Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior. Psychologists simultaneously seek to understand the commonality as well as the diversity of human experience.

A Bachelor’s degree in Psychology provides solid preparation for students who wish to pursue a career in any field that involves people, including education, business, health care, sports, or community development. It is ideal for individuals who seek an understanding of behavioral principles while pursuing a well- rounded education. This degree is also designed to provide a strong foundation for graduate school, including the three Master’s degree programs offered in the department.

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms and their interactions with humans, other organisms, and the environment. This degree is appropriate for those contemplating graduate work in microbiology or, with the inclusion of appropriate classes, may be utilized by pre-professional students.

The objective of the international business option is to prepare students for the increasingly competitive and interdependent international business world with which they must cope. There is great and growing need for American business school graduates to be better informed about how to compete and do business outside the U. S. as well as in the U. S. market where much of their competition is from foreign firms. Students need to understand how international business practices and customs differ from those in the U. S. They need at least some familiarity with a language other than English as well as with cultural diversity and world geography.

Educational administrators serve in many capacities. No matter what position an administrator holds within a TK-12 educational organization, all efforts should be directed at supporting equitable academic opportunity and achievement for all students. The courses in the M.A. in Educational Administration with preliminary administrative services credential program are designed to prepare leaders for this important work. Emphasis is placed on (1) examining the role of a school leader, with heavy emphasis on instructional leadership, (2) using data to solve problems of practice, (3) leading school improvement to create more equitable schools, (4) managing and guiding change, and (5) working collaboratively with diverse families and communities. The program’s primary mission is to educate students who will assume leadership positions in diverse, urban, TK-12 schools and districts.

The Option in Applied Physics provides a master’s degree program that emphasizes concepts and techniques particularly appropriate for applied physics. It is intended for students having a background in physics, engineering, or a related field.

The Environmental Science and Policy (ES&P) degrees program is jointly housed in the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, reflecting its inherent interdisciplinary nature. A Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science as well as a minor are available.

We highly encourage B.A. students to seek a minor in a closely related discipline such as anthropology, economics, geography, international studies or political science.

The Master of Arts in Education, Option in Curriculum and Instruction, Elementary Education (30-33 units) is designed to foster the development of educators who are caring, effective, reflective, and committed to improving their schools. Coursework prepares teachers to apply theoretical insights and research findings to the practical problems they encounter in their work in curriculum and instruction.

The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) program aims to provide students with advanced training in sub-disciplines of mechanical engineering that combines modern engineering practice and rigorous theoretical framework to enhance students’ pursuit of professional careers and doctoral studies. The program involves application of mechanical engineering knowledge and skills to build students’ mastery in the areas of expertise in order to:

Utilize advanced theoretical techniques in the design and/or analysis of engineering systems;

Apply modern experimental and/or computational tools to design and/or simulate engineering systems;

Promote the field of study through research and/or development of novel engineering solutions.

Typical tasks and responsibilities undertaken by students in the curriculum for this program would not fall within one of the traditional specialties in engineering, e.g. aerospace, chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, or computer science and engineering. The student may pursue an interdisciplinary program, approved by a graduate advisor, by selecting courses from the various departments of engineering. The Option in English Education is designed for prospective secondary English teachers and satisfies the state-mandated requirement in subject matter competence for the Single Subject Teaching Credential. This 55-unit option combines a 43-unit core with a specified emphasis in one of five areas. All five areas of emphasis require that students complete the 43-unit core requirements specified here and take the additional 12 units of breadth and perspective as indicated below. In order to achieve subject matter competency, English Education majorsmust earn grades of ‘C’ or better in all of their content area coursework. English Education emphases should not be confused with BA options or majors in English or other departments, which have significantly different requirements.
