Civil Engineering
A master of science in civil engineering equips engineers to advance in various industrial or academic career fields that emphasize high-level and collaborative research. At UAB, we can give you the engineering, design, and planning background you need to be a leader in civil engineering.

To prepare you for your career, we've designed a program that you can tailor based on your interests and goals. We have four concentrations for you to choose from, including construction engineering management, in which you can learn about cost and revenue estimating, risk, and more. Plus you can choose a thesis option, non-thesis option with an emphasis on research and design, or a non-thesis option with an emphasis on sustainable engineering design. Finally, we're going to offer you the opportunity to earn a certificate in environmental, structural, sustainable, and transportation engineering, or engineering construction management. Do you have a burning desire to express yourself through a variety of art media? Create art that transforms the world around you through a career in art direction, graphic design, museum curation, art conservation — or just about any other profession you can imagine.

From the moment you set foot on campus, we'll immerse you in the arts. Your coursework will teach you multiple disciplines of fine arts and design, and your access to UAB's Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts and the Birmingham Museum of Art will give you an intimate exposure to exhibits, displays, and special events. Choose an art studio concentration, and we'll encourage you to experiment with various styles. Concentrate in art history, and you'll focus on visual literacy and critical thinking.

Medical Sociology
Medical sociology looks at how a person's culture, feelings, and other social factors play a role in their health-care choices. A medical sociology degree can help prepare you for a career in health care, research, government data analysis, or other industries.

To begin your education, you'll take courses in medical sociology, medical social theory, and research methods/statistics. You'll then move on to electives on special topics that interest you, such as Death and Dying, Biology and Society, and Minority Aging. We know, some of these topics can get a little heavy—but they're important. And when you pair them with a pre-professional medical program, you'll have insights to social behaviors that can be invaluable to you throughout your career.

Computer Science
You may already feel like a computer expert, but in this program, you will find that you have more to learn about big data, cyber security, mobile applications, and other trending topics related to software engineering, analytical, database and other careers.

This program is open to students with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, such as engineering. There are computer science and math prerequisites necessary for this degree. Once they're done, you'll have 30 hours of coursework to do, which can be finished in 18 months if you're in school full time. You'll take classes such as Database Systems, Network Security, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning. We'll also ask you to choose between two plan options, depending on what your goals are for your future. If you want to do research, continue your graduate studies, or pursue a professional program, you should pick Plan I (thesis option). For those interested in transitioning to the computer science field, Plan II (non-thesis option) is better. Your coursework here will include specializations in bioinformatics, computer graphics, and distributed computing.

The M.S. in Computer Science (MSCS) program is designed to provide advanced study opportunities for individuals who:

• Hold a bachelors degree in Computer Science and would like to advance their technical knowledge in the field and/or learn about research in Computer Science,
• Hold a bachelors degree in another field and want to make a career transition to the computing field, or
• Currently work in the computing field and wish to obtain a graduate degree for career advancement

As a criminal justice student, you'll not only learn about crime and justice—you'll also gain critical skills in analyzing and communicating. In fact, with your degree, you can pursue careers in law enforcement – including cyber crime investigation – and social services, business, and education.

We’ll train you in the areas of corrections, criminology, forensic science, juvenile justice, law, policing, computer forensics, and other positions. Your courses will teach you the theories of crime and delinquency, as well as the logic, procedures, and ethical foundations associated with our nation's justice system. Finally, during your senior year, we'll set you up with an internship at an agency such as the FBI, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Drug Enforcement Agency, or the Jefferson County Family Court.

Communication Studies
Communication, whether verbal or nonverbal, is one of the most important skills prized by employers today. It can be an essential tool for success in a wide range of fields, including sales, emergency management, client service, public relations, and much more.

That's why, at UAB, we made this program so intensive. We want to make you the best communicator you can be. To begin, you will take classes covering topics such as writing, interviewing, pitching, and nonverbal communication skills. Then, you will also take leadership and management classes. Finally, your specific concentration will help you tailor your knowledge and experience. Choose from communication management, sports communication, or mass communication, which includes broadcasting, journalism, and public relations.
