Socrates believed that the unexamined life is not worth living. Our philosophy department helps students examine the world, especially human practices and institutions, in an effort to gain understanding and wisdom.  

Philosophy majors have a wide range of educational opportunities. The department emphasizes analytical reasoning both for general education and as a preparation for pre-law students.

As a philosophy major, you will work with outstanding faculty members who promote study opportunities both at the university and overseas. You will learn how to reason analytically and develop the ability to argue persuasively. Your courses will promote reflection on either the historical developments in philosophy or ethical values as they relate to business, engineering, morality, politics and social justice. You may also choose to pursue research opportunities in nanotechnology.

The Anthropology Department offers a general program leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree and a Research Track/Intensive Major leading to a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in Anthropology and a Medical Anthropology Minor. Anthropology is a social science concerned with the study of humans within a broad context that includes the social and physical development of our species. The diverse discipline is divided into four main areas.

• Cultural Anthropology is concerned with the comparative analysis of different cultures.
• Archaeology is the science that studies past people and societies through their artifacts.
• Linguistic Anthropology involves the study of all forms of human systems of communication and how these systems mediate humans’ experience and engagement with the world.
• Biological Anthropology includes the study of the physical nature and development of human beings, behavior and anatomy of nonhuman primates, and human variations.

Visual communicators tell stories. With a major in visual communications, you can learn to tell stories through photography, video, illustration, print publications or electronic design. Our core courses teach you the basics, and as you discover your talents, you choose the electives and out-of-classroom experiences that match your interests.

As a visual communications major, you will use the latest technology in a series of courses that emphasize multimedia production and writing. Later, you can apply your knowledge in an internship with an ad agency, public relations firm, newspaper or magazine, hone your skills and gain valuable hands-on experience in your visual communications specialty. As a senior, you will complete a capstone experience in which you will prepare a multimedia portfolio that will allow you to shine in a competitive job market.

Internationally recognized research projects and first-class instruction are the hallmarks of the biological sciences department.

You will develop a broad base of skills in chemistry, plant and animal science, cellular and molecular biology, ecology and evolution. You will experience lecture-style courses with supplemental laboratories to gain additional hands-on experience. You can also elect to get involved in field research and field classes.

In addition to the challenging standard curriculum, biological sciences majors have the opportunity to be exposed to an unusually strong core of marine sciences.

The bachelor's in music is designed for students who want to major in music while receiving a broad, liberal arts education. B.A. students will select a cognate (12 credits) or minor area (18 credits) outside the School of Music to prepare for a variety of careers that may be interdisciplinary in nature.

Students must satisfy all general education requirements as specified in the chosen degree. These requirements are designed to give students broad experience in liberal arts and sciences and opportunities to develop intellectual skills in analysis and evaluation, as well as competence in written and oral communication. 

Mechanical engineering graduate students can take advantage of small class sizes, excellent teaching, on-campus and off-campus delivery mechanisms and high-quality funded research at UofSC.

The graduate program in mechanical engineering at UofSC provides graduate students with opportunities to acquire a broad foundation of mechanical engineering knowledge, an in-depth research experience at the frontiers of mechanical engineering and skills for life-long learning and professional development. • Demonstrate the ability to conduct research, gather information, write clearly and correctly and present relevant news or persuasive information at a professional level.  
• Demonstrate the ability to think critically, creatively and independently  evaluate their own work and the work of others for accuracy, fairness, clarity, style and correctness.  
• Demonstrate an understanding the history of journalism and mass communications, the diversity of groups in a global society in relationship to communications and the role of journalism and mass communications in society.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical concepts, legal implications, considerations and practices that guide the mass media professions.  
• Demonstrate the ability to apply tools and technologies appropriate for the production, editing and presentation of visual, aural, textual or other media content.  
• Apply basic numerical and statistical concepts and methods appropriate for the communications professions. 

Majors in this field must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 100 semester hours of academic work plus an intensive clinical training program where they receive specific training in one or more areas of emphasis within cardiovascular diagnostics: invasive, noninvasive, and vascular specialties. The first year will focus on the general education requirements of the Carolina Core and the College which include courses in English, mathematics, foreign language, behavioral sciences, history and freshmen level chemistry and biology. The major courses are completed over the next two years and include courses in cell biology, genetics, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and organic chemistry. Students are expected to complete eight hours in entry-level physics, plus four hours in a major level biology or chemistry course plus one or two electives to bring their total credits to 100 hours. The intensive clinical training program replaces the cognate requirement of the College.

Marketing is the function in business and nonbusiness organizations that is responsible for developing, pricing, distributing and promoting products, services and ideas.

Marketing majors in the Darla Moore School of Business will benefit from studying in a department that is widely acclaimed for its scholarly expertise in a variety of areas including consumer psychology, marketing strategy, research methods, behavioral pricing and marketing communications.

As a marketing major, you will develop cutting-edge business knowledge and skills with a strong foundation in liberal arts and sciences. You will also gain global opportunities, cultural awareness and language appreciation. Through your coursework, you will be exposed to continuously updated technology, award-winning faculty members, a team environment, field trips to leading industries and a variety of service-learning opportunities. Through these opportunities and internships, you will be able to develop hands-on experience in the field of marketing.
