; coaching professional athletes, coaching youth-sport athletes, and coaching in sport academies. Many students also consider pursuing graduate education.

The Master of Music degree program provides professional concentrations in Composition, Conducting-Instrumental, Conducting-Choral, Jazz Studies, Opera Performance and Instrumental/Vocal Performance.

The BA in Dance, Option in Dance Science, offers a course of study combining dance with specific kinesiology and science courses for students interested in teaching careers in dance, dance medicine, careers in dance fitness, or graduate education in the areas of dance science or related dance studies. Students interested in the BA in Dance, Option in Dance Science should meet with Program Coordinator Brooke Winder no later than the start of their 2nd year (earlier for transfer students). Additionally, students must pass BIOL 207 , BIOL 208 , and DANC 260 with a minimum GPA of 2.25 to satisfy the major specific declaration requirements. The program offers courses leading to the B.A. degree in Spanish, the B.A. degree in Spanish Interdisciplinary Studies Option, the Minor in Spanish, the Certificate in Professional and Conversational Competence for Spanish Heritage Speakers, the Concentration in Bilingual Spanish and English for the B.A. in Liberal Studies, the Single Subject Teaching Credential in Spanish, and the minor and certificate programs in Latin American Studies in addition to several other programs and degrees.

CSULB is one of only a handful of schools that offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology. This degree program, operated under the auspices of the Department of Biological Sciences, is designed both for students considering graduate work in marine biology, and also for those seeking employment in private industry or governmental agencies.

Students working towards the Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology enroll in small upper division lecture and lab classes taught by Ph.D.-level faculty. They take frequent field trips to nearby bay, estuary, rocky intertidal, and open ocean habitats. There are many opportunities for motivated undergraduates to carry out original scientific research. A Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from CSULB has helped many of our past students to successfully compete for marine biology-related jobs in resource management agencies and companies. Many of our alumni also go on to do graduate work in the marine sciences.

The Master’s Program in Exercise Science provides an expansive study of the physiology, biomechanics, and motor control of exercise and physical activity. Students can study the mechanics, responses, and adaptations to training that relate to promoting health, preventing disease, and enhancing performance. Graduates will understand how exercise and conditioning optimize human function and capacity through current research-based curriculum, practical experiences, and original research. Fully equipped laboratories include the Physiology of Exercise and Sport (PEXS) Lab, the Motor Control Lab, and the Movement Science Lab (MSL), all of which specialize in a wide range of tasks. The Masters in Exercise Science prepares graduates for competitive fields in exercise & fitness, strength & conditioning, health & wellness, and clinical settings. This program also equips students for advanced graduate work including doctoral degrees and clinical/medical training.

This degree is designed to prepare graduates for a variety of careers in the biomedical engineering field. The program builds upon a strong base of biology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering science to develop a clinically oriented biomedical engineer to serve medical and industrial needs. It includes courses and laboratories in biomedical engineering, physiology and biology. Elective units are available in the senior year to explore individual areas of interest.

This option is available in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. It was introduced in response to a certification process developed by the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). NCFR is the leading national organization for professionals concerned with promoting and enhancing the quality of family life. NCFR sponsors the only national program to certify family life educators.

The Master of Arts in Education, Option in Dual Language Development (30-33 units) focuses on bilingualism in school and societal contexts. The program, through its action research approach, seeks to develop a cadre of teacher-leaders who systematically and purposefully examine and refine their own pedagogy with respect to the instruction of language minority students.
