Philosophy
This degree prepares our majors to go on to graduate school, medical school, law school, or choose to enter the workforce in a wide variety of public, private, governmental, and non-profit agencies. Faculty in the department collaborate with an extensive group of disciplines, providing students across campus with a site for interdisciplinary learning and teaching. Given the intensity and rigor of study, including analytical reading and critical writing, our majors make themselves extremely attractive to potential employers

Mechanical Engineering-M.S.
The Department offers graduate majors leading to the M.S.M.E. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering.  Research opportunities are available in the following areas:  Mechanism Design, Kinematics, System Dynamics and Vibrations, Mechanical Controls, Tribology, Mechanical Design, Robotics, Rehabilitation Engineering, Composite Materials, Solid Mechanics, Fluid Dynamics, Thermal Energy Systems, Microelectronic Device Thermal Management, Clean and Renewable Energy Systems, Micro and Nano scale materials and systems, MEMS, Biosensors, Biofluids, Biomedical Engineering, and Engineering Education Cellular Mechanotransduction and Biomaterials, Autonomy, Control, Information, and Systems.

Linguistics is primarily an upper-level and graduate discipline with strong interdisciplinary concerns. The Department of World Languages currently offers a Master of Arts in Linguistics: English as a Second Language. At USF, our Linguistics and TESL majors are among the oldest in the Sunshine State. Linguistics dates back to the early 1960s, early in USF history, and the applied linguistics major has prepared ESL/ESOL/EFL educators since the 1970s. Our students are prepared for positions teaching second languages to non-native speakers, and our alumni have taught in public and private institutes, here in the Tampa Bay area and around the world. Other graduates have continued their graduate education and earned doctoral degrees, and many of our alumni hold positions of leadership. In short, our graduates have made a name for the linguistics major at USF.

Civil Engineering
Civil engineers will be entrusted by society to create a sustainable world and enhance the global quality of life. Civil engineers will serve as master planners, designers, constructors, and operators of society’s economic and social engine, the built environment (i.e., infrastructure); innovators and integrators of ideas and technology across the public, private, and academic sectors; managers of risk and uncertainty caused by natural events, accidents, and other threats; stewards of the natural environment and its resources; and, leaders in discussions and decisions shaping public environmental and infrastructure policy.

The College of Marine Science (CMS) offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Marine Science. This research-based major has a low student-to-faculty ratio, with an average of 100 graduate students under the direction of ~ 30 fill-time faculty. Students in the Marine Science major may elect a concentration in biological, chemical, geological, or physical oceanography, or Marine Resource Assessment through course work and thesis research. CMS graduates are well prepared for positions in academia, industry, government agencies, and non?governmental organizations at local to international levels.

Mass Communications with a concentration in Broadcast News
The Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications is a pre-professional, hands-on program that prepares students for careers in communication, especially broadcast journalism, digital media, and promotional communication. The program has two concentrations: Broadcast-News and Broadcast-Program and Production.

Graduates should understand the structure and functions of media systems as well as the basic processes of mass communication. Students learn 21st century writing and video skills that prepare them for a variety of media jobs. The Tampa media market, which consistently ranks in the top 15 in the country, provides students with opportunities to learn from industry professionals who visit classes and host students in their workplaces. While pursuing their studies, students are strongly encouraged to expand their learning beyond the classroom by completing internships and working in the field.

Business Administration-M.B.A.
The nationally ranked MBA program helps students develop analytical skills and creative abilities, and promotes collaboration with experienced and diverse classmates. In USF's MBA you will learn from world-class faculty, guest speakers and leaders of industry. The MBA can be completed on the Tampa and Sarasota-Manatee campuses.

The Electrical Engineering major offers study in all areas fundamental to the analysis, design, and development of electrical devices and systems. ?The areas covered by the major include foundational topics such as circuits and electrical power, to applications such as Internet of Things, Smart Grid, Security,  and Data Analytics. The major offers curriculum tracks that include: Bioelectrical Systems, Communication Systems, Energy, Power and Sustainability, Mechatronics, Robotics and Embedded Systems, Micro and Nano-scale Systems and Wireless Systems. Well-equipped laboratories reinforce fundamental concepts, while providing real world hands-on exposure.

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering take coursework in thermodynamics, heat transfer, instrumentation, measurements, computer-aided design, solid and fluid mechanics, dynamics, machine analysis and design, mechanical design, manufacturing processes, vibrations and controls. This is supplemented by elective coursework in such areas as sustainability, internal combustion engines, refrigeration and air conditioning, mechanical design, robotics, propulsion, manufacturing, bio-engineering, alternative energy, thermal design, composite materials, and tribology. Laboratories are available for basic instrumentation, thermal and fluid sciences, solid mechanics, data acquisition, controls, CAD/CAE, and vibrations. Graduates of this major are employed in design, manufacturing, contracting, operations, marketing, and management in virtually all segments of industry and government, including, but not limited to: aeronautics, aerospace and propulsion; automotive, internal combustion engines, fuel cells and transportation; propulsion systems; power generation; heating, ventilation and air conditioning; structures and machinery design; mining and oil exploration; paper, textile, food, and petrochemical industries/processing/manufacturing; micro and nano materials and semiconductors; and biomaterials and bioengineering. There are abundant career opportunities in a wide range of industries because mechanical equipment is required in every aspect of modern industry.
