English Secondary Education

The curriculum features a combination of English courses and education courses in a structured program that includes practice teaching.

In your English classes, work with award-winning published authors and poets who share your passion for teaching. In your education classes, acquire the qualities and expertise that make a great teacher such as:

• Organizational skills

The education curriculum gives you a theoretical base according to the state requirements, and a practical application of carefully considered educational principles. In addition, you receive a solid grounding in the essentials of the subject matter that you will go on to teach.

Illustration
Its rigors emphasize conceptual problem-solving, technical expertise, meeting deadlines, and other professional practices. We stress drawing knowledge and skill as the basis for all visual conceptualization. This is applied to both traditional and digital mediums.

We’ll sharpen your professional standards through sophomore and junior reviews. Our program prepares you to work at a professional level, with a comprehensive understanding of illustration and the ability to merge your client’s needs with your personal style.

Printmaking
You will learn the basics of the major techniques and must achieve mastery in lithography and etching. Black-and-white and color processes are taught in all media within the program. You are also encouraged to pursue other areas of the printmaking curriculum, such as relief, monotype, letterpress printing, and book arts. The work will lead to your senior exhibition and help prepare you for graduate school or a career in printmaking and the arts.

Lectures, demonstrations, and workshops with well-known visiting artists and master printers further enhance the curriculum, including the annual Hartford Print Workshop. This workshop brings in artists who work with students and master printers to create editioned prints in the HAS printmaking studios.

Music Education: Research Emphasis
The Research emphasis prepares the student for further investigative research in music education and provides a foundation for future DMA or PhD studies. A thesis is required as part of the research emphasis.

The harp studio at Hartt is a supportive community of talented, friendly harpists. Learn about harp at Hartt, including undergraduate and graduate admission and audition requirements and faculty information.

Harp Ensemble, Repertoire and Studio Class and Harp Teaching Principles are just a few of the courses that harpists at Hartt partake in and enjoy. Orchestral and solo opportunities are many at Hartt, with monthly opportunities to perform solos or chamber music in the Evening with Guitar and Harp concert series. Hartt harpists are encouraged to partake in as many performance, competition and growth opportunities as possible, both in school, and in the vibrant capital region of Hartford.

French Horn

Through weekly privates lessons, and weekly studio classes, you will focus on small ensemble and solo playing. At Hartt, you will receive comprehensive musical training while developing innovative ideas and career ready skills while gaining exposure to nationally and internationally recognized musicians (recent guest artists include Gene Pokorney of CSO, Julie Landsman of The Met, Ray Mase of ABQ.)

Performing Arts Management
As a performing arts management major at Hartt, you will learn the skills to have a career in the performing arts of the commercial music business.  You are given the opportunity to concentrate in many different areas of management and business including the recording industry, touring, arts marketing, fundraising, for and non-profit management and entrepreneurial studies. Not only will you explore a variety of current problems inherent to the industry through classroom discussions, guest speakers, case studies and assignments, but also attend conferences and go on field trips to Connecticut arts institutions, as well as those in Boston and New York.

Core classes give you practical and hands-on experience including Arts Management Practicum and Internship, which enhance your leadership, teamwork and networking skills, while helping you grow personally and professionally. Recent students interned at The Bushnell Center for the Arts, The Newport Jazz Festival, Live Nation, City Parks Foundation, Tanglewood, Motema Records and many more.

With a Bachelor of Arts degree, your career-ready skills will be put to work at talent agencies, recording studios, performing arts centers, artist management companies, as well as professional dance and theatre companies.

Music Management
When you decide to major in music management, you have the desire to pursue a strong musical and business course of study.  Playing a musical instrument or being a vocalist is required for entrance to the program. This can include classical instruments or classical voice, jazz instruments or voice, or commercial instruments (bass, drums, guitar, keyboard, or voice.)  

You will receive training in music theory, piano and keyboard, and music history, as well as weekly one hour lessons and coaching sessions with teachers in the performance area.  This combined with arts management and business courses give you the career ready skills to enter the industry.

Not only will you participate in music management events, but you also have the opportunity to participate in many of the large ensembles that make up Hartt’s music training program.

Sculpture
Students in the sculpture sculpture explore a wide range of approaches to sculpture production. Our program recognizes the broad diversity of styles, techniques, and independent conceptual visions that define the field of contemporary sculpture.

Politics and Government
If you are planning a career in law, government, the civil services, politics, journalism, or the nonprofit sector, or policy analysis, our politics and government program gives you the opportunity to explore your interests and get hands-on experience before you graduate.
Politics and government is the study of policy, government, and law giving you an understanding about the processes by which power, authority, influence, control, freedom, wealth, and other political resources are competitively pursued, captured, and distributed. You also study how these become public policies, part of government, and the law.
