Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

The Plant Science Track is designed to give students a diverse understanding of the plant world and their impact on human lives and environment. Plant Kingdom, Plant Anatomy, Plant Physiology and Plant Taxonomy courses will position students to find jobs in biotechnology labs, state parks and as field technicians as well as teaching in high schools or obtaining internships in other botanical institutions. Culinary Botany focuses on health and nutrition derived from plants and Medical Botany prepares students towards a career in naturopathy, allopathy and Pharmacy programs.

The study of human communication allows students to develop critical thinking skills, an understanding of cultural and gender-related differences in how people communicate, and it sharpens their marketable skills such as writing, public speaking and persuasion.

Students with a B.A. in human communication pursue jobs in a wide range of industries including management, sales, human resources, higher education (admissions and student services), marketing and training. Many students also continue their education in graduate school, law school and business or professional graduate degree programs.

Students must choose one track from the following: General Human Communication, Business and Professional Communication, Health Communication, Interpersonal Communication, or Social Innovation and Activism.

An information technology degree from UCF prepares you to drive efficiency and productivity throughout businesses — providing them with better service and value. The UCF Department of Statistics & Data Science acquaints students with in the methods of collection, analysis, interpretation, presentation and organization of data and the use of complex data in many different applications. The department offers two undergraduate degrees, one in statistics and one in actuarial science; an M.S. degree with two tracks in data mining and statistical computing; and SAS certificate program and a Ph.D. degree in big data analytics.

Students completing the Forensic Science - Biochemistry Track B.S. degree will also meet the requirements for ACS certification. This track is designed to align students with specific courses necessary for the examination of DNA and other biochemical evidence. The finance major at UCF provides you with a broad knowledge in business finance, investments, financial institutions, international finance, risk management and insurance, and real estate. Throughout your coursework, you’ll learn asset valuation, corporate planning and performance analysis — gaining the theoretical background and tools of analysis required for making effective financial decisions.

In upper-level finance classes, you’ll integrate Bloomberg terminals into your studies, which are used extensively by the financial services industry to analyze companies and various securities (e.g. equity, fixed income, options). You can also boost your skill set and enhance your resume by taking the Bloomberg Market Concepts test that leads to certification. Or, if you’re interested in Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) material, the Financial Statement Analysis course helps your understand and interpret financial statement data for business decisions and valuations.

The Ecology, Evolutionary and Conservation Biology (EECB) track is designed for students to learn about biological systems ranging from the smaller scale processes that occur within cells up to, and including, larger scale processes that result in the diversity and dynamics of ecological communities.  This track emphasizes courses in genetics, taxonomic diversity, structural biology, ecology, evolution, and physiology.  Courses such as Conservation Biology, Population Genetics, Biogeography, and Evolutionary Biology introduce students to a solid understanding of the natural world.  Other courses such as Disease Ecology & Eco-immunology, specialized lab courses and experiential learning opportunities broaden the experience that students receive.  This track allows for significant opportunities for independent research working with professors and their graduate students in both laboratory and field settings. The EECB track prepares students for graduate study at any major university or immediate employment with local, state and federal agencies, with the private sector (e.g., environmental assessment firms), and/or privately-funded environmental and conservation organizations.

Civil engineers design, construct, manage, monitor, and repair the built environment, which includes roads, buildings, bridges, foundations, tunnels, dams, and water supply and sewage systems. UCF’s civil engineering program focuses on the design and analysis of structures, geotechnical engineering, engineering mechanics, water resources, and transportation engineering. Civil engineers are directly responsible for improving the quality of life and safety of society, and are the forefront of smart city initiatives and technology innovations for civil engineering including Infrastructure, Transportation, water, etc. UCF students are active within the American Society of Civil Engineers, where they participate in steel bridge design and construction and race a concrete canoe, and many other student organizations.
