This interdisciplinary program examines the cultural and social construction of gender, explores the history, experiences, and contributions of women to society, and studies the influences of gender on the lives of women and men. Looking at the world through this lens allows us to more directly and effectively address issues of social justice and social change. By studying gender relations, students learn skills that work toward dismantling gender-based inequality and promote gender equity in various arenas of social life.

The Department of Anthropology and Geography houses a diverse faculty that includes cultural anthropologists, archaeologists, biological anthropologists, and geographers whose scholarship spans the breadth of human experience.

This major focuses on the understanding the social aspect of natural resources, as well as developing the skills to assess, plan and, implement strategies that lead to successful conservation. As an HDNR major, you’ll take science courses and do field work, but you’ll also become trained in thoughtful and professional communication, public speaking, and writing. You’ll come out with career opportunities that stretch from conservation to government policy, exploration to education, and beyond.

The source of many challenges in natural resources involves human behavior, and solutions to those challenges requires innovative problem-solving, a deep understanding of complex issues, and collective action. This major is focused on understanding the social aspects of natural resources, and developing the skills to assess, plan and implement strategies that lead to successful conservation.  Curriculum for this major trains students in the areas of communication, leadership, systems thinking, collaboration, conflict management, decision-making, social science research in conservation, and conservation planning and management.

The Biochemistry major provides a student with a strong, well-balanced background in the biological, physical, and mathematical sciences. As a Biochemistry major, studies include macromolecular structure and function; cellular biochemistry; metabolism; gene expression, DNA and protein structure, DNA replication and repair; cell organization, communication, growth, aging, and death. Students are also required to take courses in physics, organic chemistry, and statistical measurements and methods used in research. Independent study and internships (typically during the junior and senior years, but could start in the freshman year) provide opportunities for experiential learning and working closely with the faculty, sometimes leading to authorship of original publications.

The Hospitality Management major combines courses in foodservice, lodging, event planning, nutrition, and business to provide students with a strong skill set for entry into hospitality management professions. Elective credits allow students to take courses in areas of interest to enhance their education. The curriculum has a strong emphasis on management skills required for success in the hospitality industry.

The Hospitality Management program maintains strong ties with the foodservice, lodging, and event planning industries locally, state-wide, and nationally to connect graduates with a wide variety of employment opportunities in the expanding commercial and non-commercial segments of hospitality management. The hospitality industry is the second largest employer in Colorado and the United States. The department oversees internships in the industry and aids in job placement upon graduation.

Prevention science focuses on strategies that reduce risk factors and promote positive development to improve the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities. The master’s degree includes coursework in lifespan development, risk and resilience, and family functioning. In addition, you will be trained in program development, implementation, and evaluation, as well as research design and grant writing, to help prepare you for various careers in the human services, or to go on to doctoral studies.

The Department of Construction Management maintains close ties to the construction/engineering/architecture industry and offers applied research opportunities. The program focuses on research and theory with a strong emphasis on project management. The curriculum design allows students to tailor a portion of the specialization requirements to meet individual interests and goals.

The Department Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology was the first in natural resources to emphasize the importance of incorporating public input and to implement two-way communications into planning and decision-making regarding wildlife policy.

Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) is an exciting field with many career opportunities. The mission of this interdepartmental major is to prepare professionals dedicated to enhancing the well-being of individuals, families, and the communities and environments in which they live and/or work.

Students graduate with an interdisciplinary perspective about the challenges encountered by families and consumers. Through coursework, students gain skills to assist families and consumers with quality of life decisions and challenges related to interpersonal/human relationships, consumer and financial resource management, personal development, nutrition and wellness, and balancing family and work.

This program emphasizes the management and problem-solving skills needed to be a responsible and productive individual, family member, and worker. Students take coursework in a variety of departments including, but not limited to:
