The Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) allows you to combine your academic interests, contribute to society in meaningful ways, and find full-time employment or compete for promotion. This major is designed for flexibility to help you achieve your goals. It emphasizes adaptability, thinking, writing, and communication skills.

The BGS helps prepare you mainly for support careers in various fields, including government, health care, real estate, general social services and the service-producing sector, law, retail, and private industry.

Students who successfully complete an INTO UAB Graduate Pathway program in civil engineering are assured progression to a UAB graduate engineering degree program upon submission of additional required application materials. Civil Engineering
A master of science in civil engineering equips engineers to advance in various industrial or academic career fields that emphasize high-level and collaborative research. An M.S. in civil engineering can serve as a step toward a Ph.D. in engineering, or it can provide the experience and credentials needed to increase competiveness in the job market.

Our infrastructure demands the attentive eye of someone like you to sustain productive communities, from our roads, buildings, and dams to air quality and wastewater treatment—and even traffic patterns. At UAB, we can give you the engineering, design, and planning background you need to be a leader in civil engineering.

To prepare you for your career, we've designed a program that you can tailor based on your interests and goals. We have four concentrations for you to choose from, including construction engineering management, in which you can learn about cost and revenue estimating, risk, and more. Plus you can choose a thesis option, non-thesis option with an emphasis on research and design, or a non-thesis option with an emphasis on sustainable engineering design. But no matter which you choose, you're going to need to both complete a comprehensive exam and defend either your research project or thesis in order to graduate. Finally, we're going to offer you the opportunity to earn a certificate in environmental, structural, sustainable, and transportation engineering, or engineering construction management. In the end, you'll have the best chance at an education designed to meet your specific career goals.

The BS in Public Health degree offers a broad overview of public health research and practice, introducing you to the multiple focus areas within public health (e.g., epidemiology, health behavior, health policy). Our students also gain hands-on experience working with community partners to improve the health of populations. Accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the BS in Public Health degree is designed to prepare students to:

• Identify key health challenges facing a community, based on evaluation and synthesis of public health information.
• Recognize the importance of evidence-based strategies to address public health challenges facing a community.
• Advocate for improved health in the community, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences.

Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering (BME) is the application of engineering principles and problem-solving techniques to biology and medicine. BME knowledge and skills play important roles in modern healthcare — from diagnosis and analysis to treatment and recovery, and from the proliferation of implantable medical devices (such as pacemakers and artificial hips) to more futuristic technologies (such as stem cell engineering and 3D printing of biological organs).

Biomedical engineers differ from other engineering disciplines that have an influence on human health. How? Biomedical engineers use and apply an intimate knowledge of modern biological principles in their engineering design process. Subdisciplines in BME include design and development of active and passive medical devices, orthopedic implants, medical imaging, biomedical signal processing, tissue and stem cell engineering, and clinical engineering, just to name a few.

Information Systems
Information Systems are the backbone of modern organizations. With today’s speed of innovation, organizations need help keeping up with emerging technologies and understanding how different applications can be leveraged to accomplish enterprise objectives. The amount of information generated each day can be overwhelming. Organizations need the best technological solutions to make sense of the data, and individuals who know how to develop them are in high demand, unlike some other computer related fields. Information Systems requires a blend of technical expertise and business savvy. The program provides a solid foundation in business information systems and business knowledge with a well-rounded business curriculum as well as specialized courses in information systems that deliver a broad understanding of how to leverage technology to achieve business goals.

This program is ideally suited for those who enjoy working with technology and with people. Graduates will be uniquely qualified to serve as liaisons between technical teams and management, and to facilitate collaborative approaches to solve business problems.

Accounting
In order to succeed, every business has to have an accountant like you keeping track of its resources. Our faculty can give you the financial training you need for a career at a public accounting firm, company, governmental agency, not-for-profit organization, or elsewhere.

In fact, we're among an elite group of universities worldwide to achieve the seal of excellence in both business and accounting from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. In addition to your core classes, you can choose concentration classes in forensic accounting or information technology. We also offer an accelerated master’s program, where you can complete graduate level courses while you’re still an undergrad and put yourself on track to earn your CPA. Finally, with our internship opportunities, you'll have the chance to get real-world experience before you graduate.

As a criminal justice student, you'll not only learn about crime and justice—you'll also gain critical skills in analyzing and communicating. In fact, with your degree, you can pursue careers in law enforcement – including cyber crime investigation – and social services, business, and education.

We’ll train you in the areas of corrections, criminology, forensic science, juvenile justice, law, policing, computer forensics, and other positions. Your courses will teach you the theories of crime and delinquency, as well as the logic, procedures, and ethical foundations associated with our nation's justice system. Finally, during your senior year, we'll set you up with an internship at an agency such as the FBI, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Drug Enforcement Agency, or the Jefferson County Family Court.

The Master of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Maternal and Child Health Policy and Leadership is designed to educate individuals who will plan, administer, and evaluate programs in maternal and child health. The program provides information about the special problems faced by women and children — including children and youth with special health care needs — and their families. It develops and integrates skills from maternal and child health policy and leadership and demonstrate their application in problem solving and systems development.

Political Science
In political science, we teach you how American government and politics compare with the rest of the world. This major is an excellent option if your career interests are either political campaigns, nonprofit advocacy, political research, foreign diplomacy, law, journalism, or education.

To get you started, we'll give you an overview of American government, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and data and policy. Then, your advisor will help you choose between a line of study that's focused on the United States and one that's more internationally centered. At that point, you'll be able to tailor your curriculum with your goals in mind, search for appropriate internships, and even potentially get one-on-one faculty mentoring through the honors program.

Students joining our Integrated Master Program (IMP) will benefit from a degree-seeking I-20 while still receiving the additional support provided by INTO UAB, from the day they apply through their first semester on campus. The Master of Public Health (MPH) is the most wellknown Public Health degree. It is considered a “terminal” or “professional” degree, as it fully prepares individuals for lifelong careers in public health practice without the need for additional education. 

Population Health - Concentration
The Master of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Population Health is an individualized concentration designed for professionals working in healthcare-related fields or for students enrolled in one of our coordinated degree programs (e.g., nursing, medicine, physician assistant studies, optometry, etc.). This concentration provides insight into the critical role that public health plays in targeting solutions at the population (rather than patient) level. Students in this concentration will be trained to consider the health of populations in all policies, across all professions, using a systems approach.
