The International Pathway Program (IPP) is designed especially for international students who have proven their academic ability but need to strengthen their English skills to achieve positive results in the collegiate environment. Students study a combination of English Language courses and credit-bearing academic courses. So they can earn credits towards their degree from the beginning.

Robotics Engineering
This program will prepare you to fulfill the growing and expected demands for entry-level careers in robotics. Dive into a hands-on experience around robotics principals, designs, and operation. Students in this program will especially benefit from the laboratories in CETA, including two new robotics labs.

Robotics is the discipline that combines computer, electrical, mechanical, sensing, and computer science in real time. It plays a role in nearly every aspect of our lives, and we can see its applications in automation, manufacturing, the defense industry, commerce—like Amazon—and the healthcare industry to mention a few.

Hartt’s music history program enables you to explore Western music in its historical and cultural contexts. From broad survey courses to in-depth special seminars, majors, minors, you gain a comprehensive understanding of all periods of Western music.

As an important feature of our curriculum is flexible elective courses that are suited to your interests and needs, our electives are often designed with our current students in mind. To that end, courses offered within the last two years have included opera history, string quartet literature, C.P.E. Bach, pre-tonal theory and analysis, medievalism in modern media, cognitive psychology, and critical editing; students may also take courses on jazz and African-American musical traditions in the Jackie McLean Jazz Studies Division.

In addition to our rigorous coursework, you will participate in a number of our performance organizations, including our Baroque ensemble, the Collegium Musicum. Hartt’s wide collection of early instruments, including recorders, Renaissance lutes and flutes, harpsichords, clavichord, baroque bows, shawms, and sackbuts, are available for use and provide you with an active and creative learning environment.

Within the music history major, you will choose between scholarship and research emphasis or performance practices emphasis. Our scholarship and research emphasis systematically investigates various elements of music in written papers, employing a rigorous scholarly approach. Our performance practice emphasis combines your interest in performing with the study of treatises, earlier performance techniques, ornamentation, and related issues.

Hartt's Music Education Division offers you one of the nation's most comprehensive courses of study. Combining the rigors of conservatory training with a solid foundation in music education, the program prepares you for a career as an elementary and secondary school music educator. In addition to general music, choral music, wind and string instrumental pedagogy, music education majors receive training in such methodologies as Kodály, Suzuki, and Orff.

As an undergraduate, you will pursue a four-year instrumental or vocal emphasis. Students interested in jazz (saxophone, trumpet, and trombone) can pursue a double major in Music Education and Jazz Studies (5-year program). Please note that students interested in this double major must perform a jazz and classical audition because they will receive private instruction in both areas.

Physics
Our Bachelor of Arts in Physics is the perfect choice if you want to study physics but are not necessarily intending to become a physicist. The program gives you a strong scientific background and analytical and problem-solving skills to pursue a variety of related careers. You customize your degree by choosing electives that help you explore your career options.

Finance
The finance major gives you a foundation in corporate finance, investments, portfolio management, and international finance. And, pursue your interests in more specialized areas such as entrepreneurial finance, money and banking, portfolio management, and real estate finance.

Dance Performance
The dance performance emphasis is designed to prepare students for careers in dance as professional performing artists. Students in this program focus on technique, performance, and choreography while participating in some pedagogical training as well. In addition, they partake of the considerable resources of academic excellence available through the University of Hartford. This program offers future dance performers the opportunity to develop their craft and artistry in a challenging yet nurturing environment while expanding their ability to function as engaged and educated citizens throughout their careers.

Music Vocal Performance

At Hartt, growth in technique and musicianship, guided by distinguished faculty, is the focus of vocal study. Our rich undergraduate and graduate course of study includes private voice lessons, coachings, vocal pedagogy, language and diction study, opera stagecraft, and our invigorating core music curriculum.

Ballet Pedagogy
The ballet pedagogy emphasis is designed to prepare students for a career in dance education at the highest level. Students are trained to teach ballet to all ages in professional school and university dance programs. This major strongly emphasizes pedagogical structure and theory, covering different styles and schools of ballet and modern dance, from the earliest pre-ballet to coaching the advanced dancer. This emphasis incorporates classroom teaching and internships in both The Hartt School Community Division's dance classes and in area public schools. Students in the pedagogy program participate fully in the many performance opportunities available to Hartt's dancers. This program offers future dance teachers the opportunity to develop their ability to function as engaged and educated citizens throughout their careers.

Guitar
In 1968, Hartt graduated its first guitar major and over the years the program has expanded to offer a Master of Music, Graduate Professional Diploma, Doctor of Musical Arts, and Artist Diploma.

At Hartt, you will participate in masterclasses given by world renowned performers. Past guest artists include Oscar Ghiglia, Antigoni Goni, and Andrew York.

Our graduates presently hold or have held guitar positions at various prestigious institutions, including New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory, The Longy School of Music, and Oberlin Conservatory.

Our alumni and present students have won or been finalists in the Alirio Diaz International Guitar Competition in Venezuela, Guitar Foundation of America International Guitar Competition, American String Teachers Competition, MTNA competition, and Appalachian State Guitar Competition.

In addition to classical guitar training, you will also experience chamber music, guitar pedagogy, guitar literature, lute and baroque guitar tablature, and electric guitar styles. Our goal is to graduate students who are well-prepared to enter the fields of concert performance and college teaching. Towards that end we hold weekly performance classes that are required of all performance majors. In addition, every year, we sponsor six to eight public performances as part of our Evening with Guitar concert series.  This provides our students the opportunity to develop and refine their performance skills in a professional setting.
