The Creative Writing concentration invites English majors to study literary artistry in small group workshop classes that emphasize style, technique, and other aspects of craft. Where most undergraduate programs staff creative writing classrooms with visiting lecturers or graduate students, UMass Lowell retains a permanent faculty of distinguished writers specializing in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Focused on reading widely and writing well, the concentration’s multi-genre, progressively rigorous course of study culminates in a capstone portfolio project.

Students can expect to take part in the English Department's vibrant and active literary and creative community. The campus literary magazine, The Offering, is entirely student-run and -edited, and many creative writing students work on the editorial team or publish work in the magazine. Students have access to any number of public literary events each semester, including student readings, and can meet and speak to award-winning, nationally recognized authors through our Writers on Campus series. Our program, like the other department concentrations, offers a degree in English, and provides a solid foundation for students hoping to pursue a writing life beyond the classroom. Graduates of our program have published work in prominent literary magazines, been accepted in top-ranked MFA programs, released books with major publishers, and won prestigious national awards.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell offers graduate programs leading to Master of Science (M.S.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. Our research is funded by the National Science Foundation, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Office of Naval Research and various companies, including Raytheon and Intel.

The UMass Lowell biology master's program fosters critical thinking and develops skills needed for independent laboratory study. This is accomplished, in part, by offering advanced lecture, seminar and laboratory courses.

The Department of Biological Sciences offers four options for the Master of Science in Biological Science:

• General Option offers flexibility so students can create a program that fits their educational and employment goals.
• Biotechnology Option focuses on training essential to employment in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.
• Bioinformatics Option prepares students for academic and industry positions by providing interdisciplinary coursework emphasizing computational analysis and interpretation of biological datasets.
• Education, Communication and Outreach Option offers tailored coursework to prepare graduates to effectively communicate biological and scientific concepts using evidence-based approaches in their desired career paths.

Business analytics is the process of transforming raw data into business intelligence and insight. As companies generate more data at ever faster rates, the need for business analytics professionals is growing. The Master of Science in Business Analytics program will help you:

• Develop the ability to collect, manage and analyze data from a variety of sources.
• Enhance your understanding of business processes and systems.
• Develop the ability to understand and communicate insights gleaned from descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics.

Private and public firms in fields as diverse as health care, finance, logistics and marketing need business analysts to help them identify and solve problems related to forecasting, customer relationship management and revenue optimization — to name only a few. Experts predict that in the next 10 years, hundreds of thousands of new jobs will be created in the domain of business analytics.

The Master of Arts degree in history educates students in the essential skills of analysis, comprehension, critical thinking and public speaking. It develops the ability to analyze large quantities of data, to identify patterns and trends and to write a clear narrative that explains those results. Such skills apply to a wide range of careers, including teaching, gallery and museum work; archive management; government and public service; business and legal research; and consulting.

The M.A. in history is designed for those who:

• Hold a teaching license and are seeking professional licensure;
• Work or want to work in history organizations, museums and galleries;
• Are preparing for doctoral studies in history or
• Seek the additional intellectual challenge of graduate work in history.

The Music Studies and Education programs at UMass Lowell are exciting, highly creative learning environments designed to help our students realize their full potential as teachers and leaders in their communities.

One of our primary objectives is to provide our music education students with the musical and pedagogical foundation and tools to create rich learning opportunities for their students to develop their creative potential and experience the world from multiple perspectives. Teachers must utilize all means necessary to create the kinds of learning environments that encourage students to take risks, be adventurous in their thinking and problem-solving, and unleash the imaginations they come into the world with.

We strive to create a learning environment in our programs that encourages active learning and engagement, one that models real-world activities. Since the application of knowledge involves ‘doing,’ our courses have been designed to maximize hands-on experiences, through problem solving activities, critical, creative and reflective thinking, in order to create a classroom environment supportive of the construction of knowledge, collaboration, and risk-taking. Our students work on a variety of projects both independently and collaboratively, involving research, creating, composing, improvising, and teaching mini-lessons. Since we feel it’s important to provide as many opportunities as possible for the students to interact with each other, as well as with the teacher, many of the projects and class activities are collaborative in nature, may involve technology and will support the active construction of knowledge. In many of these activities our students are asked to put themselves in the role of student creators allowing them to understand the teaching process from the learner’s perspective.

The curriculum provides a sound foundation in math, science, and engineering as well as plastics specific courses. These courses, and the related laboratory experiences, focus on polymer materials, properties, processing and design. All levels of this curriculum foster communication, professionalism, ethics, safety, and environmental sustainability.

The department maintains the highest standard of academic excellence and a supportive environment for students from all backgrounds.

Students follow a sequence of mathematics, science, college writing, and fundamental engineering courses in their freshman and sophomore years. Plastics Engineering courses begin with the freshman-level Introduction to Plastics Engineering. Basic plastics materials, processing and design - with their hands on laboratories - are taught in the sophomore and junior years. The senior year includes advanced courses and a student-selected capstone project. Relevant clusters of humanities and social science courses are included with the context of engineering education to create well-rounded graduates.

Mechanical engineers are problem solvers who help industries tackle important challenges such as developing new power and autonomous systems and advanced composite materials, as well as new methods of enhancing productivity and quality in manufacturing.

Students in the UMass Lowell mechanical engineering program learn how to apply fundamental principles with competence and sensitivity to meet the needs of industry and society. Our program emphasizes hands-on experience based in the design-build test methodology, in which students have the opportunity to build and test their theoretical designs. Accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (https://www.abet.org), the mechanical engineering program features award-winning researchers and dedicated academics committed to providing students with a high-quality, comprehensive education.

These courses explore authors and texts through the historically under-represented perspectives of race, ethnicity, gender, disability, post-coloniality, and sexuality. The concentration includes a capstone course that provides a culminating opportunity to complete a substantial learning project. Some capstones focus on in-depth, advanced study of a particular author or period; others encourage deep research into an individual area of interest or provide an internship experience.
