Have you ever thought of pairing linguistics and psychology? How about biological sciences and literature? By studying a broad range of subjects and designing a program that meets your specific needs, you can earn a college degree that can be applied in unique ways.

Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree program. The degree program is individually designed by each student along with a committee of at least four faculty members from the student's areas of interest.

Bachelor of Arts students tend to focus within the humanities, social sciences and fine arts. Fields of study might include Southern studies, Middle Eastern studies, performance arts management, environmental studies or linguistics.

Our Chemical Engineering graduate program is ranked in the top 30 nationally by the National Research Council and ranked 14th nationally in federally funded chemical research and development by the National Science Foundation.

A graduate degree in chemical engineering can improve your career by equipping you to work on advanced projects or enable you to transition to a new path in research or teaching.

Chemical engineering at UofSC boasts state-of-the-art facilities, a dynamic faculty and rigorous research programs. Incentives for our Ph.D. candidates are the wide selection of research topics, full tuition waiver and high 12-month stipends. Full-time Ph.D. student stipends currently are in excess of $28,000 per year with tuition and partial health insurance support paid by the university. NSF Fellows and other students with similar fellowships can receive stipends totaling over $42,000 per year.

Tourism management majors combine studies in the liberal arts with studies in statistics, accounting, marketing, economics, human resources, service management, finance and information technology, as well as club, hotel and tourism management.

As a tourism management major, you will be involved in field studies, group projects, computer simulations and event and festival planning. The major also offers one of only two Club Management Association of America-certified programs, or you can choose to concentrate in meeting and events. Students wishing to pursue the concentration in club management are required to complete 15 credit hours including club management, club cuisine and service, and advanced club management and a hospitality and tourism internship.

A minimum of two required internships can take tourism management majors to locales from coast to coast and all places in between, with an emphasis on honing your management skills. In addition to internships, you can take advantage of numerous clubs, volunteer opportunities and tourism-related study abroad experiences.

• All BFA Studio Art undergraduate students will define and explain development of art, within their own and other cultures, from pre-history to the present.
• All BFA Studio Art undergraduate students will critically analyze aspects of the design and art making process and evaluate theories, philosophies, and research in the practice of the studio arts.
• All BFA Studio Art undergraduate students will, through their artwork, demonstrate their competency of aesthetic literacy.

The Women’s and Gender Studies Program at the University of South Carolina promotes an understanding of the experiences of women and other underrepresented groups through a complete program of teaching, research, and service to the University, the local community, the state, the nation and the global community. Through its research mission, the program reconceptualizes knowledge, creates new knowledge, and reinterprets existing knowledge through the lens of gender and the prism of diversity. Its teaching mission is to share this knowledge with students so that they learn to think critically, to communicate effectively, to solve problems, and to interpret human experience. Emerging from an activist tradition, the program serves University, local, state, national and global communities by acting as a resource and guide for issues related to women and gender. As an anthropology major, you will gain knowledge in four areas: cultural anthropology, archaeology, linguistic anthropology and biological anthropology. You will experience intensive discussion, multimedia engagement and hands-on applications in many classes, while acquiring skills in research methodology and presentation. Anthropology majors also have the opportunity to participate in research and fieldwork, both abroad and locally.

You will develop skills necessary to appreciate the cultural and biological diversity of humans, while learning how to apply this knowledge in a variety of ways. Many unique opportunities await you, such as getting involved with a field school offered each summer in archaeology and ethnology.

Known for the strength of its research in both theoretical and experimental physics, the department’s research has a global impact. Its experimental nuclear and particle physics groups are involved in cutting-edge international collaborations in the U.S., Europe and the Far East. The theoretical groups in cosmology, quantum theory, nuclear physics and condensed matter are also internationally known. Our experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics groups have labs and projects based locally, some of which are associated with the S.C. SmartState Center focused on nanoscale physics research.

As a physics major, you will be exposed to challenging coursework that will give you a solid foundation in all of the central areas of physics, including Newtonian mechanics, electricity and magnetism, statistical physics and quantum mechanics. You will also have the opportunity to tailor the program to your own interests by choosing from specialized experimental courses or designing your own research program in consultation with our faculty researchers.
 

Are you interested in learning about some of the most pressing social issues of the day, such as immigration, discrimination, economic and social inequality, demographic change, race and ethnic relations, and health and well-being? If so, our sociology program may be right for you. You can pursue a B.A. or B.S. degree in sociology or continue your learning by pursuing the accelerated bachelor's/graduate study plan, in which you receive a master's degree in sociology. The department offers graduate degrees at the master's and doctoral levels.

As a sociology major, you will explore complex issues of power, inequality, identity and conflict across a variety of different social groups and social institutions, such as schools, families and law enforcement. You will also learn to question common wisdoms, raise important questions, examine arguments, synthesize information, analyze data, make conclusions and present arguments supported by empirical research and sociological theory, both orally and in writing.

As part of your learning, you will be able to take advantage of outstanding facilities that include the Laboratory for Sociological Research, one of the largest facilities of its type in the world, and a statistics laboratory. You can also develop your own research project or collaborate with faculty members on a project and participate in department events, including guest speaker presentations and workshops.

In the real estate program through the nationally ranked Darla Moore School of Business, you can expect to learn the concepts, principles and methodologies used in real estate analysis and decision-making.

As a real estate major, you will focus on topics such as market analysis, real estate finance, property appraisal, investment analysis and portfolio management. You will learn about appraisal, development and purchasing of houses and other properties.
