M.F.A. in Creative Writing prepares students to both be professional writers in the world and to be visionary literary citizens. Situated in the heart of Brooklyn, LIU’s MFA in Creative Writing is an innovative creative writing program centered on world literature, multi-genre education, and publishing. Our applied MFA prepares students for careers in creative writing, academia, translation, and publishing. During their two-year residential program, students have the opportunity to study poetry, fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and translation, and thus receive a robust multi-genre education.

In our MFA’s publishing courses, students study directly with professionals at the heart of the publishing industry. During the course of their study, students learn about commercial, independent, and academic publishing with frequent guest literary agents, editors, and leaders from seminal national and international literary arts organizations. We also focus on the performative aspects of the writing industry including audiobooks, public performances and speaking, and adaptations. Students learn about the intersection between book publishing and popular and new media. Students also gain vital publishing industry experience through literary internships centered in New York City and through the practicum of editing LIU’s flagship literary journals.

This program is supported by a cutting-edge learning and design center in partnership with Fortune 500 Engineering Company, Dassault Systems (see https://www.3ds.com). This center will provide students with the opportunity to develop research projects and prototypes with the same big data and artificial intelligence platforms used in cutting-edge industry applications.

The Bachelor of Science in Data Analytics (BSDA) will prepare students for the growing demand in industries for data-literate professionals who can understand and perform data analytics and apply the knowledge in decision-making in various practical fields. In addition to the common core curriculum, the upper-division coursework innovatively consists of the following modules:

Foundational Module: programming in Python, Data Analytics with Excel, R, and Python, Data Structures and Algorithms
Core Module: Database Management, Data Visualization, Advanced Statistics, Data Mining and Business Intelligence, Machine Leaning, Intro to AI
Applied Module: Data Analytics Ethics, Intro to Fintech, Intro to Modern Cryptography, Computational Genomics, Deep Learning, and Capstone Project

B.S. in Computer Science degree focuses on the concepts and techniques used in the design and the development of advanced software systems, network designs and applications. Students in this program explore the conceptual foundations of computer science – its fundamental algorithms, programming languages, operating systems and software engineering techniques. In addition, they can choose from innovative electives, including artificial intelligence, database systems, graphical user interfaces, web development, e-commerce and computer networks, and system and network administration among others. As with the introductory sequence, these advanced courses stress hands-on learning.

Graduates of the B.S. in Computer Science program have gone on to highly successful careers with Bloomberg, JPMorgan Chase, Accenture, MTA, DOT, New York City government agencies, Con Edison, NYU Medical Center, and other technology-based corporations.

The profession of social work is growing. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2018) projects a high demand for social workers due to job growth in fields, such as mental health and substance abuse, and settings, such as hospitals. It’s never been a better time to join this dynamic and diverse profession.

The program prepares entry-level social work practitioners to meet the growing, unique and varied social service needs of the diverse communities of Brooklyn, New York City, and beyond. Graduates of the program have strong clinical, advocacy and administrative skills that they use in community-based, governmental, and for-profit organizations across the region.

The program partners with local community-based organizations to provide well-trained generalist practice social workers, prepared to work with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities through a variety of methods.

In addition to preparing students for careers in social work, the program also prepares students who seek to pursue a graduate degree in social work and in other related fields. Students who successfully complete the program may be eligible for advanced standing in a graduate program in Social Work. With Advanced Standing, students only need to complete one-year of graduate study to earn their master degree.

The Roc Nation’s School of Music, Sports & Entertainment’s innovative B.A. in Sports Communication & Marketing is the first of it’s kind in the New York metro area. The program prepares students for careers in a dynamic and growing spectrum of sports media. As the $500 billion sports industry continues to grow, there will be increased demand for professionals with business and communications training.

Drawing on years of industry experience, LIU’s faculty experts will create a dynamic course of study through experiential learning and access to world-renowned sports industry professionals.

Students will gain practical experience in sports writing and reporting; promotion of sports teams, events and products; performing as a play-by-play announcer or program host; and production of sports content for traditional, online and social media. Students will also have the opportunity to engage with LIU’s robust alumni network, which includes notable sports reporters, publicists and experts in New York City and beyond. Graduates of the program will be ready for careers in sports broadcasting, sports management, or sports information.

