The Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with an emphasis in Global Journalism equips students for careers in national and international news reporting. In addition to learning the building blocks of good journalism (law, ethics, information gathering, effective and accurate communication), they also explore the complex and sensitive nuances of reporting on and about diverse cultures and foreign countries. A second major or a minor in a specialized field, such as political science, religion or Middle Eastern studies, is required. Coursework in digital media, such as drone videography and app development, helps further prepare students for the evolving field of journalism.

Learning Outcomes

Food systems is the study of the food supply chain, which includes production, processing, distribution, and consumption as well as waste. Drivers of the food system include culture, economics, policy, and marketing, and the collective impact on outcomes including human and environmental health, food insecurity, and community food security. The Nutrition and Food Systems degree is an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the complexities of the food system from production to consumption and impact on human health, as well as challenges faced by the food system to develop sustainable solutions for producing, processing, delivering, and consuming safe, culturally desirable, nutritious, and economically and environmentally sustainable food. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is committed to training emerging leaders who will address grand challenges facing humanity, including management and preservation of precious and finite natural resources, and finding solutions to feed over 9 billion people by 2050.

The Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Plant Systems has four tracks; students in the Controlled Environment Agriculture track cultivate technologies to efficiently produce plants and plant-based products. Students learn how to use environmentally, socially and economically sustainable growing systems in arid lands and urban settings. Students in the Bachelor of Arts in American Indian Studies program explore history, cultural traditions (oral histories, literature, arts) and tribal governments. Students also learn the languages and examine the critical social and political issues in these communities. Students pursuing an emphasis in Sustainable Buildings within the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Built Environments program explore the science and practice the techniques behind building energy efficiency. Hands-on coursework includes such topics as climate-responsive design, net-zero energy design, energy conservation, passive solar design and natural ventilation systems.
