The Art History program provides the necessary research skills and information to enter the professional fields of teaching, museum work, art gallery management, art consultancy, arts management, and art writing. The diverse curriculum offers specialty courses on both Western and non-Western (i.e. Asian, African, Native North American, Pre-Columbian, etc.) societies. Art historical methodologies are included in courses in historiography, art theory, art criticism, art and anthropology, and museology.

The Department of Geological Sciences is a student-centered program that provides undergraduate students with substantial laboratory- and field-based instruction and opportunities to participate in research. Graduate students investigate a considerable range and variety of research topics for their theses. Our program has a proud tradition with a continuing commitment in preparing our students for professional careers or further post-graduate education.

Our program is based solidly in fundamental geological skills with an emphasis in field experiences. We are located 10 minutes from the beach, one hour from the mountains and the San Andreas Fault, and two hours from the desert!

Geologists are scientific detectives who uncover the past, investigate the present and predict the future of Earth. For example, geologists determine where it is safe to live, where to find essential resources, how to deal with pollution and environmental changes, and how to remediate the damage to Earth. Students who enjoy working and recreating outdoors and are curious about how the world around them works will find this field a rewarding area of study.

The Bachelor of Arts in Modern Jewish Studies is an interdisciplinary major that consists of courses in a variety of disciplines, including literature, history, religion, geography, Hebrew Language and politics. Students will gain an understanding of Jewish civilizations as the result of interactions of Jewish culture, history, and religion within both societies where Jews have been the dominant majority (the first two Jewish commonwealths and modern Israel) and the minority. Students will explore the constants and diversity of the Jewish experience in different eras and geographical settings. They will be able to define the parameters of the Diaspora and its significance on both Jewish and non-Jewish life. They will understand the significant Jewish beliefs, ethics, philosophies, and religious texts. Students will comprehend the place and role of Israel and Zionism in Jewish life, politics, culture, and religion. They will understand the history of the Holocaust/Shoah and its impact on both the Jewish and non-Jewish worldviews. Students will also gain a basic comprehension of and proficiency in Hebrew.

This option is for students preparing to teach mathematics at the secondary school level. Completion of this option meets subject matter competence requirements for the Single Subject Teaching Credential Mathematics. Consult the department’s Mathematics Education Advisor early to plan the program.

Students majoring in the B.S. in Mathematics (all options) who would like an enriched academic program that includes a thesis may complete the Honors in the Major program described here.

May also complete General Honors through the University Honors Program, in which case the thesis requirement may be met through the Honors in the Major.

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms and their interactions with humans, other organisms, and the environment. This degree is appropriate for those contemplating graduate work in microbiology or, with the inclusion of appropriate classes, may be utilized by pre-professional students.

The Bachelor of Science degree is designed for students interested in immediate employment in industry or wishing to continue on to a Master's or Ph.D. degree in physics or a related field.

Our students go on to other advanced degrees, become religious professionals, secondary and higher education teachers, librarians, educational entrepreneurs, managers or aid-workers in NGOs, writers or performance artists, business managers, and the like. William Bao Bean, an American venture capitalist in Asia, tells us that he only supports the ventures of Humanities majors because they have the critical and innovative mindset to be successful.

Graduates of HCA master’s degree programs will achieve competencies in the areas of (1) communications and relationship management, (2) leadership, (3) professionalism, (4) knowledge of health care environment, and (5) business skills and knowledge. These competencies are the main domains of the model based on the American College of Health Care Executives’ (ACHE) Competency Assessment Tool and Healthcare Leadership Alliance’s (HLA) Competency Directory.

The Program’s curriculum was designed, and has been revised over the years, to provide students with the health care management knowledge and skills necessary to meet the changing needs of the health care industry and to conform to academic accreditation criteria. HCA follows a generalist approach in the design of its program and admits students with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

A degree in German emphasizes competency in the use of language and a thorough understanding of important aspects of contemporary society in German speaking countries (literature, political life, film, social issues). At the heart of the European unification process and serving as the new bridge towards Central and Eastern Europe, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland play a pivotal international role in politics, in trade and in cultural exchanges.

In this program, efforts are made to accommodate needs of students who simultaneously pursue many majors including other RGRLL programs, International Studies, Biology, Business, Engineering, or a certificate in Travel and Tourism.

Completion of the German major (plus 6 additional units) meets the subject matter competence requirement for the Single Subject Teaching Credential in German. Prospective students should consult the undergraduate German Advisor and the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Program Advisor early to plan their program.
