We have undergraduate programs covering the range of modern biology including: pre-health (pre-med, pre-dentistry, pre-vet, pre-optometry, pre-physical therapy, pre-physician assistant), medical technology, cell and molecular biology, wildlife biology, fisheries and aquatic sciences, botany, ecology, and secondary education.

There are almost 400 students in the undergraduate program and about 20 in the graduate division. The Department of Biology has 13 full-time faculty with a wide range of interests. The faculty are dedicated and committed to Pittsburg State University and the department, but most importantly, to students. Most faculty are actively engaged in research activities, national professional organizations, and professional service.

Wildlife Ecology and Conservation - Emphasis
Environmental sustainability and conservation has never been more important than it is today. Students in the Wildlife Ecology and Conservation emphasis program will develop knowledge and skills to help protect Earth and all of its inhabitants.

Combining biology, chemistry, ecology, and other natural sciences, this emphasis features a focus on the conservation, protection, and management of wildlife and their natural habitats. Students will benefit from an integrated curriculum that allows them to learn about wildlife from all angles.

Change the world, one sustainable solution at a time with Pittsburg State University’s Bachelor of Integrated Studies degree program in Sustainability, Society and Resource Management (SSRM). Our unique interdisciplinary undergraduate program provides students with the opportunity to develop the knowledge and hands-on experience required for effective resource management in today’s complex world. The Department of Family & Consumer Sciences offers baccalaureate degrees and a cooperative master’s degree program. B.S. programs are offered in Nutrition and Wellness, Community and Family Services, and two tracks in Child Development. A B.S.E. program is offered in Family and Consumer Sciences Education. The department has an Early Childhood Unified: Birth - Kindergarten program. The department offers minors in Child Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, Human Ecology, Nutrition and Wellness, and Youth and Adolescent Development. The department also contributes to minors in Women’s Studies and Public Health. 

Child Development - Emphasis
The Early Childhood Development program prepares individuals to work with children ages birth through eight in a variety of programs within the community.

Coursework:

Core courses such as Lifespan Human Development, Interacting with Children, Developmental Planning: Preschool and Kindergarten, Early Childhood Program Organization and Management, and Development of the Child: Birth-8 help provide a solid foundation of knowledge for early childhood professionals.

Students are able to tailor their program to fit their needs by selecting electives that help customize their program to match professional goals. All early childhood development students will select a minor that meets their interests and career goals. Suggested minors include but are not limited to: EC Special Education, Sociology, Psychology, Recreation, Spanish, and Business Administration.

The Department of Music at Pittsburg State University is an accredited member of NASM, the National Association of Schools of Music.

Our department averages 100 music majors and 40 minors, and 200 non-music majors per semester, and is staffed by 16 full-time and 6 part-time faculty members. Music, Instrumental Performance - Emphasis
The Department of Music offers a Bachelor of Music degree, with a variety of emphases in the areas of performance. Students will select an instrumental (string, wind, brass, percussion, or keyboard) emphasis. This degree is designed to prepare individuals for professional advancement or for entry into further study at the graduate level.

Diesel and Heavy Equipment - Emphasis
This program provides students the opportunity to dive into three areas of diesel technology including: agricultural equipment, construction equipment and on highway truck systems. An emphasis area within our 4-year Automotive Technology program, the Managerial Management program, prepares students for a successful career in the automotive and diesel & heavy equipment manufacturing industry.

The Department of Psychology and Counseling offers a Master of Science Degree with a Major in Psychology. Within the program, students will select from two different emphasis areas, General or Clinical.

The General emphasis is designed for those who wish to pursue a career in community college teaching or an advanced degree at the specialist or doctoral level. Students pursuing this degree are not eligible to enroll in practicum or internship and are not qualified upon degree completion for any type of licensure, certification, or professional credentialing.

Marketing is one of the most dynamic and innovative within the Kelce College of Business. Students master foundational business and marketing theory while implementing contemporary concepts.

The Department of Physics at Pittsburg State University was founded in 1962 and has been dedicated to the outstanding teaching of undergraduate and graduate physics students ever since. Our faculty members are trained in a wide variety of physics-related fields and have industrial and research laboratory experience. Solid State - Emphasis
The Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics with an Emphasis in Solid State Physics features the core courses of a professional physics degree but includes specialized elective courses in solid state physics. This combination prepares students for advanced training in graduate school in either solid state or condensed matter physics.
