Students who are interested in the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree program will receive a broad-based natural science curriculum, preparing those students for further study and natural and environmental public health sciences, medicine and other clinical professions.

Whether you pursue a career in a hotel, restaurant, resort or private club, you will be well prepared with the fundamentals of business: accounting, economics, business law, communications and computer applications.

All hospitality management majors receive a similar range of operational and management instruction. The combination of two mandatory internship experiences and exciting electives will allow you to tailor your learning to a specific setting. In your courses, you will develop important skills including analytical, communication, organization, time management, human resource management, service management and technology skills.

As a physics major, you will be exposed to challenging coursework that will give you a solid foundation in all of the central areas of physics, including Newtonian mechanics, electricity and magnetism, statistical physics and quantum mechanics. You will also have the opportunity to tailor the program to your own interests by choosing from specialized experimental courses or designing your own research program in consultation with our faculty researchers.

The Master of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice program is a professional degree designed to provide criminal justice professionals with coursework in criminal justice system operation, criminology, research methods, and statistics. The degree program provides students with advanced instruction that prepares them to use evidence-based practices in the criminal justice system. Beyond career advancement for practitioners, the masters degree also provides rigorous social science training that prepares students for continued doctoral study.

Our criminal justice program promotes state-of-the-art research and instruction in subject areas that are crucial to the effective and orderly working of modern society.

You will learn theories of and responses to social deviance, law and the legal system, administration theory and evaluation, law enforcement, juvenile justice systems and procedures, and crime prevention models. You will also be able to attend numerous conferences and lectures to broaden your professional perspective.

As a criminal justice major, you will also have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on internship experience that will add to your educational experience. You can gain additional experience by participating in the Campus Patrol Office program, which offers students who qualify an opportunity to gain hands-on experience as an employee of the University of South Carolina Division of Law Enforcement and Safety. Economics majors in the College of Arts and Sciences may earn the B.S. by completing the 24-hour major requirement along with the college core, distribution requirements and cultural-awareness and writing-emphasis requirements as described in the basic degree requirements in liberal arts.

In addition to courses within your major, students in the College of Arts and Sciences must fulfill a cognate or minor. The cognate is intended to support the course work in the major, and it must consist of 12 hours of courses at the advanced level, outside of but related to, the major. In place of the cognate, B.A. students can choose a minor consisting of at least 18 credit hours of prescribed courses.

The following courses fulfill some of the course requirements for the B.S. in Economics:

In this major, you will be required to actively participate in productions (we plan up to six plays per semester). You will have access to outstanding facilities, including two on-campus venues featuring an arena stage (one of the few in the region) and a proscenium stage. Additionally, we offer a Black Box laboratory season to highlight undergraduate talent and have an additional Black Box space specifically designated for student projects and experimental works. Students will also have access to a full costume shop and scenic studio, one of the three largest university scenic shops in the country.

You will also benefit from an active guest artist program, which brings in professional directors, actors and designers from all over the world to work with students. In addition to specific training and skills learned in acting, design and technical areas, our students gain skills in collaboration, project management, creative problem-solving, communication and leadership. You will enjoy small classes for performance and design courses so that you can benefit from one-on-one training with faculty members. Outside of the classroom, you will also work directly with faculty members as a part of the training for main-stage and laboratory rehearsal and performance.

As a geography major, you will take courses in computer cartography, GIS and air photo interpretation/remote sensing. You will also have ample opportunities to study the Earth’s physical features and processes and how this physical environment is modified by human activities. Students may choose to take courses that include the real-world collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of geographic data to prepare you for careers in geography.

Geography undergraduate students may choose one of four tracks to focus on: physical/environmental geography, human/economic geography, geographic information science and general geography.

Finance involves the study of business finance, investments and financial institutions. Students can specialize in corporate finance, investments or financial services.

The Finance Department in the Darla Moore School of Business is composed of outstanding faculty members and researchers whose interests include areas such as bank management, corporate restructuring, investment management, risk management, employee benefits and real estate finance. You will benefit from cutting-edge business knowledge and develop a strong foundation in liberal arts and sciences.
