Homeland security and emergency management focuses on protecting the country and responding to – and recovering from – man-made and natural disasters. Our program is extraordinarily unique because it combines two important areas of study into one. This model is what employers are looking for.

We are cross-training students to provide you with a well-rounded picture of what is going on in the world today. We'll instill in you the skills to respond appropriately to these challenges and the ability to navigate complex issues. You can choose to focus your degree in either homeland security or emergency management, or complete both tracks.

In the homeland security track, you'll prepare for careers at the federal, state, or local level by:

• Exploring complex issues of immigration and border security
• Becoming knowledgeable about potential threats to the nation's critical infrastructure
• Studying transportation security and weapons of mass destruction
• Learning to respond to threats of terrorism

In the emergency management track, you will learn to manage and coordinate the multi-agency response to and recovery from man-made and natural disasters by:

• Mastering the tools and methods involved in emergency management
• Learning the principles of fire science technology
• Exploring concepts in hazard risk management, hazard mapping, and modeling

One of only a small number of such programs in the United States, our master’s program in fire and explosion investigation offers 39 credits* of interdisciplinary coursework in fire/arson investigation, emergency management, public safety, and more. Students in the program study alongside leading professionals in the fire service including current and former fire and police chiefs, homeland security executives, private investigators, and insurance agents. Successful alumni have moved on to leadership positions in local fire departments, state and federal emergency agencies, and private firms.

Students take required courses in topics such as the chemistry of fires, dynamics of structural fires, and arson analysis. Candidates will also chose from a series of electives that explores issues, including fire and building codes, fire scene reconstruction, terrorism, and industrial fire protection.

As a chemical engineer, you will transform matter or energy into forms that benefit human beings. You might design clean energy solutions, do research and development in pharmaceuticals, or create new ways to feed the world’s growing population.

The foundation you will build in chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics – and your collaborations involving engineering disciplines such as computer science, and mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering – will prepare you to rise to the challenges that face both the modern-day chemical engineer and the world. Those challenges — hallmarks of the early 21st century — include environmental integrity, limited resources, and human safety.

As a Chemical Engineering major at the University of New Haven, you will:

The University of New Haven’s B.S. in Business Analytics will provide you with the training to be this indispensable individual. Through the program, you will gain organizational and technical competencies in data science, learning to interpret data-asset data asset analysis for business applications and acquiring the skills to guide organizational decision-making. We will train you in a wide range of data analytics methods, while also giving you specialization opportunities in sport management, marketing analytics, or operations/supply chain strategy.

Speech-language pathologists assess, diagnose, treat and help prevent communication and swallowing problems in children and adults. Successful speech-language pathologists understand the scientific, social, and clinical aspects of communication and care for patients with disorders of articulation, language development, voice, swallowing, feeding and other issues. Graduates of these programs practice in a wide range of settings including:

• Schools and other educational settings
• Acute care hospitals
• Long-term care and rehabilitation facilities
• Clinics and doctors offices
• Federally qualified health centers (FQHCs)
• Skilled nursing facilities

A key aspect of our M.S. degree, as it can prepare you to enter the computer industry directly after graduation, or to continue your educational path to a Ph.D. A variety of electives allow you to customize your experience to suit your interests.

Make the Switch!
An additional feature of the program caters to those wishing to switch fields into the computer science realm. We have prepared a set of six bridge courses to help you transition from your previous background to a level of readiness that enables you to successfully pursue the rest of the degree program. Some of our best students began their journey in this manner and we encourage you to join them.

Before September 11, 2001, the job market for emergency management was already expanding quickly. The movement of populations into the "Sunshine States" and into risk-prone areas such as coastlines, floodplains, and forests made natural events such as hurricanes, wildfires, and tornadoes far more threatening and challenging to communities and businesses. After September 11, terrorism in all forms — including biological and chemical — became a crucial and inextricable part of emergency management.

A unique experience

Only the second such program in New England, the M.S. in Emergency Management program offers 36 credits of interdisciplinary coursework — delivered both online and on campus — that prepares students for successful roles in disaster mitigation and prevention. Students in the program complete eight required core courses covering topics in hazard mitigation, catastrophe readiness, disaster recovery, emergency incident management, and more. An additional four courses of electives are required for the degree, with the approval of the program advisor students may select courses from areas of study such as criminal justice, fire science, public administration, national security, or another area.

The University of New Haven offers one of the oldest graduate programs in community psychology in the country. For more than 40 years, we have successfully prepared graduates for professional careers in mental health and related human services fields.

We provide a distinctive applied psychology education. We offer three program concentrations – community-clinical services, program development, or forensic psychology – that enable our students to tailor the curriculum to meet their individual needs and professional goals.

You’ll learn to apply different psychological and social sciences theories and approaches to understand and impact the complex forces that influence individual and community behavior and well-being.

The program allows students to simultaneously complete their degree, obtain practical experience, work full-time or part-time, and meet financial obligations. Full-time students can complete the program in two years, and classes are offered during evening hours to accommodate working students.

You’ll prepare for the future by:

• Learning and training to prevent and treat psychological problems, with an emphasis on interventions within social institutions, organizations and groups, as well as directly with individuals
• Focusing on community analysis, consultation, program development, administration and evaluation
• Gaining internship experience at a human service organization or in a community setting
• Learning to apply your knowledge to enhance and enrich individuals, families, groups, institutions and entire communities
• Developing knowledge in counseling, psychotherapy, group, and family treatment; personality assessment; case management and client advocacy; crisis intervention, primary and secondary prevention; organizational consultation, program planning and development, agency and program administration, networking and interagency collaboration; research and evaluation; community development and social change

Medical laboratory scientists are educated to work in clinical chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, immunology, and microbiology with various sub-specialties in each of those major areas.

Laboratory analysis by medical laboratory scientists plays a critical role, along with that of the physician, in disease diagnosis, treatment, and health maintenance. Medical laboratory scientists are professionals who are prepared not only to produce laboratory data but also to assure the quality of those data, compare and select laboratory methods, advise other health care professionals on the validity of data, and supervise laboratory personnel

The 12-credit community development concentration provides students with additional skills focused on the administration of both traditional and non-traditional programs and services. The concentration addresses planning, development, and evaluation of innovative approaches to treatment and prevention in the public and private human service sectors as well as in business and industry.

Program Outcomes:

• Students will demonstrate competence in all 8 core domains of counseling, as well as the concentration of clinical mental health counseling.
• Students successfully synthesize major theoretical concepts in the core counseling curriculum and their concentration area with their practicum experience.
• Students demonstrate, at a professional level, applied intervention skills in the internship.

The program consists of 60 credits, 48 of which compose the core curriculum completed by all students, and 12 of which constitute one of three concentration areas: general, forensic mental health, or community development.
