Chemistry involves the study of solids, liquids and gases; and the transformations they undergo in combination with each other. Chemists engage in observation, analysis, and experimentation, breaking natural substances down into their components, replicating in the laboratory chemical processes that occur in the physical world and creating substances to fulfill specific needs. Chemical discoveries play an important role in helping us understand the world around us. Biochemistry, the study of chemical compounds and processes that occur in living organisms, has emerged as a field with growing impact on our ability to diagnose and treat diseases in animals, plants and humans.

By studying geological sciences, you will study the planet, the processes that change our landscapes, the history of life and the interactions between environment and society. You will gain the practical and in-demand skills to collect scientific data, inform policy decisions and study the environmental impacts of things like fracking, oil and natural gas extraction, renewable resources, climate change, and more.  Geological sciences graduates are in high demand with starting salaries ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 annually.

The Nutrition and Medical Sciences major provides students with a strong science foundation focused in biology, physiology, and chemistry, and is particularly designed for those expecting to pursue an advanced degree in graduate school, medical school, dental school, or other health-related professions (e.g. physician assistant, pharmacy, physical therapy). The core sciences paired with nutrition courses build knowledge about the relationships between biological and chemical processes, nutrition, metabolism and health.

From its inception just a half century ago, computing has become the defining technology of our age. Computers are integral to modern culture and are the primary engine behind much of the world’s economic growth. Moreover, the field continues to evolve at an astonishing pace, making computer science a vibrant discipline.

UD’s computer science curriculum emphasizes software development and computer theory with the goal that students learn how computers are used to solve real-life problems. Students develop excellent programming skills as they build a solid foundation in the theory and practice of computer science and software engineering. The research of the faculty guides upper-level course offerings, and there are ample opportunities for undergraduates to participate in research projects. Students are encouraged to explore how other subject areas impact and are impacted by computer science through a concentration in a related discipline.

We are committed to providing students with access to the most advanced computer technology available and maintaining research laboratories for areas requiring extensive experimental studies. Students also have access to our high-performance clusters for coursework and research in parallel computing, networking, artificial intelligence, and multimedia.

Health Behavior Science is the study of how individual (e.g., race, age, disability, knowledge), social (e.g., peer-groups), and environmental (e.g., access to parks, worksite wellness programs) factors shape our health and well-being across the lifespan. We work to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce the burden of disease through the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion programs to change specific health behaviors for individuals and/or target populations. Students are also required to complete a minor in an approved area of expertise or complete the Health and Disability concentration to provide additional focused skills that enhance their job competitiveness. Students pursuing this major are well prepared for careers in health promotion and education, community health, worksite wellness, health coaching, personal training, and advanced graduate programs including health promotion/public health, physical/occupational therapy, physician assistant, and accelerated nursing programs. The program culminates with an internship experience that enhances the school to work transition.

The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Political Science is designed for students who wish to combine advanced study of the Spanish language with a comprehensive background in Political Science and International Relations. The Spanish coursework included in the Spanish and History major will enable students to communicate with people of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and foster understanding between cultures in our global society. The required coursework in Political Science exposes students to the theories, institutions and processes of political systems and their functions within complex societies. The combination of these two areas allows students to enhance their skills and gain a more worldly perspective by studying both the language and political relations of the Spanish-speaking world.

The sport management major is designed to prepare you for a successful career in the multi-billion dollar sport industry.

As a sport management major, you’ll take courses that are specific to the sport management discipline, as well as business courses that will help you to develop quantitative analysis skills and an understanding of essential business concepts.

As a sport management graduate, you’ll find diverse and exciting career opportunities. These include careers in professional and minor league sports, intercollegiate and high school athletics, international and national sport governing bodies, sport agencies, sport facilities, businesses that use sports to market their products and sport marketing and event management firms.

• The Lerner College sport management program will help you to go above and beyond your passion for sport by challenging you academically and providing you with practical experience outside the classroom. As part of this experience, you’ll complete a nine-credit internship during your senior year.

Volunteering

• As a Lerner College sport management student, you will have access to a number of volunteer opportunities with the UD Athletic Department and other sport organizations in the area. Our goal is for you to gain as much practical experience as possible while developing professional networks within the sport industry.

Students pursuing the B.S. in Mathematics acquire depth in several key areas of mathematics, suitable as preparation for graduate study as well as immediate technically-oriented careers in business and government. Students interested in acquiring breadth in the liberal arts and less depth in mathematics can pursue the B.A. in Mathematics. Training in mathematics develops analytical and problem-solving skills that can be widely applied, and students with a degree in Mathematics frequently find rewarding careers that do not use the word “mathematician” in the job title.

Humankind’s cultural inheritance is encoded in the language of art. We offer students critical insights into this inheritance and the ways that art and cultural expression have developed over time and across the continents, deepening their knowledge of the past and the ways that the past shapes the present. We sharpen students’ visual skills, essential for success in an increasingly visual world. We develop students’ writing abilities, an essential foundation for any career. We spark students’ imaginations with images and objects that have endured centuries and have been worshipped or violated, stirred revolution or gone missing, delighted or outraged. In keeping with the university’s global mission, we offer courses in American (including Native American, African American and Latin American), European, African, Asian and Islamic art and architecture. Through the study of the full range of artistic creativity, we challenge students to become citizens of the world.

The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Applied Music is for students intent on a career as a professional musician or music professor within higher education. The applied music degree track is designed to develop the highest level of musicianship on a primary instrument and to promote both scholarship and professionalism in the field. The B.M. in Applied Music is available to those students accepted to the appropriate studio by audition on a primary instrument (woodwind, brass, strings, percussion, piano, classical guitar, harp or voice).

Coursework for this major includes rigorous core sequences of music theory, aural skills, history, piano and private study courses, as well as upper-level theory electives such as contrapuntal writing, keyboard harmony, jazz theory and topic seminars. Additionally, applied music students learn music repertoire through advanced music literature courses and ensemble participation. Performance opportunities are available through large ensembles, fully-staged opera productions, chamber music programs, annual competitions, summer festivals and recitals.
