Think fashion is only about great designs? Think again. Producing great designers is only part of the apparel design program at the University of Delaware. In addition to becoming proficient in conceptualization, drawing and rendering, flat pattern development, draping and product development, students explore and address the challenges in the apparel industry.

Fashion design students develop an understanding of the complexities of the industry and responses necessary to build a more sustainable model. Computer-aided design, portfolio development, textiles, and historical costume courses enable our students to have a holistic understanding of the present and future needs of the fashion design industry.

The international business studies (IBS) major is designed to prepare you to conduct business successfully around the world.

By placing equal emphasis on business and international studies, including advanced language training and a semester abroad, the IBS program will teach you to apply business principles to a region of the world in that region’s native language.

This specialized international training will give you excellent preparation for a wide variety of careers as markets continue to become more globalized.

If you enjoy living and working in different cultures, speaking different languages and interacting with people from various regions of the world, IBS is the major for you.

Economics places you at the juncture of social science, business and social policy. This fascinating subject helps explain the behavior of individuals, groups and organizations.

As an economics student, you will study how markets work to determine what is produced, how it is produced and how income is distributed. You will explore subjects like the role and impact of international trade, the effect of monopolies on the economy and the problems of unemployment and inflation.

This work will help you develop a strong understanding of businesses, markets and financial organizations. This means that you’ll graduate prepared for careers in the private, public and academic sectors.

Earn either a bachelor of science (B.S.) or a bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree in economics depending on your strengths in mathematics and quantitative skills (B.S.) or foreign language (B.A.).

The B.A. in European Studies blends the humanities and the social sciences. Offered jointly by the Departments of History; Political Science; and Languages, Literatures and Cultures, this interdisciplinary major combines language training with courses in history, politics and literature. Accordingly, it offers students a comprehensive knowledge of a particular European country and culture (France, Germany, Italy, Spain or Russia are all choices) within a broader transnational European context. Elective courses can be taken in art history, philosophy, music or any other subject germane to a student’s chosen focus. Faculty guide students in designing a curriculum that will strengthen knowledge of both their target area and Europe as a whole. Study abroad in Europe during a winter session or semester program is also encouraged. The combined effect is a body of knowledge that can launch careers in international business, law school, government agencies, NGOs and a range of graduate programs in the humanities and social sciences.

Sociology is the study of social organizations, social change and the social causes and consequences of human behavior in the modern world. The sociology major offers a liberal arts curriculum that integrates theory and methods with courses focusing on contemporary social issues and problems. Emphasis is placed on inequalities of race, class and gender; social justice; deviance and criminology; social correlates of health and wellbeing; disasters and the environment; and law and society. The major provides students with foundational skills for informed citizenship and active participation in their communities. Sociology teaches a distinctive way of looking at society and offers unique insights into social behavior through research and other opportunities for experiential learning.

As an operations management (OM) major, you’ll learn about the processes that companies use to transform resources into goods and services.

As an OM professional, you’ll help companies make important decisions about product creation, development, production and distribution while focusing on efficiency and balancing supply and demand. This requires a mastery of technology, data analysis and critical decision-making.

If you enjoy solving problems using the latest technology, utilizing math to improve real-world situations, analyzing data and explaining it to others or learning valuable new decision-making skills, then the OM major is for you.

Undergraduate laboratory experiences give students the chance to practice skills they learn in classes on real devices and to see firsthand the physics that they describe mathematically in classes. Because of our lab courses, upon graduation our students not only understand the technical world but also have the skills and experience to change it. Our electrical engineering students, faculty, and alumni have helped launch a multitude of entrepreneurial success stories over the years. They continue to change the world with their spirit of innovation, passion for technology, and technology transfer.

Electrical engineering students at UD benefit from a broad array of experiential learning opportunities, including robust senior design and undergraduate research programs, as well as our Vertically Integrated Projects program, which unites undergraduate education and faculty research in a team-based context. Many of our undergraduates publish papers in scholarly journals or attend conferences all over the country before receiving their degree.

The secondary history education program produces middle and high school teachers who are dedicated to transforming the lives of future generations through teaching social studies. Our graduates are committed to helping adolescents become informed, engaged and caring citizens, knowing that these same students will be the history makers of tomorrow. Physiology is the study of how living organisms function under normal conditions and is a foundational component of many careers in the health sciences. The BS in Human Physiology is intended for undergraduate students interested in careers in medicine, biomedical research, industry or other allied health professions for which a comprehensive knowledge of human physiology is required. The curriculum includes core courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics along with extensive upper level courses in human anatomy and physiology. The major is particularly suited for those who plan to continue their studies at the post-baccalaureate level through graduate or professional training. By selecting from a list of recommended electives, students can easily achieve all of the necessary prerequisite requirements for admission into medical and dental schools and be prepared to take the applicable entrance exams. Alternatively, those interested in other careers within the health sciences can choose among a broader list of electives that further enhance their understanding of human health and disease. The curriculum is intentionally demanding with the goal of providing the next generation of leaders in the health sciences with foundational knowledge in human physiological function at the molecular, cellular and organism level.
