• Rhetoric, Writing and Culture: You have a passion for writing. Learn how to direct that passion toward a variety of audiences. The rhetoric, writing, and culture concentration focuses on a wide range of writing genres (e.g., producing a corporate document, a newspaper, a novel, or a film script), studied on a range of levels, including linguistics (the systematic study of the components of language), rhetoric (the art of the effective and persuasive use of language), and cultural studies (encompassing all the socially transmitted  assumptions and behaviors that affect a text).

Learn in a setting where native speakers are all around you. One of only 15 U.S. programs recognized by the French government as a Centre d’Excellence, our Department of French Studies can help you develop a command of the language, and introduce you to French-speaking cultures around the world, including Louisiana’s own.

Secondary Education: If you want to teach French, you can do that, too. The available secondary education concentration allows you to pursue certification to teach while you are enjoying the courses you love.

Study everything from the chemistry of groundwater to seismic interpretation of Earth’s subsurface. You can also enjoy a six-week field course at LSU’s field camp in the Rocky Mountains. A degree in geology from LSU will prepare you for a graduate degree program or a career in the energy or environmental industries.

Environmental Geology
Uses geological principles to solve environmental problems. This concentration provides a solid foundation in mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, and sedimentology, as well as basic courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics.

If you’re a natural-born “mathlete,” a degree in mathematics can lead to a career in many exciting areas, including actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, and secondary education. You can also pursue a graduate degree or professional degree in fields such as law and business.

Computational Mathematics
In this area of concentration, your course work will focus on the mathematics behind numerical procedures and computer algorithms. It is recommended for students interested in careers grappling with tomorrow’s large-scale numerical problems.

Journalism

Finance is the study of how individuals, businesses, and organizations acquire and use money. In fact, finance students get hands-on experience with this through the Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF), or Tiger Fund, which gives them the opportunity to work through such areas of security research, valuation of risky assets, and portfolio management. Since it began in 2005, students have taken the initial $1 million provided by the LSU Foundation and grown it to more than $2.3 million.

Find yourself among the dedicated students and faculty who work to improve the lives of others through speech, language, and hearing therapy. Study the nature and treatment of problems with speech, language, and hearing. You will learn about the linguistic, developmental, physiological, and acoustic aspects of oral communication and will be prepared for the advanced training necessary for certification in fields such as speech language pathology and audiology.

Economics is the study of how people choose to use resources. These can include the time and talent people have available; the land, buildings, equipment, and other tools on hand; and the knowledge of how to combine them to create useful products and services. Economics will provide you with analytical skills and a breadth of economic understanding that prepares you for a career in business or government or for further study in economics, law, or public policy.

Empirical Economic Analysis: Learn how to define and analyze economic problems using algebraic and statistical methods, and to identify the benefits and costs of a global economy.

Establish a solid foundation for your career by focusing on the drivers of marketing, including the trends that cause existing and new markets to develop. You will have the chance to enroll in innovative courses such as “Marketing on the Internet” and “Sports Marketing.” Additionally, the department participates in the International Business Seminars program, allowing students to travel to Europe and learn best business practices from several firms and companies.

Marketing Analytics: With classroom exposure and real-world experience through an analytics practicum or internship, the marketing analytics concentration equips students with the practical knowledge and skillsets necessary to make data-driven decisions. Students will be able to integrate their knowledge of economics, decision science, marketing research, consumer behavior, and statistics that can inform marketing strategies, tasks, and decisions.

Dietetics: Gain the knowledge necessary to take the exam to become a registered dietician. Registered dietitians provide expertise in nutrition and food service management in a variety of settings.
