Majoring in Sociology engages you in the scientific study of social behavior and social actions, that allows for a deeper understanding of the inner workings of social systems and structures. 

SPU graduates with degrees in Sociology have gone on to careers in law, social work and counseling, and social-policy fields. Sociology graduates also work in government, business, industry, and private research agencies. Others find careers in religious organizations, law enforcement agencies, and many other settings.

As a Bachelor of Arts in Life Sciences major, you have the option of focusing on a specific area of biology (such as physiology, organismal biology, or ecology), or exposing yourself to a broad range of courses.  This flexibility will allow you to complement a second major or diverse career options with a solid foundation in the biological sciences.

Chemistry forms a foundation for the study of a wide variety of scientific disciplines. It is concerned primarily with matter, energy, and their interactions. Chemists are both creators and problem-solvers who do everything from create new substances to analyze criminal evidence. They are at the forefront of efforts to make sure that technology serves people, rather than the reverse. For the modern business enterprise, utilizing information effectively is key to creating a competitive advantage. An MS in Information Systems from Seattle Pacific bridges the gap between business and technology, preparing students for leadership at the intersection of technology and business. With the STEM designated MS-IS program, leaders are developed with the management, technology, and problem-solving skills they need to handle complex, globally integrated systems.

Through the applied, experiential, and collaborative-based curriculum at Seattle Pacific’s School of Business, Government, and Economics, students gain purpose-driven leadership skills. They also discover how IT, business principles, and ethical practice untie to lay a foundation to complex, globally integrated systems and service to others as an IT security professional, data analyst, project manager, information manager, or CIO.

The Museum Studies Track supplements the History major core with coursework that helps you prepare for graduate study and employment in the vigorous and innovative field of museum studies and public history.

Graduates who complete this program will be well prepared for immediate employment, or for further graduate study, in the vigorous and growing fields of museum, archival, and public history.

The History Department launched a new curriculum in 2020 for its History Majors and Minors. The new curriculum is designed for students to grow in:

• Cross-cultural insight
• Understanding of historic inequalities and the construction of race, gender, and class over time
• The cultivation of empathy for others
• Drawing on the past to address the pressing problems of today 
• Wrestling with the sometimes dark and difficult periods of human history--wars, displacement, and injustice--and contemplating how the Christian story can speak into these challenging moments.
• Cultivating career-oriented skills and professional experiences through a new "Careers in History" class and internship placement support

The new sequence of classes for the majors and minors helps students achieve mastery of an essential skill set in an intentional way: students first take classes in "Thinking Historically," then study "Systems in History," and finally learn to "Do History" themselves.

Our redesigned majors and minor offer students flexibility in their choice of electives while ensuring that students will have broad exposure to many different time periods and world regions.

The BA in in Human Development and Family Studies offers an interdisciplinary approach to individual and family development across the lifespan, providing opportunities for you to study how people develop physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially within the context of the family and society.

It is a versatile undergraduate degree for anyone who is intrigued by human nature and the forces that help shape it. As a graduate, you will be prepared to work with people in a variety of roles, including social and family services, teaching and education, advocacy and non-profit work, and business and health related careers.

This major is designed to make you a canny navigator of our media-saturated environment. In addition to probing the historical origins of our present visual climate, you will investigate the latest trends in critical theory and develop strong research and writing skills. The Art History program at SPU has a modern and contemporary focus, and encourages hands-on engagement with mounting, curating, and reviewing gallery shows. The philosophical cornerstone of our curriculum is our belief in a common humanity; we look for wisdom in even the most distant past and cultivate sympathy with the strange and unfamiliar. An optional biennial study-abroad program to Rome, Italy, will help you both absorb and critique the foundations of Western culture.

The BS in Information Systems is designed to provide you with a strong foundation in both the technical and organizational aspects of information systems. Graduates are well-prepared to help both for-profit and nonprofit organizations define and achieve their technology goals.

As an English major or minor, you will encounter some of life’s fundamental questions about the human condition. You will think about the truth-telling possibilities of story, cultivating an understanding of the word as God’s uniquely human gift.

You will think, read, and write extensively in an English academic program marked by a strong degree of community both inside and outside the classroom. You will read texts including Beowulf, Shakespeare, and traditional great works of the Western canon as well as emerging voices worldwide.

And because the study of English also rests on the rigorous tools of critical thinking and textual interpretation, you will find an English major or minor is excellent preparation for life beyond the university as well.

The interdisciplinary Politics, Philosophy, & Economics (PPE) major is a unique program which prepares students for leadership in many areas of public service and private enterprise.

Politics, Philosophy, & Economics (PPE) Major

PPE is a rigorous, interdisciplinary program that combines studies in political science, philosophy, and economics.  Modeled after a program at Oxford University, PPE core classes study human values, cultural institutions, and economics in order to develop multiperspectival solutions to pressing social problems. PPE students will also choose an area of emphasis from the following tracks: Applied Economics, Financial Economics, International Affairs, Law, Philosophy, Public Administration, and Social Enterprise.
