As the largest art department in the state, our art studio provides you with a wide array of opportunities in concentrations such as ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

The art studio program offers students the opportunity to choose from two undergraduate degrees: the Bachelor of Arts in Art Studio and the Bachelor of Fine Arts. The B.A. is a well-rounded liberal arts major that offers a solid foundation in multiple types of art and is ideal for students interested in double majoring. The B.F.A. is a pre-professional degree that allows students to focus in one of our seven concentration areas: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking or sculpture (3D studies).

Tourism management majors combine studies in the liberal arts with studies in statistics, accounting, marketing, economics, human resources, service management, finance and information technology, as well as club, hotel and tourism management.

As a tourism management major, you will be involved in field studies, group projects, computer simulations and event and festival planning. The major also offers one of only two Club Management Association of America-certified programs, or you can choose to concentrate in meeting and events. Students wishing to pursue the concentration in club management are required to complete 15 credit hours including club management, club cuisine and service, and advanced club management and a hospitality and tourism internship.

A minimum of two required internships can take tourism management majors to locales from coast to coast and all places in between, with an emphasis on honing your management skills. In addition to internships, you can take advantage of numerous clubs, volunteer opportunities and tourism-related study abroad experiences.

The B.A. in Environmental Studies degree incorporates critical social, economic, policy, communications and/or humanities components that are not within the B.S. degree. The curriculum prepares students to address complex environmental problems requiring knowledge and understanding from multiple social and science disciplines that are framed in an environmental context. Students learn to make sound analyses and judgments about interdisciplinary environmental challenges and to seek and develop sustainable solutions that productively integrate social and economic needs with scientific and technical understanding.

Environmental Studies majors may combine coursework in sustainability, anthropology, political science, geography, history, economics, business, media arts and journalism to create an individually tailored curriculum relative to their career goals.

Impending environmental challenges include climate change, increasing drought and other extreme weather events and their impacts on infrastructure and food, energy and water supply, loss of biodiversity, increases in infectious disease, and invasive species. Environmental scientists may find themselves conducting field research to quantify such issues, while environmental studies majors may use their skills to incorporate that data into policy, advocacy and sustainable business practices.

Economics majors in the College of Arts and Sciences may earn the B.S. by completing the 24-hour major requirement along with the college core, distribution requirements and cultural-awareness and writing-emphasis requirements as described in the basic degree requirements in liberal arts.

In addition to courses within your major, students in the College of Arts and Sciences must fulfill a cognate or minor. The cognate is intended to support the course work in the major, and it must consist of 12 hours of courses at the advanced level, outside of but related to, the major. In place of the cognate, B.A. students can choose a minor consisting of at least 18 credit hours of prescribed courses.

The challenge of 21st-century communications is to combine the information-gathering function-research and data bases-with the disciplines of disseminating information-journalism, advertising, public relations, visual communications, and mass communications.
 
The college’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications is professionally oriented and grounded strongly in the liberal arts. It offers instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Course work is offered in electronic and print journalism, advertising, public relations, visual communications, and mass communications to train students in both the processes and effects of mass communication.

• Demonstrate the ability to conduct research, gather information, write clearly and correctly and present relevant news or persuasive information at a professional level.
• Think critically, creatively and independently; evaluate their own work and the work of others for accuracy, fairness, clarity, style and correctness.
• Understand the history of journalism and mass communications, the diversity of groups in a global society in relationship to communications and the role of journalism and mass communications in society.
• Understand the ethical concepts, legal implications, considerations and practices that guide the mass media professions.
• Demonstrate the ability to apply tools and technologies appropriate for the production, editing and presentation of visual, aural, textual or other media content.
• Apply basic numerical and statistical concepts and methods appropriate for the communications professions.

Are you interested in learning about some of the most pressing social issues of the day, such as immigration, discrimination, economic and social inequality, demographic change, race and ethnic relations, and health and well-being? If so, our sociology program may be right for you. You can pursue a B.A. or B.S. degree in sociology or continue your learning by pursuing the accelerated bachelor's/graduate study plan, in which you receive a master's degree in sociology. The department offers graduate degrees at the master's and doctoral levels.

As a sociology major, you will explore complex issues of power, inequality, identity and conflict across a variety of different social groups and social institutions, such as schools, families and law enforcement. You will also learn to question common wisdoms, raise important questions, examine arguments, synthesize information, analyze data, make conclusions and present arguments supported by empirical research and sociological theory, both orally and in writing.

As part of your learning, you will be able to take advantage of outstanding facilities that include the Laboratory for Sociological Research, one of the largest facilities of its type in the world, and a statistics laboratory. You can also develop your own research project or collaborate with faculty members on a project and participate in department events, including guest speaker presentations and workshops.

In the real estate program through the nationally ranked Darla Moore School of Business, you can expect to learn the concepts, principles and methodologies used in real estate analysis and decision-making.

As a real estate major, you will focus on topics such as market analysis, real estate finance, property appraisal, investment analysis and portfolio management. You will learn about appraisal, development and purchasing of houses and other properties. Our distinguished faculty excels in the field of real estate and will encourage you to expand your educational experiences through internships and study abroad.

As a history major, through in-depth analysis of the evolution of social, economics, cultural-intellectual and political patterns and events, you’ll develop an understanding of and appreciation for the life and development of various cultures, institutions and civilizations. You will become an expert at answering the questions “Who are we, and how did we get here?” You will learn how to situate yourself in the long continuum of human experience and how to find meaning in the past.

The skills you develop as a history major will give you the capacity to make the voices, stories and events of the past come alive and to give shape to the experiences and processes that have defined the interaction of humans with each other and with the world around them.

A selected number of history majors or minors spend their junior or senior year (or a spring or fall semester) at the University of Warwick, Coventry, England, while maintaining their normal progress toward graduation. Warwick has the United Kingdom’s second-highest-ranked history department

Our criminal justice program promotes state-of-the-art research and instruction in subject areas that are crucial to the effective and orderly working of modern society.

You will learn theories of and responses to social deviance, law and the legal system, administration theory and evaluation, law enforcement, juvenile justice systems and procedures, and crime prevention models. You will also be able to attend numerous conferences and lectures to broaden your professional perspective.

As a criminal justice major, you will also have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on internship experience that will add to your educational experience. You can gain additional experience by participating in the Campus Patrol Office program, which offers students who qualify an opportunity to gain hands-on experience as an employee of the University of South Carolina Division of Law Enforcement and Safety. Our curriculum provides a strong foundation in the core areas of electrical engineering and prepares you for employment in industry or for graduate school. It integrates the study of engineering and computing and exposes you to the full breadth of electrical engineering with core courses in the major specialty areas. A series of vertically integrated laboratory courses provide hands-on experience in electrical and electronics engineering. Career plan electives allow you to concentrate in a specific area of interest.
