Environmental engineering applies scientific principles and engineering tools to improve the natural environment, address pollution problems, and ensure environmental sustainability. Environmental engineers provide safe drinking water, treat and dispose of hazardous wastes, clean up contaminated soil and groundwater, and maintain the quality of air, water, and land resources.

Air pollution: Environmental engineers design chemical and mechanical means of preventing pollutants from being discharged into the atmosphere.

Hazardous waste: From chemical neutralization to genetically engineered “waste-eating” bacteria, environmental engineers devise better ways to clean up hazardous wastes.

Industrial hygiene: Engineers specializing in industrial hygiene help design efficient industrial and manufacturing processes that minimize waste and hazardous by-products.

Water resources: Measuring and modeling stream flow, designing systems to collect and treat stormwater, and predicting the impact of increased rainfall intensity on water conveyance systems are activities that ensure the quality of municipal water supplies and natural water systems.

Solid waste management: Environmental engineers lead the way in solid waste management, from designing landfills that won’t contaminate soil or groundwater, to reducing the amount of trash through better recycling processes, to understanding how various materials biodegrade.

Wastewater: Treating sewage and other wastewater is vitally important, not only for aquatic habitats but for human health as well. Engineers design facilities and processes to minimize the environmental impact of wastewater treatment.

Chemistry involves the study of solids, liquids, and gases and the transformations they undergo in combination with each other. Chemists engage in observation, analysis and experimentation. They break natural substances down into their components, replicate in the laboratory chemical processes that occur in the physical world and create substances to fulfill specific needs. Chemical discoveries play an important role in helping us understand the world around us. Biochemistry, the study of chemical compounds and processes that occur in living organisms, has emerged as a field with growing impact on our ability to diagnose and treat diseases in animals, plants and humans.

The secondary history education program produces middle and high school teachers who are dedicated to transforming the lives of future generations through teaching social studies. Our graduates are committed to helping adolescents become informed, engaged and caring citizens, knowing that these same students will be the history makers of tomorrow. Our goal is to inspire our future educators to teach passionately and knowledgeably so that all students are included in the mosaic of the past, present and future. This commitment, combined with rigorous program standards, enables our graduates to secure teaching jobs throughout the Eastern Seaboard, the nation and abroad.

Plato coined the word 'philosopher' to refer to a 'lover of wisdom'. As a discipline, philosophy seeks to understand the world and our relation to it by examining and scrutinizing the foundational assumptions that lie behind our everyday thinking. Philosophy asks big questions: What fundamentally exists? Are there any moral truths? Is free will possible? Can machines think? What is a scientific law? Which forms of government are best? Is there a God? But perhaps more than any specific set of questions or ideas, philosophy is about the love of critical and creative thinking, intelligent discussion and cogent argument. Since these skills are vital in every field, philosophical tools and training can be useful for students of virtually any subject. Students with a special interest in legal careers have the option of selecting the department’s philosophy and law concentration. Philosophy majors tend to score highest on the GRE, MCAT and LSAT exams, and many have gone on to successful careers in a variety of fields.

Neuroscience is a rapidly growing field that draws from multiple disciplines, including biology, psychology, physics, chemistry, medicine, mathematics, engineering and beyond, with the nervous system and its functions serving as the common focus. From molecules to mental activity, our undergraduate students learn about the structure, function, biochemistry, pharmacology, evolution, development, genetics, circuitry, excitable properties and pathology of the human and animal nervous systems. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of neuroscience, our major prepares students for a variety of research, medical, health, pharmaceutical and human services careers.

Construction engineers lead the most dynamic phase of civil and environmental engineering projects, from procurement to construction of the physical facility. There has never been a more exciting time to be involved in this field.

Technologies such as building information modeling, virtual reality, and visualization are revolutionizing the industry by providing construction engineers with unprecedented insight into the building process. Facilities can be virtually constructed before ground is broken to help identify potential problems, refine construction techniques, ensure safe and productive job sites, and facilitate success. New processes employing techniques from integrated manufacturing reduce waste and facilitate sequencing of activities through integrated project delivery, while new materials and methods promise to change the way business is done in the future.

We provide our students with the engineering foundation essential for professional licensure, valuable experience through co-op requirements, and formalized training in business essentials through an integrated business certificate program. Together, these elements prepare our students for leadership and success in the construction industry.

The English major offers a practical, multidisciplinary, and flexible array of courses that prepare students for a variety of career paths, including business, law, government, science, the arts, healthcare, education, and multi-media production. Our students learn to write clearly, to speak persuasively, and to read with care and precision, all qualities required for the leadership roles of many professions.

Chemical engineering deals with the physical, chemical and biological transformations of matter — engineering on the molecular scale. With its emphasis on problem-solving skills, quantitative analysis and teamwork, a chemical engineering education provides an excellent foundation for a wide range of fulfilling future careers. As a management information systems (MIS) major, you will learn to use information technology to solve business problems and find creative competitive advantages. Peer Mentors

• The peer mentors are accounting and MIS students that serve as liaisons between the department and the students. Peer mentors give guidance to students on topics ranging from major/minor selection and campus organizations to the job search process. You can contact them with a quick question or to develop a long-term mentor/mentee relationship – they are here to make sure you get everything you can out of your college experience.

The Bachelor of Music in Music History and Literature provides a rigorous core of courses in the history and literature of Western music and offers opportunities for deeper study in related fields such as music theory, literature, anthropology, philosophy, history and foreign languages. The degree culminates with an extended senior thesis under the mentorship of a member of the music history faculty. This degree is aimed primarily at students preparing to attend graduate school in musicology, although it might be of interest to students who are planning a career in a non-teaching, non-performing area of music such as ensemble management and representation, information sciences or educational media.

Opportunities are available for supported summer research and independent study. Also available to our students is the opportunity for exploration of the school’s extensive collection of period instruments in our Early Music Ensembles, which gives students a chance to perform music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance and Baroque Eras.
