Music Theory
The Music Theory program at The Hartt School is designed to prepare you for graduate studies, teaching, or a research career. Our students study tonal harmony, tonal analysis, modern techniques, tonal counterpoint, modal counterpoint, keyboard harmony, score reading, orchestration, and music theory pedagogy.

The diverse backgrounds of Hartt’s Music Theory faculty allow theory majors to approach music from multiple angles, gain appreciation and respect for varied perspectives, and ultimately shape an intellectual approach to music theory that best suits them.

Marketing
The Marketing major includes core business classes, to give you a background in all areas of for-profit companies and nonprofits. Then, delve deeper into the marketing field with more specialized classes. You may also choose a concentration in International Marketing, Marketing Communications, Retailing, and Services Marketing to focus your career path. An internship ties it all together, giving you hands-on experience for your resume and skills to use in your first job.

Sociology
Our sociology program is designed to increase your understanding of factors that determine social relationships and social organization. You take courses that cover current social issues like race relations, inequality, health care, gender, and modern family life. We encourage you to participate in an individually designed internships so you can combine your academics with your future career interests.

Computer Engineering
We are living in the era of the Internet. Almost any device or issue you can think of (computer networks, cyber security, controls for robotics, telephones, and more) involves computer hardware and software. Devices enhance how we work, play, and communicate. The design, development, and maintenance of devices involves critical teams of hardware and software specialists.

A wide variety of skills and expertise are needed in this area, from traditional hardware design and engineering, to computer programming. The most exciting new area involves bridging the gap between hardware and software to focus on the application of computer systems to real-world problems. Through this program, you will gain the necessary skills to design, build, repair, and maintain this type of equipment and tools used in everyday life.

Engineering Technology (Contract Major)

The Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science gives you the flexibility to tailor your curriculum to satisfy your individual talents and goals. The program combines a set of required core courses with a wide variety of elective courses in the various areas of computer science.

Clarinet

Health Sciences - Pre-Podiatry
The BS/DPM program is for the academically outstanding student with strong, realistic motivation toward the podiatric profession. Initial study at the University of Hartford allows you to complete the general education and basic science requirements for the BS in health science degree and the prerequisites necessary for professional study.

The BS degree is awarded by the University of Hartford following the successful completion of the first year of graduate study.  Students who are not in the accelerated program typically complete the BS degree in four years at the University of Hartford.

The podiatry program requires four years of combined academic and clinical training leading to the DPM degree, which is a prerequisite for licensure eligibility in the United States. The New York College of Podiatric Medicine provides students with an accredited four-year professional podiatry curriculum.

Organizational Psychology
The integration of theory and practice in our MSOP program prepares you to lead, manage, and/or consult with dynamic and diverse organizations operating in a global environment. Courses are taken in the Department of Psychology, School of Communication, and Barney School of Business, students develop unique analytical skills and accumulate knowledge from the differing perspectives of these schools of thought.

Guitar
In 1968, Hartt graduated its first guitar major and over the years the program has expanded to offer a Master of Music, Graduate Professional Diploma, Doctor of Musical Arts, and Artist Diploma.

At Hartt, you will participate in masterclasses given by world renowned performers. Past guest artists include Oscar Ghiglia, Antigoni Goni, and Andrew York.

Our graduates presently hold or have held guitar positions at various prestigious institutions, including New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory, The Longy School of Music, and Oberlin Conservatory.

Our alumni and present students have won or been finalists in the Alirio Diaz International Guitar Competition in Venezuela, Guitar Foundation of America International Guitar Competition, American String Teachers Competition, MTNA competition, and Appalachian State Guitar Competition.

In addition to classical guitar training, you will also experience chamber music, guitar pedagogy, guitar literature, lute and baroque guitar tablature, and electric guitar styles. Our goal is to graduate students who are well-prepared to enter the fields of concert performance and college teaching. Towards that end we hold weekly performance classes that are required of all performance majors. In addition, every year, we sponsor six to eight public performances as part of our Evening with Guitar concert series.  This provides our students the opportunity to develop and refine their performance skills in a professional setting.

Double Bass

Double bass activities include

• Weekly private lessons (technical and musical development of traditional and contemporary techniques and repertoire, and orchestral music)
• Orchestra Repertoire Class (excerpts and the audition process)
• Scales/Technique Class (compliments the work done in private lessons on achieving technical mastery)
• Repertoire Class (explores all aspects of the double bass literature and history, by listening to recordings, looking at scores, and discussing various topics)
