The MA in Middle School Education prepares teacher candidates to address the learning and socio-emotional needs of children in middle school classrooms. This intensive, field-based program prepares candidates to work democratically with diverse children and families, including those with special needs and second language backgrounds. Sociology, like the other social sciences, focuses on human behavior and what it means to be human in constantly evolving social interactions that are part of personal identity, group behavior, and collective action. What distinguishes sociology is its emphasis on social structure as a means of analyzing and interpreting behavior, and the systematic study of the development, structures, institutions, and patterns of social interaction. A degree in sociology provides students with analytical skills, the ability to design research projects, and real insight into the human condition that can lead to successful careers in nonprofit organizations, social services, public services, education, government, sales, marketing, and administrative management. The BA in Sociology also prepares students for graduate study in sociology, as well as law, psychology, social work, and medicine.

International studies is a growing interdisciplinary field that offers students the opportunity to study politics, economics, history, sociology, anthropology and communication as parts of a complex and evolving global system. Rather than focusing just on relations between states in the international system, the international studies major affords students the opportunity to create a focus on particular geographic areas of the world, the evolution of the international system itself, or on global race, gender and activism.

The BA in Special Education (SPED) prepares teacher candidates to address the learning and socio-emotional needs of children and adolescents with learning and intellectual disabilities, severe emotional and behavior disorders, and other disabilities. This intensive, field-based program prepares every candidate to work democratically at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. It leads to the Illinois LBS1 teaching credential.

This computer science program follows an enhanced traditional curriculum, with its emphasis on data, data theory and computing systems theory. It prepares students to pursue careers in highly advanced areas such as data systems, systems programming and software engineering, or to go on to pursue graduate degrees in computer science.

The Master’s in College Counseling and Student Affairs program prepares graduate students seeking to enter the workforce as college counselors and employees in student affairs in offices in higher education. The intensive, field-based MA in college counseling and student affairs curriculum includes particular emphasis on preparing students for positions that serve university and community college students on urban campuses with diverse student populations.

MFA students complete a book-length manuscript of publishable quality and receive intensive faculty mentorship and support throughout the process. Students develop a specialty and sub-specialty in fiction and nonfiction (or vice versa) and work in any prose tradition, including the novel and long-form nonfiction. While all our students are distinguished by the quality of their writing and their dedication to craft, some of them arrive on campus knowing exactly what they plan to work on, while others take advantage of the room to explore. Political science is the study of the collective decisions that shape our common fate. Political scientists study topics including the outcome of elections, the acquisition and exercise of power, the causes of war, the design and function of electoral systems; the history of political thought; the adoption and implementation of public policies; the comparative efficacy of political systems around the world; the operation of legal systems, and many more.

The Bachelor's in Journalism and Media Studies degree is a mix of hands-on professional courses and theoretical courses that allows students a choice between two related but distinct concentrations. Students in the journalism concentration will complete coursework in online, broadcast and print journalism and are thus prepared for work in today's multimedia news environment. Students in the media studies concentration gain the objective knowledge, tools and skills to analyze, evaluate and create messages using all forms of media technologies to prepare for graduate study as well as for work in the media industries and careers involving mediated communications.
