As a meteorology and climate science major, you will learn how to answer questions about weather and climate that are increasingly relevant and important to all of us. Will a hurricane change course and make landfall over a coastal city? How much snow will the Northeast get this winter? What do sea surface temperatures tell us about climate change?  

You will receive training in meteorology, the science of the atmosphere, that will help you understand and address events is felt throughout various sectors of society—droughts resulting in water shortages, crop damage and increased wildfire potential, or water surpluses causing flooding. You will also study the climate, which is usually considered to be an average of weather conditions over a long period of time, along with understanding the variability of climate and its extreme events. Your studies in this area will include land-ocean-atmosphere interactions, as well as the role of the sun and astronomical forces. The skills you develop in weather and climate prediction are important skills used in the agricultural, tourism, disaster management, resource management, communication and renewable energy industries.

Sustainable Food Systems will train you to approach key food system challenges critically and innovatively — from agriculture and production, processing, retail consumption and waste. Sustainable food businesses, nonprofits and policymakers need more thinkers, strategists, planners and activists to help lead the population in utilizing, yet preserving our precious natural resources.

Food and fiber industries constitute approximately 16 percent of the U.S. economy with a value of over $2.5 trillion and 20 million jobs. The production of food is only a small part of this total, with most of the effort, resources and jobs involved in creating and marketing products to consumers. The Food and Agribusiness Marketing and Management major focuses on the unique aspects of these industries, including food marketing, management and leadership, and entrepreneurship. Not only will you obtain a strong background in business principles, you will graduate with the knowledge of how the agribusiness sector operates and impacts domestic and world economies. The job market is hungry for students well trained in business but who also understand the unique nature and dynamics of the food and fiber industry. ?The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a program in Actuarial Science leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. The major, with courses taught by faculty in the Departments of Economics, Finance, and Mathematical Sciences (among others), provides a strong background in actuarial science, including the satisfaction of all three actuarial science VEE requirements. Students graduating with this degree will be well prepared for the first two actuarial examinations, the foundation of an actuarial career.

From its inception just a half century ago, computing has become the defining technology of our age. Computers are integral to modern culture and are the primary engine behind much of the world’s economic growth. Moreover, the field continues to evolve at an astonishing pace, making computer science a vibrant discipline.

UD’s computer science curriculum emphasizes software development and computer theory with the goal that students learn how computers are used to solve real-life problems. Students develop excellent programming skills as they build a solid foundation in the theory and practice of computer science and software engineering. The research of the faculty guides upper-level course offerings, and there are ample opportunities for undergraduates to participate in research projects. Students are encouraged to explore how other subject areas impact and are impacted by computer science through a concentration in a related discipline.

If you want to help children understand the world around them, there is no better subject to teach than geography. Sharing the beauty and science of our natural landscapes and fascinating details about the diverse cultures around the globe, you can awaken children’s wonder and excitement for the world around them, helping them become engaged global citizens who care about our Earth. During your studies at UD, you will examine the physical properties of the natural environment (water, climate, landforms and vegetation) and the role that human beliefs, activities and decision-making has in shaping the world around us. You will also gain training in teaching and how to best reach and serve students in middle or high school.

Environmental and Resource Economics applies economic principles to the many and varied environmental and natural resource challenges facing our society today and in the future. In this major, you will study how human decisions impact our environment and natural resources, including issues involving land use, water supply, water quality, air quality, agriculture, fisheries, and forestry. Do you have an interest in environmental and resource management, economic analysis, or weighing the costs and benefits of alternative environmental policies? We will provide you with a solid foundation in resource economics, business and the environment, topped with a range of data and analytical specialties.

Physiology is the study of how living organisms function under normal conditions and is a foundational component of many careers in the health sciences. The BS in Human Physiology is intended for undergraduate students interested in careers in medicine, biomedical research, industry or other allied health professions for which a comprehensive knowledge of human physiology is required. The curriculum includes core courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics along with extensive upper level courses in human anatomy and physiology. The major is particularly suited for those who plan to continue their studies at the post-baccalaureate level through graduate or professional training. By selecting from a list of recommended electives, students can easily achieve all of the necessary prerequisite requirements for admission into medical and dental schools and be prepared to take the applicable entrance exams. Alternatively, those interested in other careers within the health sciences can choose among a broader list of electives that further enhance their understanding of human health and disease. The curriculum is intentionally demanding with the goal of providing the next generation of leaders in the health sciences with foundational knowledge in human physiological function at the molecular, cellular and organism level.

The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Political Science is designed for students who wish to combine advanced study of the Spanish language with a comprehensive background in Political Science and International Relations. The Spanish coursework included in the Spanish and History major will enable students to communicate with people of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and foster understanding between cultures in our global society. The required coursework in Political Science exposes students to the theories, institutions and processes of political systems and their functions within complex societies. The combination of these two areas allows students to enhance their skills and gain a more worldly perspective by studying both the language and political relations of the Spanish-speaking world.

The marketing major prepares you to serve a vital role as the liaison between businesses and consumers.

As a marketer, you will identify wants and needs among diverse groups of people, select target markets and develop strategies for new and existing products. You will formulate plans for pricing, distributing and promoting these products and services while utilizing knowledge of branding, advertising, social media and new product development. This work requires careful analysis, creativity and action to tailor products and services to meet consumers’ needs.
