Have you ever considered how governments solve complex problems in areas like immigration, healthcare or environmental protection? Through political science you will learn about national and international politics and policymakers. You will also learn valuable skills in critical thought, oral and written communication and quantitative reasoning—the very skills most useful to employers in fields like law, business and journalism, not just politics.

All majors are required to complete three core courses: Introduction to American Politics, Introduction to Global Politics and Research Methods for Political Science. Beyond the core courses, you may choose to major in political science without a concentration or to specialize in one of three concentrations: American politics, global politics or public law. Political science is a flexible major that can complement your many other interests, a second major or minors and prepare you to engage an increasingly complex world.

Psychology is the study of the basic processes of the mind and the brain and the behavior they produce. Our undergraduates learn about basic principles of human and animal behavior, the scientific methods used to derive and refine those principles and appropriate ways to apply such knowledge.

The secondary social studies education program comprises of seven different majors: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. We produce middle and high school teachers who are dedicated to transforming the lives of future generations through teaching social studies. Our graduates are committed to helping adolescents become informed, engaged and caring citizens, knowing that these same students will be the history makers of tomorrow. Our goal is to inspire our future educators to teach passionately and knowledgeably so that all students are included in the mosaic of the past, present and future. This commitment, combined with rigorous program standards, enable our graduates to secure teaching jobs throughout the Eastern Seaboard, the nation and abroad.

Sociology is the study of social organizations, social change and the social causes and consequences of human behavior in the modern world. The Sociology Education degree offers a liberal arts curriculum that integrates teaching theory and methods with courses focusing on contemporary social issues and problems. Students working toward teaching certification in the social sciences will be able to augment their training in pedagogy with sociological content emphasizing inequality, social justice, law and society, deviance and criminology, social correlates of health and wellbeing and disasters and the environment.

As a hospitality industry management (HSIM) student, you will develop the analytical skills to prepare you for careers in hospitality consulting and in the corporate office.

The HSIM program is a business degree with a hospitality emphasis. You can customize this major to fit your interests. Along with your advisor, you’ll choose a focus area such as revenue management, resort real estate development, hospitality e-commerce or tourism sustainability, so that you can specialize in a particular area of hospitality, one of the world’s largest industries.

Practical Experience

• Nothing complements classroom-based learning like practical, on-the-job learning. Two integral parts of the HSIM curriculum are the 400 hours of hospitality-related work experience. Hospitality student organizations take students to national industry conferences and provide networking opportunities with leaders and managers in the hospitality field.

Industry Experience

• All classes are taught by faculty with real industry experience and academic credentials. And through the Blue Hen Alumni Network and events like the Hospitality Career Fair and the Paul Wise Executive in Residence Speaker Series, industry alumni, leaders and managers frequently visit campus to meet, mentor and hire our students. The student clubs take our students to national industry conferences, providing networking opportunities with leaders and managers in the hospitality field.

From the most recent advances in plant molecular biology to the latest methods for growing and maintaining healthy plants, students in the Plant Science major will incorporate these practices with their evolving knowledge of the plant kingdom. The major offers the flexibility to pursue the areas of plant science that best aligns students with their future goals. Exciting careers in sustainable agriculture and ecosystem sciences, agronomic and horticultural crop production systems, plant science research and biotechnology, and crop protection await you.

We offer an interdisciplinary major with the same name as our college. There has never been a more immediate and pressing need for agriculture and natural resource professionals than now. The field of agriculture and natural resources needs generalists to educate others, and address real-world problems of feeding the world and protecting the planet. With a working farm right on main campus, students have unparalleled access to a 350-acre classroom, where they gain practical experience by actively testing their knowledge in real-world settings. Students regularly engage with faculty from each of the college’s departments for hands-on experiences, research opportunities and connections to communities.

The Bachelor of Music in Composition emphasizes instruction in musical composition, improvisation and multimedia creative activities. Many students in this major continue on to graduate studies in composition at well-known institutions with the goal of working in higher education or to compose vocationally.

The Composition Studio is a vibrant and highly active group within the University of Delaware’s School of Music. Composition students remain active as performers and are able to participate in all of the school’s ensembles and productions. Diversity in compositional style and philosophy is encouraged, as is interdisciplinary collaboration and experimentation. Close association with the theory and musicology areas, in addition to the performance area, provides for a well-rounded academic education where music composition students can enhance and support their creative work with specialized research and performance.

What better news is there than that? And when you visit Russia you'll find that the warm, generous people will love you even if you only know a little bit of their language.

Students of the UD Russian Studies Program will not only work with the beautiful language but will also have the opportunity through a variety of courses to learn about this unique, fascinating culture and its long history. They do this through Russia's world-renowned literature and through other media such as film, the Internet, political essays and the arts. A working knowledge of Russian can help you in countless fields from government service, politics, economics, international business, the fuel industries, art history and even music, dance, ice skating and hockey.

Chemical engineering deals with the physical, chemical and biological transformations of matter — engineering on the molecular scale. With its emphasis on problem-solving skills, quantitative analysis and teamwork, a chemical engineering education provides an excellent foundation for a wide range of fulfilling future careers. Graduates of our program are in strong demand and hired by a broad array of employers, including companies in the energy, biotechnology, semiconductor, management, consulting, and pharmaceutical industries, in addition to a variety of small start-up companies and the chemical process industry. Graduates also pursue careers in medicine, law and business.

THE POWER OF GEOSPATIAL DATA

To contribute to advances in sustainability and fostering a more equitable society in the future, you will need to learn how to analyze and harness geosptatial data, which is already being generated in every aspect of our society. In this major you will study computer science, electrical engineering, geography and mathematics in a core curriculum that builds strong skills in handling large geospatial and environmental data sets. Having built those foundational skills, you will then develop the deep knowledge and context you will need to succeed in one of five topical concentrations, listed below in Areas of Study. In the capstone course, you will apply data analytics to pressing environmental topics, such as food security, water shortages, climate change and environmental health.
