Its rigors emphasize conceptual problem-solving, technical expertise, meeting deadlines, and other professional practices. We stress drawing knowledge and skill as the basis for all visual conceptualization. This is applied to both traditional and digital mediums.

We’ll sharpen your professional standards through sophomore and junior reviews. Our program prepares you to work at a professional level, with a comprehensive understanding of illustration and the ability to merge your client’s needs with your personal style.

Harp
Harp Ensemble, Repertoire and Studio Class and Harp Teaching Principles are just a few of the courses that harpists at Hartt partake in and enjoy. Orchestral and solo opportunities are many at Hartt, with monthly opportunities to perform solos or chamber music in the Evening with Guitar and Harp concert series. Hartt harpists are encouraged to partake in as many performance, competition and growth opportunities as possible, both in school, and in the vibrant capital region of Hartford.

Robotics Engineering

This program will prepare you to fulfill the growing and expected demands for entry-level careers in robotics. Dive into a hands-on experience around robotics principals, designs, and operation. Students in this program will especially benefit from the laboratories in CETA, including two new robotics labs.

Robotics is the discipline that combines computer, electrical, mechanical, sensing, and computer science in real time. It plays a role in nearly every aspect of our lives, and we can see its applications in automation, manufacturing, the defense industry, commerce—like Amazon—and the healthcare industry to mention a few.

Civil Engineering
The civil engineering program prepares you for careers in various areas such as structural, geotechnical, transportation, environmental, water resources, and construction engineering.

Civil engineers will help solve critical challenges of the 21st century by rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure; planning, designing, constructing, and maintaining our built environment while protecting our natural resources; and leading multidisciplinary teams to achieve a sustainable world and raise the global quality of life.

Our program provides undergraduate laboratories and student-oriented collaborative space for research and project-based learning opportunities. Students creatively develop innovative solutions to issues facing society working alongside engaged faculty members and professional practitioners.

Computer Science
If you enjoy solving problems using computers, and you like to be creative and use your imagination, consider a degree in computer science. The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program prepares you for a career in the computer profession, business, or education, while also allowing you to explore other areas of interest. It is recommended if you are planning to pursue graduate school.

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science gives you a solid foundation in both theoretical and applied computer science.  Your first year, get a solid foundation of mathematics and the fundamentals of computing. Then you build upon that knowledge with more in-depth courses.  

Instrumental Performance - Bassoon

The overall size of the woodwind department and instrumental studios provides each student significant individual attention and performance opportunities. Whether you aspire to work as a professional performer, music educator, producer, manager, acoustic engineer, or other, we have a place for you in Hartt's woodwind department.

Music Management
When you decide to major in music management, you have the desire to pursue a strong musical and business course of study.  Playing a musical instrument or being a vocalist is required for entrance to the program. This can include classical instruments or classical voice, jazz instruments or voice, or commercial instruments (bass, drums, guitar, keyboard, or voice.)  

You will receive training in music theory, piano and keyboard, and music history, as well as weekly one hour lessons and coaching sessions with teachers in the performance area.  This combined with arts management and business courses give you the career ready skills to enter the industry.

Not only will you participate in music management events, but you also have the opportunity to participate in many of the large ensembles that make up Hartt’s music training program.

Health Sciences - Pre-Optometry

The BS/OD program is for the academically outstanding student with strong, realistic motivation toward the optometric profession. Initial study at the University of Hartford allows you to complete the general education and basic science requirements for the BS in health science degree and the prerequisites necessary for professional study.

The BS degree is awarded by the University of Hartford following the successful completion of the first year of graduate study. Students who are not in the accelerated program typically complete the BS degree in four years at the University of Hartford.

The optometry program requires four years of combined academic and clinical training leading to the OD degree, which is a prerequisite for licensure eligibility in the United States. The New England College of Optometry provides students with an accredited four-year professional optometry curriculum.

Music Theory
The Master of Music (MM) degree in music theory is designed to prepare students for a teaching or research career in music theory. Applicants to the program usually have an undergraduate degree in music theory or its equivalent. Graduate music theory majors follow a four-semester curriculum of 36 credits. It includes instruction in modern analysis, Schenkerian analysis, history of music theory, and seminars in music theory and music history. An important feature of the curriculum is the flexibility in elective course work appropriate to the interests and needs of the student.

If you love to read and write, the Department of English and Modern Languages is where you will learn critical reading, organizational skills, and research techniques. Plus you’ll learn how to use your imagination in our writing-intensive classes! Our faculty are award-winning teachers and published authors who take an interest in your work and get to know you well in our small class sizes.

We offer two areas of emphasis to choose from:

The Creative Writing emphasis helps you learn good research, writing, editing and storytelling skills while producing your own stories, poems, plays, critical and personal essays.

In the Literature emphasis, you study literature in historical and cultural contexts and learn how the works of generations of writers explore unifying ideas, ideals, achievements, and aspirations.
