Master of Science in Human Resources with Concentration in Organizational Leadership

The bachelor of science in fire science is offered with a choice of two concentrations to allow the student to major in fire science and specialize in an area of interest. The concentration areas are fire/arson investigation and fire administration.

Program Outcomes:

• Students can analyze and manage multi-hazard emergency conditions, and make appropriate strategic, tactical and task decisions to mitigate the incident.
• Students can establish an incident command system at an emergency in accordance with national standards.
• Students can identify causes of fires within the community and establish appropriate fire prevention strategies
• Students understand the role of a fire officer within the local government and can apply knowledge of leadership, organizational issues, regulations and standards to ensure organizational effectiveness in the administration of a fire fighting company, battalion or department.
• Ability to make strategic and tactical decisions relating to management of a fire service organization in the areas of budgeting, project management, contract negotiations, discipline and conflict resolution.

Candidates are required to complete a minimum of 36 credits of graduate work, which may include an internship in national security. Transfer credit from other institutions may be permitted subject to the Graduate School policy on transfer credit detailed elsewhere in this catalog.

Students in the program are required to complete 18 credits of core courses and 18 credits of general electives.  Students must complete a capstone requirement of either NSPS 6693 - National Security Internship I or NSPS 6697 Thesis I and  NSPS 6698 Thesis II. If the six credit thesis option is selected, NSPS 6698  Thesis II will count toward electives.

Marine Affairs is an interdisciplinary field that studies the relationships between humans and the marine environment with the goal of achieving sustainability of marine resources, as well as social and environmental justice.

Marine Affairs professionals work to develop better policies and management strategies to address the many complex issues related to human uses of the world’s coasts and oceans. Examples of some of the major issues we are currently facing include natural resource decline, pollution, climate change, impacts of coastal development, among others.

When you pursue a career in Marine Affairs, you will play an integral role in finding better ways to educate and inform the public about these issues and potential solutions.

You'll be prepared to pursue a career with a variety of entities, including government agencies that oversee the management of marine resources (e.g. NOAA and EPA or state and local agencies), as well as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) interested in creating solutions for the sustainable use of the marine and coastal resources and educating the public about these issues.

You'll also have opportunities with international organizations dedicated to preserving the environment or academic institutions, where you can teach and do research to inform better policies.

The Absolute Value of the 2022 Mathematics Research Community

The American Mathematics Society (AMS) has accepted a proposal by faculty members — including the University of New Haven’s Daniel Cicala — for a Mathematics Research Community on Applied Category Theory to be held in the summer of 2022. The faculty will lead 40 early-career mathematicians through an intensive week of research on that topic. The AMS Mathematics Research Communities is a professional development program for mathematicians who are just starting out. The program helps them develop collaborative research skills and build a network centered around an active research domain. Mentoring from leaders in the specific topic area and valuable career guidance are also part of the equation.

Within each program option described above, students may concentrate in industrial-human resources, organizational development, or conflict management. A concentration requires 12 credits of electives, which are counted as part of the 21 credits required in the elective option (Thesis, Internship/Practicum, or Approved Electives) selected by the student. If a concentration is selected, the student must notify the program coordinator as well as the Registrar. A concentration is not required if the student’s educational or career goals can best be met without this specialization.

Program Outcomes

• Students will master theory and techniques related to core areas of industrial-organizational psychology including talent identification and development, work motivation, training, human capital practices, organization and group behavior.
• Students will learn how to employ the knowledge gained through their classes to the workplace through supervised experiential learning opportunities such as internships, practicum, case studies, and applied research projects.
• Students will conduct applied organizational research and interpret research used to make business decisions.

A total of 45 credits is required of candidates for the master of arts degree in industrial/organizational psychology. Candidates for this degree must complete 24 credits of basic program requirements. Another 21 credits (including concentrations, program options, and electives) are chosen after consultation with the program coordinator in light of the student’s academic and professional goals. Students may not complete more than nine credits of electives until they have satisfied the basic requirements. Up to nine credits of electives may be taken in other departments, such as industrial engineering, economics, management, marketing, and public administration.

Human uses of the marine environment, including fishing, aquaculture, energy development, and tourism, have increased significantly in the past two decades. Coastal areas are highly productive and resource-rich ecosystems and also account for some of the most sought-after real estate in the world. Multiple uses, potentially conflicting interests, and economic and social dependency create ever more complex issues of sustainability, environmental law and policy, and resource management.

Through the University of New Haven’s Master of Arts in Marine Policy and Management program, you will acquire a deeper understanding of the complex forces at play in marine-linked human and natural systems. Economics is the study of making choices. It is both a lens and an occupation. As a lens, economics enables us to view, organize, and explain the world around us in a coherent systematic manner. As an occupation, we find its fundamental principles are most often applied in the world of business, although not exclusively. Economics also prepares students for careers in fields as diverse as government service, law, and non-governmental institutions. Importantly, the economics degree offers outstanding preparation for graduate and professional programs.

The University of New Haven’s undergraduate program in economics provides students with the analytical and technical skills that are valued by employers. In addition to the General Education requirements, the B.A. Economics requires 33 credits. The 33-credit program is comprised of 24 credits of courses required for all B.A. Economics majors and 9 credits from one of two concentrations. The Behavioral Economics concentration entails taking a series of more specialized economics courses leading towards the Behavioral Economics focus. Alternatively, a student can choose to retain a more general and broader overview of Economics through the General Economics concentration

The International Business - Finance degree is designed to provide in-depth expertise in the discipline of finance while it concurrently provides students with a broader, global business perspective. Such perspective is essential to operating in today’s increasing complex multi-national business context. The program ensures students have a proficiency in a second language, enhanced socio-cultural awareness and a robust study abroad experience. Today’s business climate is marked by fluid and interconnected financial markets, widely available technological advancements that increase global connectivity, increased international trade, and the emergence of vibrant growing economies in what were formerly considered third world countries. Increased globalization has necessitated that managers have a broad, holistic perspective that incorporates the diverse components of an international business degree. Such a degree will become increasingly valuable as the trends associated with 21st century commerce progress.

• Students will demonstrate knowledge of financial markets and institutions and be able to apply the basic principles of corporate finance, international finance, and investment analysis.
• Students will evaluate how the cultural and legal differences between the country in which they studied abroad and the U.S. would impact how they operate in that country.
