From initial planning to supervision of construction, civil engineers are in high demand wherever engineering expertise is needed to build all types of structures. The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering prepares students to create infrastructure that stands the test of time while using methods and materials that preserve the world's vital resources and protect the environment. This versatile program covers a broad range of subjects, including construction engineering management; environmental engineering; geotechnical engineering and geomechanics; hydraulic and water resources engineering; structural engineering; and transportation, traffic, highway and airport engineering. Paid internships, fieldwork, capstone projects and design-build competitions position graduates to fill much-needed roles in public and private sectors.

The Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies investigates the historical and contemporary experiences of Africana peoples and how they are shaped by gender, class, race and global conditions. Students choose from one of three emphases: African American History, Culture & Aesthetics; Comparative Global African Diaspora; or Performance, Media, & Digital Africana Studies. This interdisciplinary major gives students essential professional skills applicable to many careers, including the ability to understand people from any background; writing; critical thinking; public speaking; creativity; leadership; and initiative. Classes focus on literature, history, culture, film, technology, arts, politics and more. The program is a leader in digital learning and boasts the nation's first Hip-Hop minor. Students are supported by faculty and a network of community leaders, with opportunities for internships, study abroad and more.

The Sustainable Communities Emphasis of the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Built Environments program guides students to discover how local and regional planning creates more sustainable communities. Students explore climate action planning, transportation planning and urban development and build critical thinking skills and a solutions-based approach to navigate the urban challenges of the present and future. Students also learn how planning impacts and is influenced by the environment, and how to make cities more sustainable and resilient. This program prepares students to begin careers in sustainable communities and also serves as a strong launchpad for graduate studies.

Chemistry is the study of the properties and reactions of the natural and synthetic substances that constitute the world around us. The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry brings together the disciplines of physics, materials science, medicine and biology to give students a strong theoretical background while teaching them how to apply that knowledge to a range of biological and physical systems. Coursework is enhanced by state-of-the-art research facilities with multi-user capabilities in computational chemistry, surface analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance and photoelectron spectroscopy, and more. Become a leader in historic preservation and learn about the importance of heritage conservation to preserve and create more sustainable built environments.Students in the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Built Environments program with a Heritage Conservation Emphasis explore the value of historic structures and landscapes and the reasons for preserving and adapting them. The faculty bring a breadth of experience and depth of expertise to coursework, teaching students how the preservation and adaptation of historic structures advances environmental, cultural and economic sustainability. Students learn the processes and protocols of conservation as well as current issues in historic preservation and resource management. Graduates are prepared for careers as managers at nonprofit organizations, leaders of government agencies, and consultants in heritage conservation and historic preservation.

Study in the nation's first academic systems engineering department, where you'll learn about the design, modeling and analysis of technological systems used for everything from health care to homeland security. Systems engineers are experts in the interaction of machines, people, materials, energy, software and hardware. Students earning the Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering do projects and conduct research in supply chain management, smart manufacturing and transportation, and autonomous surveillance, for example. Mexican American Studies examines the Mexican American experience as informed by social and health sciences, history, law and humanities. Students in this Bachelor of Arts major gain insight into how government and public policy, minority health disparities, urban planning, law, immigration, language and more affect the Mexican American population. Current U.S. demographic trends show that Mexican Americans live and work in the Southwest, the Midwest and the South, and many of these communities need people who are knowledgeable about the challenges and trajectories of Mexican Americans.