LIU Brooklyn’s location in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn provides students with ample access to and opportunities with sports franchises — Barclays Center, home of the Brooklyn Nets, is just 1/2- mile from campus.

The B.A. in Journalism provides skills and experience for media careers in print, broadcast and online journalism. The curriculum keeps pace with the fast-changing communications landscape in the digital age. The Journalism major also prepares students for the fields of public relations, corporate communications and the law. Students apply their skills at the campus newspaper, radio and television stations as well as at professional internships.

LIU Brooklyn’s Journalism department offers a unique program in Sports Journalism, PR & Marketing. The sports industry is a multi-billion-dollar global industry with a job market that continues to expand. The concentration prepares students for positions in sports reporting, sports information, fantasy sports, public relations and marketing for professional sports franchises. Internship possibilities include the Barclays Center, Madison Square Garden, Fox Sports, the Yes Network, CBS Sports, WFAN, and Sports Illustrated.

The Master of Public Health (M.P.H) is a professional degree program for individuals seeking training and experience in applied public health. The 42-credit program has strong working relationships with community organizations and health care providers as well as with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. It answers a growing demand for skilled public health professionals and leads to diverse and rewarding career opportunities. Candidates interested in enrolling in the program must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and must fulfill the academic criteria for admission.

Public health is the science and art of protecting and improving the health of communities (families, neighborhoods, groups of people) and the population as a whole. Every day, millions of people suffer from preventable injuries, illnesses, and chronic diseases resulting in impaired quality of life and premature death. The goal of Public Health professionals is to help prevent disease, disability, and premature death. The vision of the Public Health movement is health for all and healthy people in healthy communities. Teams of Public Health professionals from a variety of backgrounds use strategies such as: policy, system/service, and built-environment changes, education, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and research.

For those just beginning in their careers or those seeking a career change, the nursing profession offers a broad range of roles and options in meeting the health needs of individuals, families, communities and populations. 

 The School of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing preparing new nurses through two tracks:

• Full-time day track
• Accelerated 2nd-degree track—a 16-month program for students who already hold a baccalaureate degree in another field. This track offers admission in the Summer, Spring, and Fall. 
• Integrate knowledge from the liberal arts and sciences when providing professional nursing care to diverse individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations throughout the life span and across the continuum of healthcare settings.
• Identify principles of leadership and management for quality improvement and patient safety to the delivery of high quality professional nursing care within current cultural, economic, organizational, and political perspectives.
• Integrate evidence-based best practices into professional nursing practice to improve patient outcomes.
• Use information technology ethically to support evidence-based practice, decision-making, and demonstrate competence using patient care technology in the delivery of quality patient care across the continuum of care.
• Examine healthcare, financial, and regulatory policies that influence the practice of professional nursing and access to care and promote advocacy for consumers and the profession.
• Collaborate with members of the interprofessional team to improve communication to provide patient centered care.
• Provide population-based professional nursing care that integrates concepts of demographics, social determinants of health, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, risk assessment, genetics/genomics, equity, and resource utilization in the delivery of quality and safe care.
• Demonstrate professionalism and accountability in nursing practice applying professional values of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice.
• Apply knowledge, skills, and attitudes using clinical reasoning to develop nursing interventions that recognize culture, spirituality, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, and sexual orientation in the delivery of professional nursing care to all consumers across the lifespan.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Technology, Entrepreneurship and Production puts students inside the recording studio and prepares them for a behind-the-scenes careers in the music industry. Students will develop exceptional competency in all aspects of the music making process.

New York City is the birthplace of some of the world’s most iconic artists as well as companies pioneering the $20 billion global music industry. Program graduates will have the tools to build successful careers in creative entrepreneurship, venue management, distribution, performance, songwriting, engineering and production.

The program will feature an experiential learning approach, grounded in the real world of music production and marketing, and follow a learning cohort model that places peer collaboration at the center of the educational experience. The program was founded around four pillars vital to the success of the modern musician:
