Public policy decisions are the means by which communities address challenges such as health, education, housing, energy, poverty, economic growth and environmental sustainability. Public policies are the choices made by societies that drive public investments, create laws and regulations, establish services and security, guide markets and businesses or allocate benefits and costs to citizens. Public policy draws from many disciplines, including political science, law, economics, sociology, history, urban studies, geography and environmental studies. Policy choices shape the future of communities and change the world.

Health Behavior Science is the study of how individual (e.g., race, age, disability, knowledge), social (e.g., peer-groups), and environmental (e.g., access to parks, worksite wellness programs) factors shape our health and well-being across the lifespan. We work to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce the burden of disease through the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion programs to change specific health behaviors for individuals and/or target populations. Students are also required to complete a minor in an approved area of expertise or complete the Health and Disability concentration to provide additional focused skills that enhance their job competitiveness. Students pursuing this major are well prepared for careers in health promotion and education, community health, worksite wellness, health coaching, personal training, and advanced graduate programs including health promotion/public health, physical/occupational therapy, physician assistant, and accelerated nursing programs. The program culminates with an internship experience that enhances the school to work transition.

Physicists investigate the fundamental properties of our physical world and develop a quantitative understanding of its phenomena with the scale of the investigations ranging from the sub-atomic to the transgalactic. Physics and astronomy have had a profound impact on how we perceive the universe and our position in it. The Secondary Science Education major at the University of Delaware offers students interested in teaching middle or high school science the opportunity to study their scientific area of interest—like physics—while also learning about and practicing the best teaching methods.

Chances are that if you love science, there was a teacher or mentor who inspired or encouraged that passion. And if you want to spark that excitement in others, studying earth science education is the way to start. Earth science educators are critically important to teach young people to respect and conserve the planet’s resources and to maintain and preserve a healthy, livable environment.

In the earth science education program, you will be prepared for a future as a high school science teacher. The program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and emphasizes giving you a strong background in both liberal arts and content. You will complete all your field experiences and student teaching at one of Delaware’s fastest growing school districts during your sophomore, junior, and senior years, culminating with a 15-week student teaching practicum. On completing the program requirements, you will receive the University of Delaware's endorsement for teaching certification.

There is a global need for professionals trained to provide critical social services to children, adults and families from diverse backgrounds—counseling, educating, coordinating and advocating for people.

Human Services (HS) majors develop the skills necessary to make a difference in the lives of children, adolescents, adults and families. Choosing from one of four concentrations, students can prepare to work in a variety of settings including non-profit organizations, schools, hospitals, community programs, legal aid and advocacy organizations, where they can have a positive impact in fields such as youth development, disabilities, race relations, juvenile justice, substance abuse prevention and domestic violence prevention.

Entrepreneurship is the driving force for innovation and growth in the global economy, and UD’s educational and research programs in electrical engineering provide numerous opportunities to explore this force underlying the competitiveness, success, and prosperity of society.

Undergraduate laboratory experiences give students the chance to practice skills they learn in classes on real devices and to see firsthand the physics that they describe mathematically in classes. Because of our lab courses, upon graduation our students not only understand the technical world but also have the skills and experience to change it. Our electrical engineering students, faculty, and alumni have helped launch a multitude of entrepreneurial success stories over the years. They continue to change the world with their spirit of innovation, passion for technology, and technology transfer.

Electrical engineering students at UD benefit from a broad array of experiential learning opportunities, including robust senior design and undergraduate research programs, as well as our Vertically Integrated Projects program, which unites undergraduate education and faculty research in a team-based context. Many of our undergraduates publish papers in scholarly journals or attend conferences all over the country before receiving their degree.

History majors at the University of Delaware explore the past while acquiring skills to shape the future. Our language classes cover all social situations from informal to formal occasions with solid training in honorifics and skills for both academic and business presentations. Join the many students who have already decided to make what is certainly one of the world’s most interesting languages a part of their undergraduate experience as a Japanese studies major.

Study in Kobe, Tokyo, Fukuoka or Akita – four very different parts of the country with diverse experiences to offer. Join one of our dynamic student clubs to share your interests with others, whether it be martial arts, language study with native speakers or a deeper engagement with the Japanese art forms of manga, anime and videogames. Our Japanese studies program allows you to specialize in film, literature or pop culture while advancing your language skills and learning more about current events. You will graduate with a firm grasp of what life in Japan is really like and how Japanese culture makes an impact on our world every day.

You always hear students say, “Oh, Russian? No way! That’s too hard!” But it’s easier than you think! The alphabet looks daunting, but is easily conquerable. And we only have three verb tenses. What better news is there than that? And when you visit Russia you'll find that the warm, generous people will love you even if you only know a little bit of their language.

Students of the UD Russian Studies Program will not only work with the beautiful language but will also have the opportunity through a variety of courses to learn about this unique, fascinating culture and its long history. They do this through Russia's world-renowned literature and through other media such as film, the Internet, political essays and the arts. A working knowledge of Russian can help you in countless fields from government service, politics, economics, international business, the fuel industries, art history and even music, dance, ice skating and hockey.

In addition, the major gives you flexibility because you can focus on the area of management that’s most relevant to your career goals. You can choose between Business Leadership and Human Resources.

• The Business Leadership track includes courses that focus on leading change in businesses and understanding different approaches to leadership and team dynamics.
