Watch an audience erupt in laughter as you deliver your line perfectly. Write a scene that draws tears from a full house. Create a set that places the viewer in another world. With Hanover’s Theatre program, you have the opportunity to be a multifaceted producer/playwright/actor and director.

Four main-stage productions, numerous student written and directed pieces, and hands-on experience will help you discover your talent in the world of the stage. Non-majors receive class credit and are encouraged to participate in productions as well.

Hanover’s Theatre department, together with its play-production arm, the Hanover College Theatre, will involve and educate you in all aspects of theatre in the context of a liberal arts education. You can:

• Take courses in everything from acting, directing, design and playwriting, to stage combat, global theatre and theatre management. You can even study-abroad in London and Stratford-on-Avon.
• Major or minor in theatre, or simply participate in it as extra-curricular activity.
• Be involved in four to five main stage productions during the season, as well as many additional student-originated shows, including an all-student-run comedy improv troupe.
• Not just act, but direct, design, and write for the main stage as well.
• Take advantage of internships and assisted summer-work activities in theatre.

Computing is a discipline that requires and develops capabilities in solving deep, multidimensional problems requiring imagination and sensitivity to a variety of concerns. A major in computer science will provide you with a foundation of knowledge, problem solving skills and habits of logical thinking that will serve as a competitive advantage to you in whatever career you pursue.

If you want to make a positive difference in the world, study computing. Computing drives innovation in the sciences (such as the human genome project, AIDS vaccine research, environmental monitoring and protection, just to mention a few), and also in engineering, business, entertainment and education.

In medicine, it’s errors in biochemistry that cause most diseases. That’s why so many students interested in medicine are attracted to the biochemistry major at Hanover.

By focusing on the molecular aspects of biology, especially DNA, you can better understand the chemical processes and reactions that occur in humans and other living creatures. You may also develop a better understanding of food production, how to grow better crops and how to develop biofuels for energy.

With small class sizes, you’ll work closely with experienced faculty and have an uncommon level of access to the college’s well-supplied lab.

At Hanover, you’ll find many paths into the worlds of the Greeks and Romans. You can study Latin and Greek texts, as well as archaeology and the history of the ancient Mediterranean. And you can take further courses in mythology, classical art, early Christianity, anthropology or gender studies.

In other words, Classical Studies is interdisciplinary – it covers many ways of thinking about and approaching Greek and Roman culture. So we offer two different majors, designed for a variety of student interests. And within each major there is freedom to choose from among a variety of courses:

Located on a beautiful limestone bluff overlooking the Ohio River, Hanover is the perfect place to study environmental science and the natural world. State-of-the-art labs and equipment are at your disposal.

Outside the classroom, opportunities abound. Explore our 500-acre nature preserve of forested ravines with hiking trails. Check out our Environmental Education Center, community garden, campus arboretum and Natural History Museum. You’ll find active environmental science programs and many opportunities for involvement at Hanover. Environmental stewardship is a core value here, and you can make a difference while you’re still in school with local service projects and green initiatives.

In addition to receiving a high-quality business curriculum, business students are immersed in both actual and simulated corporate environments, given the opportunity to analyze and consult on complex real-world problems and are connected to business leaders and entrepreneurs across numerous industries.

The Business Scholars Pathway is an application-focused educational journey that pairs traditional business education with practical, real-world experience resulting in highly sought career-ready graduates. Our business faculty and career center staff closely follow hiring trends and employer needs, and dynamically tailor the program to respond to emerging needs. 

In partnership with the Levett Career Center, the Business Scholars Program includes other enhancements to the traditional business major and minor, including:

• Workshops and events that supplement and let you apply your classroom learning
• Opportunities to meet and network with successful alumni and other business leaders
• An intensive resume-development program that ensures your qualifications are well presented
• Personalized program and career counseling, tailored to your interests

One species with 6,000 languages and countless cultural manifestations. Anthropology students study what it means to be human and use that knowledge to navigate relationships. With an emphasis in cultural anthropology, Hanover will help you develop an understanding of your own culture and the diverse cultures of those very different from you.

Our accomplished faculty will closely mentor you, and you may have the opportunity to assist with research or even co-author journal articles. As you learn about the complexities of human communication, you can use it to help people understand each other – whether in political situations, business dealings or family institutions.

At Hanover, studying economics will lead you to an understanding of the financial issues that drive local and world events – wealth, poverty, business, politics, stock markets, recession, employment, taxes and more. By developing a broad perspective, you’ll prepare for much more than making a living, you’ll prepare to make a difference.

Through meaningful service and opportunities to travel on extended field trips with our faculty in the U.S. and abroad, you’ll learn about economic challenges facing today’s world, and explore how you can help overcome them. The study of economics prepares you to excel in the continually changing and increasingly interconnected global economy.

At Hanover, the study of a modern language is rooted in activities and readings that help students see the world with the perspective of another culture. You’ll learn to use language as a tool that connects cultures, business and individuals.

Instead of learning only good spelling and grammar, you’ll expand your cultural awareness through the study of civilization, culture and literature and become a global citizen. Since languages are best learned through immersion, all classes are taught entirely in French. You are encouraged to seize the many opportunities to interact in French in the community and abroad.
