Be part of solving one of humanity’s most critical grand challenges — the global demand for food and fiber.  With the population expected to grow by 2.3 billion by 2050, feeding the world will require raising overall food production by 70 percent.  You will become knowledgeable in animal nutrition, health, behavior, reproduction, physiology, genetics and animal management. You will play an important role in education and the conservation of non-domesticated animals housed in zoos, aquariums and sanctuaries. You will also contribute to a greater understanding of the complex relationships between domestic animals (livestock and pets), wild animals, humans and our shared environment.

The ability to use a foreign language and to employ knowledge about another culture is highly valued by the business and professional communities. Multilingualism and intercultural competence are essential credentials for leadership today in diverse fields. Our graduates choose a variety of career paths: Some become teachers, translators, or interpreters; others are employed in publishing, broadcasting, government, international travel, financial services, or other areas of international business. Opportunities in international marketing, advertising, and other communications industries provide further outlets for language skills, coupled with other expertise acquired in joint or double majors. Some students enter careers with international organizations such as the United Nations, International Red Cross and the World Health Organization, while others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy, and college teaching.

Humankind’s cultural inheritance is encoded in the language of art. We offer students critical insights into this inheritance and the ways that art and cultural expression have developed over time and across the continents, deepening their knowledge of the past and the ways that the past shapes the present. We sharpen students’ visual skills, essential for success in an increasingly visual world. We develop students’ writing abilities, an essential foundation for any career. We spark students’ imaginations with images and objects that have endured centuries and have been worshipped or violated, stirred revolution or gone missing, delighted or outraged. In keeping with the university’s global mission, we offer courses in American (including Native American, African American and Latin American), European, African, Asian and Islamic art and architecture. Through the study of the full range of artistic creativity, we challenge students to become citizens of the world.

The Bachelor of Music in Music History and Literature provides a rigorous core of courses in the history and literature of Western music and offers opportunities for deeper study in related fields such as music theory, literature, anthropology, philosophy, history and foreign languages. The degree culminates with an extended senior thesis under the mentorship of a member of the music history faculty. This degree is aimed primarily at students preparing to attend graduate school in musicology, although it might be of interest to students who are planning a career in a non-teaching, non-performing area of music such as ensemble management and representation, information sciences or educational media.

Opportunities are available for supported summer research and independent study. Also available to our students is the opportunity for exploration of the school’s extensive collection of period instruments in our Early Music Ensembles, which gives students a chance to perform music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance and Baroque Eras.

Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of the mind as an information processor. It is a relatively new discipline that arose in the mid-20th century from a convergence of conceptual revolutions primarily in psychology, computer science and linguistics. Today, it also draws from fields such as philosophy, neuroscience and anthropology. A central goal of cognitive science is to determine structures and processes that underwrite cognitive tasks such as perception, memory, attention, language and motor control. This, in turn, plays an important role in applied research areas such as artificial intelligence, educational psychology, the science of language and communication.

Chemical engineering deals with the physical, chemical and biological transformations of matter — engineering on the molecular scale. With its emphasis on problem-solving skills, quantitative analysis and teamwork, a chemical engineering education provides an excellent foundation for a wide range of fulfilling future careers. Graduates of our program are in strong demand and hired by a broad array of employers, including companies in the energy, biotechnology, semiconductor, management, consulting, and pharmaceutical industries, in addition to a variety of small start-up companies and the chemical process industry. Graduates also pursue careers in medicine, law and business.

Anthropologists study us. We learn how and why people and their cultures are both similar and different over time and around the world. Anthropologists study people and primates face-to-face and we study past peoples by exploring fossils and digging archaeological sites. We examine the origins of humans as cultural beings; the processes that create particular cultures; and how cultures change as people, things, and ideas move and encounter others. In our globalized world, we ask how the local influences and shapes the regional, national and global, and in turn, how the global affects the local. Every career today requires understanding of other cultures, and how they influence our complicated, rapidly changing, interconnected human experience. There’s no limit to where you can go with that kind of understanding of our world and its peoples.

A strong background in finance will prepare you for a decision-making role in any organization. Why? Because success for any organization depends on its ability to make good decisions in critical areas, including:

In Lerner’s finance program, you will learn how to balance opportunity with risk to ensure resources are allocated to their best use. CFA Institute Recognition

• The undergraduate finance degree at the University of Delaware has been recognized by the CFA Institute as a program that incorporates over 75% of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Exam Material into its curriculum, including the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct. Student Organizations
The Blue Hen Investment Club is the University of Delaware’s student-managed investment fund with $1.8 million assets under management. It is open to students of all majors who are willing to commit to managing a portion of the university’s endowment.

Over the years, the fund has created leaders who have found careers with institutions such as Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, UBS, PwC, EY, KPMG and McKinsey & Company.

The Fine Arts Program at UD—one of three undergraduate art and design degrees offered at UD—combines the best of creative research and hands-on experimentation.  Students have the opportunity to experience printmaking, painting, ceramics, sculpture, video, photography, animation and drawing. After completing core courses, students have the freedom to choose their own pathway of study that enables them to develop into an active creative force; essentially our students are empowered to impact culture in a meaningful way and positively change the world.

Central to this student-centered approach is our one-on-one advising—all fine art majors and minors work in direct contact with our professionally active faculty through studio and lecture courses. Additionally, students engage with diverse communities through dynamic visiting artist talks, highly regarded study abroad courses, productive internships and frequent field trips to major art centers. Individual or shared studios are available for advanced students.
