Criminal Justice
As a criminal justice student, you'll not only learn about crime and justice—you'll also gain critical skills in analyzing and communicating. In fact, with your degree, you can pursue careers in law enforcement – including cyber crime investigation – and social services, business, and education.

We’ll train you in the areas of corrections, criminology, forensic science, juvenile justice, law, policing, computer forensics, and other positions. Your courses will teach you the theories of crime and delinquency, as well as the logic, procedures, and ethical foundations associated with our nation's justice system. Finally, during your senior year, we'll set you up with an internship at an agency such as the FBI, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Drug Enforcement Agency, or the Jefferson County Family Court.

Public Health
The BS in Public Health degree offers a broad overview of public health research and practice, introducing you to the multiple focus areas within public health (e.g., epidemiology, health behavior, health policy). Our students also gain hands-on experience working with community partners to improve the health of populations. Accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the BS in Public Health degree is designed to prepare students to:

• Identify key health challenges facing a community, based on evaluation and synthesis of public health information.
• Recognize the importance of evidence-based strategies to address public health challenges facing a community.
• Advocate for improved health in the community, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences.

Students joining our Integrated Master Program (IMP) will benefit from a degree-seeking I-20 while still receiving the additional support provided by INTO UAB, from the day they apply through their first semester on campus. A master of science in civil engineering equips engineers to advance in various industrial or academic career fields that emphasize high-level and collaborative research. An M.S. in civil engineering can serve as a step toward a Ph.D. in engineering, or it can provide the experience and credentials needed to increase competiveness in the job market. The program can be completed in as few as two years, though the typical student takes two courses per term for five semesters.

Specializations
The department offers specialization programs in the fields of:

• Structural engineering/structural mechanics,
• Environmental engineering,
• Transportation engineering, and
• Construction engineering management.

African American Studies
The BA in African American Studies is an interdisciplinary program examining African life and culture, both on the African continent and the diaspora. As a student, you will learn about the African and African American experience from different perspectives including English, history, political science, sociology, and public health.

We are committed to educating and providing our students with knowledge and critical thinking skills to:

• Address social justice issues,
• Promote the diversity of ideas, and
• Understand the experiences, traditions, and history of African descended people.

International Studies
International studies will give you an in-depth knowledge of what's happening around the world, letting you focus your courses on specific areas that interest you. We'll help prepare you for a career in a variety of fields, including international relations, business, journalism, economics, politics, diplomacy, and much more.

The number one asset you'll need for success is a keen understanding of today's world economy. That's why we offer you the option to focus on a variety of areas, including Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and South America. Your curriculum will cover such topics as economics, socio-political awareness, and cultural literacy. We'll help you line up a study-abroad opportunity, participation in the Model Arab League, an internship with an international business, or another experience.

Theatre
A theatre degree can give you performing arts experience as an actor, designer, stage manager, director, scriptwriter, costume and set designer, and much more. This degree could lead to a career in Hollywood, New York, or just about anywhere.

But before you see your name in lights, we first have to hone your talents and teach you about topics such as scenery, lighting, makeup, and even theatre history. But don't worry, we'll want to get you on the stage often during your education, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to put your new skills to use. In fact, with our state-of-the-art theatres and scene design shop, you'll have opportunities to participate in or create professional-level productions.

Are you an engineer with wide-ranging interests? Are you interested in collaborating with engineers and scientists from other disciplines? If so, the UAB Department of Mechanical Engineering offers Master of Science program that may be just what you're looking for to enhance your academic or professional engineering credentials.

Mechanical engineering is a broad-based discipline, and graduate students will have opportunities to explore a number of research areas where they will work alongside nationally and internationally known faculty mentors. The ME department offers a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree, including both Thesis and non-Thesis options.

Medical sociology looks at how a person's culture, feelings, and other social factors play a role in their health-care choices. A medical sociology degree can help prepare you for a career in health care, research, government data analysis, or other industries.

To begin your education, you'll take courses in medical sociology, medical social theory, and research methods/statistics. You'll then move on to electives on special topics that interest you, such as Death and Dying, Biology and Society, and Minority Aging. We know, some of these topics can get a little heavy—but they're important. And when you pair them with a pre-professional medical program, you'll have insights to social behaviors that can be invaluable to you throughout your career.

Neuroscience
Neuroscience is the study of the body's nervous system—or in other words, how the brain shares information throughout the body. A degree in this program can help you prepare for a career in academic or government research, medicine, biotechnology, or most health-related fields.

Because this program is a partnership between the Department of Neurobiology in the School of Medicine and the Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences, you'll have a diverse course offering that includes biology, chemistry, math, physics, psychology, and neurobiology. Furthermore, this program satisfies most prerequisite course requirements for those looking to go on to medical school or to pursue another career in health care. Finally, you'll have an opportunity to earn a general science teaching certification through UABTeach and have a chance to collaborate and research with a faculty member on campus.

With an MS in Physics, you'll have the background you need in statistical mechanics, electromagnetic theory, mathematical physics, and quantum mechanics to pursue a career in research, industry, or education.

To prepare you for these fields, we've developed a program that is advanced, fast-paced, and research-focused. In fact, your curriculum will allow you to explore the same research areas as our PhD students, because we want you to be well-equipped to pursue an advanced degree when you finish. In addition to your curriculum, we'll want you to choose between one of two plans. Plan I (thesis option) requires a thesis based on original research. You can research in an interdisciplinary area such as biophysics, chemical physics, geophysics, mathematical physics, neurophysics, optics, materials science, or engineering physics. Or, if you're still mulling over the decision of whether to pursue a PhD or MD, Plan II (non-thesis option) is built just for you. The thesis option is replaced here with more advanced coursework and an exit exam.
