Sociology is the study of social organizations, social change and the social causes and consequences of human behavior in the modern world. The Sociology Education degree offers a liberal arts curriculum that integrates teaching theory and methods with courses focusing on contemporary social issues and problems. Students working toward teaching certification in the social sciences will be able to augment their training in pedagogy with sociological content emphasizing inequality, social justice, law and society, deviance and criminology, social correlates of health and wellbeing and disasters and the environment.

Our graduates choose a variety of career paths: Some become import/export broker, assisting with marketing activities, other serves as policy analyst, researching and analyzing information to assist in policy planning. Some become teachers, translators, or interpreters; some are employed in government, international travel, or financial services; others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy, and college teaching. Opportunities in international marketing, advertising, and other communications industries provide further outlets for language skills, coupled with other expertise acquired in joint or double majors.

Be part of solving one of humanity’s most critical grand challenges — the global demand for food and fiber.  With the population expected to grow by 2.3 billion by 2050, feeding the world will require raising overall food production by 70 percent.  You will become knowledgeable in animal nutrition, health, behavior, reproduction, physiology, genetics and animal management. You will play an important role in education and the conservation of non-domesticated animals housed in zoos, aquariums and sanctuaries. You will also contribute to a greater understanding of the complex relationships between domestic animals (livestock and pets), wild animals, humans and our shared environment.

The English major offers a practical, multidisciplinary, and flexible array of courses that prepare students for a variety of career paths, including business, law, government, science, the arts, healthcare, education, and multi-media production. Our students learn to write clearly, to speak persuasively, and to read with care and precision, all qualities required for the leadership roles of many professions.

Psychology is the study of the basic processes of the mind and the brain, and the behavior they produce. Because psychology is a hub science, the scientific contributions of psychological research apply many other fields such as law, medicine and engineering. Our undergraduates learn about basic principles of human and animal behavior, the scientific methods used to derive and refine those principles and appropriate ways to apply such knowledge. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of psychology, our major prepares students with transferrable skills applicable to a wide variety of careers.

What does a French Major study?  Of course, you will acquire the skills needed to effectively communicate with French and Francophone speakers. But what will you communicate? Our department offers engaging courses in French and Francophone literature, culture, civilization, theater, business and cinema. Plus, study abroad for the opportunity to take courses in politics, art, economics, fashion, photography, tourism and gastronomy. Your study will prepare you to compete and succeed in a wide variety of professions while using the language of over 200 million people on five continents.

Earn either a bachelor of science (B.S.) or a bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree in economics depending on your strengths in mathematics and quantitative skills (B.S.) or foreign language (B.A.).

Medical diagnostics is a clinical-oriented science program that incorporates the basic science courses required for admission to medical school with medical-related courses that impact on the diagnosis and therapy of disease. This major prepares students who plan to pursue postgraduate study in health-related areas immediately upon graduation, including careers in medicine, dentistry, optometry, and physician assistant.

Students with the goal of attending Medical School should visit UD's Pre-Med website for advising and admission information. There are two distinct pathways by which students can gain admission to a professional school. One is open to all majors and requires a basic knowledge of science and mathematics. Students taking this option are evaluated by the Health Science Advisement and Evaluation Committee (HSAEC), which writes a University of Delaware recommendation to medical institutions of the student's choice.

Freshmen enter as medical laboratory and diagnostics interest majors. In order to enter the medical diagnostics major at the end of the sophomore year certain criteria are required: a minimum 3.00 GPA for the first four semesters, including successful completion of prerequisite courses in chemistry, biological sciences, physics and/or anatomy and physiology, and completion of at least 60 credit hours, including the prerequisite courses. Admission to the junior/senior major is determined by academic achievement.

Earth science educators are critically important to teach young people to respect and conserve the planet’s resources and to maintain and preserve a healthy, livable environment.

In the earth science education program, you will be prepared for a future as a high school science teacher. The program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and emphasizes giving you a strong background in both liberal arts and content. You will complete all your field experiences and student teaching at one of Delaware’s fastest growing school districts during your sophomore, junior, and senior years, culminating with a 15-week student teaching practicum. On completing the program requirements, you will receive the University of Delaware's endorsement for teaching certification.
