Deepen your understanding of native communities in North America. In addition to studying languages, traditions and cultures, you'll learn about current issues facing these communities today. The study of American Indians and Alaska Natives establishes an understanding of the relationship between these communities and the U.S., and it sets the groundwork for a career in public policy, government and private business. Students in the Bachelor of Arts in American Indian Studies program explore history, cultural traditions (oral histories, literature, arts) and tribal governments. Students also learn the languages and examine the critical social and political issues in these communities. The study of small microorganisms can make a difference on a big scale, including leading to lifesaving innovations. Embrace the unknown. Microbiology is the study of microorganisms and the role they play in human, animal and plant health. This Bachelor of Science offers students a base in modern biology, specifically how microorganisms interact with their surroundings. Coursework includes food safety and consumer health; plant pathology and microbiology; environmental microbiology; microbial genomics and biotechnology; and medical microbiology. Students research microbes such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa and touch on subjects such as bacteriology, parasitology, mycology, immunology and microbial genetics. This program cultivates students' expertise in preparation for highly specialized professions from biotechnology to medical science.

• Microbial classification; Upon graduation Microbiology majors will be able to identify the defining structures and functional characteristic of various microorganism classes: viruses, prokaryotes, eukaryotes and sub-groups of microorganisms within these classes.
• Phylogenetics; Upon graduation microbiology majors will be able to understand the basis of molecular phylogenetic classifications, and demonstrate the ability to apply fundamental principles of evolution underpin microbial phylogenetics in the identification of unknown organisms.
• Microbial physiology; Upon graduation microbiology majors will be able to identify the basic features of cellular physiology, including cellular metabolism, energetics & biosynthetic reactions.

Political science is the study of government, public policy and the political behavior of individuals and groups. For the Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with an emphasis in American Politics, students grasp the foundations of political theory, and explore institutions, international relations, foreign affairs, and ideas and methods. They also delve into the unique systems, history and dynamics at play in the United States. Students develop strong analytical, argumentation and communication skills, and have access to internships at nonprofit organizations and government agencies, such as the Arizona Legislature and the Arizona Superior Court, and with local politicians and campaigns.

Flute studies at the Fred Fox School of Music include weekly private lessons, a weekly studio master class, small group technique classes, flute pedagogy and more. Along with applied study, students earning the Bachelor of Music in Performance with a Flute emphasis perform solo, chamber, concerto, orchestral and wind ensemble repertoire for live performances, competitions and recordings. They focus on performance objectives; develop important kinesiological habits; condense music theory, history and physiology in a simplified, interpretative way; and train the body's physical performance mechanisms. Students are encouraged to seek national and international recognition through competitions, festival performances and scholarly publications.

From syntax and phonetics to semantics and sociolinguistics, learn all there is to know about how humans communicate with one another. Linguistics is the study of language and communication. It deals with the exploration of particular languages and the search for general properties common to all languages or large groups of languages.
