If you want to help children understand the world around them, there is no better subject to teach than geography. Sharing the beauty and science of our natural landscapes and fascinating details about the diverse cultures around the globe, you can awaken children’s wonder and excitement for the world around them, helping them become engaged global citizens who care about our Earth. During your studies at UD, you will examine the physical properties of the natural environment (water, climate, landforms and vegetation) and the role that human beliefs, activities and decision-making has in shaping the world around us. You will also gain training in teaching and how to best reach and serve students in middle or high school.

Spanish is the second-most popular language in the world, spoken by more than 400 million people. A major in Spanish Studies enables students to communicate with people of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and helps foster understanding between cultures in our global society.

The ability to use a foreign language and to employ knowledge about another culture is highly valued by the business and professional communities, and multilingualism and intercultural competence are essential credentials for leadership today in diverse fields. Our graduates choose a variety of career paths: some become teachers, translators or interpreters; others are employed in publishing, broadcasting, government, international travel, financial services or other areas of international business. Coupled with other expertise acquired in joint or double majors, Spanish majors have opportunities in international marketing, advertising and other communications industries. Some students enter careers with international organizations such as the United Nations, International Red Cross or the World Health Organization, while others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy and college teaching.

For almost a century, the University of Delaware’s Physics and Astronomy program has provided a world class undergraduate physics education that meets the goals of STEM education. Our graduates join a variety of physical science and engineering graduate programs, enter medical school, find employment in industry and teach in high schools all over the country.

The School of Music offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music provides students an opportunity to synthesize intensive study of music with a liberal arts education applicable to a variety of career interests. The program includes training in music theory, music history/literature, performance ensembles and applied music. Rigorous coursework in music is balanced by significant opportunities for training, research and development in other academic areas. This program is particularly well suited to students with broad ranging artistic and academic interests, and who wish to utilize their music education to advance their careers in unique directions.

Communication offers a strong theory- and research-based program coupled with skills training in oral communication, video production, broadcast journalism and public relations. Students also study intercultural communication, principles in advertising, media and children, politics and entertainment, advertising, persuasion, strategic communication, social media management, relationship skills and conflict management. This well-rounded curriculum prepares our graduates for a successful and dynamic career.

Humankind’s cultural inheritance is encoded in the language of art. We offer students critical insights into this inheritance and the ways that art and cultural expression have developed over time and across the continents, deepening their knowledge of the past and the ways that the past shapes the present. We sharpen students’ visual skills, essential for success in an increasingly visual world. We develop students’ writing abilities, an essential foundation for any career. We spark students’ imaginations with images and objects that have endured centuries and have been worshipped or violated, stirred revolution or gone missing, delighted or outraged. In keeping with the university’s global mission, we offer courses in American (including Native American, African American and Latin American), European, African, Asian and Islamic art and architecture. Through the study of the full range of artistic creativity, we challenge students to become citizens of the world.

Medical laboratory science encompasses the essence of biology, chemistry, and medicine. It is associated with the prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of disease through the understanding, application, and performance of clinical laboratory analyses. Medical laboratory scientists perform laboratory tests on blood and other body fluids to aid in the maintenance of health and the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The medical laboratory science major prepares students for national certification as medical laboratory scientists through the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC).

Freshmen enter as medical laboratory and diagnostics interest majors. In order to enter the medical laboratory science major at the end of the sophomore year certain criteria are required: a minimum 2.00 GPA for the first 4 semesters, minimum 2.00 GPA for prerequisite courses in chemistry and biological sciences (science index), and completion of at least 60 credit hours, including the prerequisite courses. Admission to the junior/senior major is determined by academic achievement. Students who meet the standards are admitted to the major in descending order of grade point average until the 36 positions in the junior class are filled. In the past, all sophomores with both a 2.5 or better GPA and a 2.00 or better science index have been successful in gaining admission to the junior/senior major.

Psychology is the study of the basic processes of the mind and the brain, and the behavior they produce. Because psychology is a hub science, the scientific contributions of psychological research apply many other fields such as law, medicine and engineering. Our undergraduates learn about basic principles of human and animal behavior, the scientific methods used to derive and refine those principles and appropriate ways to apply such knowledge. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of psychology, our major prepares students with transferrable skills applicable to a wide variety of careers.

Sociology is the study of social organizations, social change and the social causes and consequences of human behavior in the modern world. The Sociology Education degree offers a liberal arts curriculum that integrates teaching theory and methods with courses focusing on contemporary social issues and problems. Students working toward teaching certification in the social sciences will be able to augment their training in pedagogy with sociological content emphasizing inequality, social justice, law and society, deviance and criminology, social correlates of health and wellbeing and disasters and the environment.

The B.S. in Applied Mathematics allows students to gain depth in mathematics as well as one of twenty-one areas of application in science and engineering such as Bioinformatics, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Physics and Statistics. This degree prepares students planning a career in a field requiring strength in mathematics as well as in an area of application. Students considering a double major in Mathematics and a related area are advised to consider this program.
