Geological engineering students at the University of Mississippi combine a knowledge of earth processes with engineering skills to solve problems. Their work intersects with the fields of civil engineering, mining and energy, natural hazards, pollution, waste disposal, groundwater, and more.

Geological engineers consider the engineering properties of natural soils and rock for building and protecting foundations, dams, levees and tunnels. They also work to reverse the environmental impacts of human activities in fields such as groundwater remediation and mine reclamation.

With a geological engineering degree, you can find a job in energy, mining, environmental consulting, government research and regulation. And, you’ll likely find yourself spending part of your workday outdoors – in swamps, mountains, forests, desert plains and out at sea.

The Bachelor of Arts in Sport and Recreation Administration degree program prepares students for leadership, direct service, and even supervisory roles in sport franchises, sport tourism, community recreation agencies, or college recreation departments.

The B.A.S.R.A. degree program is designed to develop skills preparatory to leadership and supervisory roles in a variety of sport and leisure service careers, including municipal, outdoor, therapeutic, military, church, youth, commercial/tourism, and industrial agencies and organizations.

The Bachelor of Arts in Sport and Recreation Administration program is accredited through the Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions.

The Bachelor of Music curriculum prepares students to become professional musicians or vocalists, to teach music at the K-12 levels, or for graduate or professional school. Students select a concentration in instrumental, keyboard, or vocal training.

The B.M. in music is offered for students seeking a university education that includes preparation for careers in music teaching or performance. The B.M. degree is available in the following emphases: music performance and music education.

The B.M. in music with emphasis in music education prepares students for certification in the following fields: instrumental (band or orchestra; students may choose any woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instrument as the principal instrument); vocal/choral music; keyboard. Separate course requirements are given as three concentrations: instrumental, vocal, or keyboard as principal instrument.

The Master of Music is an advanced professional degree designed to develop a particular area in music to a high level of specialization. The university offers the M.M. with the following emphases: 1) performance in woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instruments, piano, and voice; 2) music education; 3) choral conducting; 4) musicology; 5) music theory; 6) ethnomusicology; and 7) collaborative piano.

The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering (B.S.B.E.) degree program will prepare engineering students at the University of Mississippi to capably apply advanced mathematics, science, and engineering to solve the problems at the interface of engineering, biology, and medicine. Moreover, the curriculum will prepare graduates with the ability to make measurements on and interpret data from living systems, addressing the problems associated with the interaction between living and nonliving materials and systems.

The graduates of the program will be able to pursue (i) employment in biomedical or related industries (ii) graduate studies in biomedical engineering or related disciplines, and (iii) pursue professional careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, or patent law.

You can choose one of three academic tracks in our biomedical engineering program:

• Biomolecular engineering – brings together the study of molecular biology, biophysics, and chemical engineering to modify or create new molecules. This can lead you to a job working on innovative drugs and medical processes, as well as new foods and fuels.
• Biomedical systems – provides you with an understanding of medical instrumentation, devices, and biomechanics. You’ll also learn about signal analysis, using technology and other tools to better understand a person’s health.
• Bioinformatics – applies big data analytics to genome sequencing, medical imaging, and large data management. This degree can start you down the path for a career in computational medical research, software development or database management.

Political science is the study of political institutions and political behavior at the local, state, national, and international levels. Students of political science will develop critical thinking, writing, and oral communication skills essential to effective citizenship, as well as many careers.

Political science majors at the University of Mississippi conduct policy analysis and study political actors and organizations within the context of American government and politics, comparative government and politics, and international relations. The department offers optional emphases in Campaigns & Elections, International Conflict & Cooperation, Politics of Developing Countries, or Law & Courts.

African American Studies majors at the University of Mississippi select the following areas of specialization: culture, history, or political & social institutions. You can tailor your exploration of the African and African American experience by choosing from among 60 courses in different disciplines, including anthropology, art history, English, gender studies, history, music, political science, religion, and sociology.

The B.A. in art is a broad liberal arts degree for students who want a general education with a strong emphasis on art and a minor in another discipline. Students who major in art are creative thinkers who visualize the world around them to create contemporary and conceptual works of art.

The B.A. degree in physics is suggested for students wishing to teach physics in high school or to enter graduate or professional schools, such as medical school or law school. The department also offers a special B.A. curriculum for pre-medical students, which includes physics courses that are especially useful for medical students. It is recommended that students interested in teaching high school physics obtain a B.A. physics degree and a secondary education certification.
