A paramedic has a level of knowledge, skill, and treatment capabilities that are significantly beyond those of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and which can dramatically improve a patient’s outcome at the hospital. In response to the need for these uniquely trained emergency medical care professionals, the University of New Haven developed its paramedicine program. This program will prepare you to become a new breed of first responder – one who holds dual certification as both a firefighter and as a paramedic.

Hands-on learning will be a major part of your education. You’ll ride along with ambulance services and take patients’ vitals. You’ll practice doing chest compressions and starting IV lines on high-fidelity mannequins. You’ll become part of teams who care for patients in whatever medical emergency unfolds. The goal of the paramedicine program is to make your education as real-world as it gets.

Through this program, offered in conjunction with Yale New Haven Hospital, you will also:

• Become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
• Gain more than 700 hours of clinical and internship experience through multiple models of EMS services, including hospital-based and fire-based
• Expand your knowledge through classes in anatomy and physiology at the Yale University School of Medicine
• Become eligible to sit for the National Registry Paramedic exam at the completion of your studies
• Have a chance to join the Pre-Health Professions (PHP) Scholars Program, which can serve as a launching pad for pursuing a career or further study in healthcare

Several courses have integrated the CFA® curriculum as provided by CFA Institute and are based on the Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) from the CFA® Program. Topics in these courses assist students in preparation for the CFA® exam.*

Pick an interdisciplinary concentration

In addition to core classes in health sciences, our unique concentrations enable you to follow an additional path of study and specialize in in-demand health care fields.

Occupational Therapy: Learn to work in conjunction with other health professionals to help clients develop skills and interact with adapted environments to perform daily activities and meet personal goals.

Speech-Language Pathology: Learn to assess, diagnose, treat, and help prevent communication disorders involving articulation, language development, voice, swallowing, and more.

Candidates are required to complete a minimum of 36 credits of graduate work, which may include an internship in national security. Transfer credit from other institutions may be permitted subject to the Graduate School policy on transfer credit detailed elsewhere in this catalog.

Students in the program are required to complete 18 credits of core courses and 18 credits of general electives.  Students must complete a capstone requirement of either NSPS 6693 - National Security Internship I or NSPS 6697 Thesis I and  NSPS 6698 Thesis II. If the six credit thesis option is selected, NSPS 6698  Thesis II will count toward electives.

Choices and trade-offs are, therefore, a given. Where do we direct those limited resources? What are we willing to give up in order to make something else happen? It’s a complicated balance, and it’s the job of an economist to guide informed decision making. Because of the magnitude of this work, salaries for economics graduates are among the highest of any discipline.

The University of New Haven’s B.A. in Economics provides a balanced curriculum of liberal arts, business, and industry management, alongside history and politics. The B.S. in Health Sciences combines basic scientific knowledge, healthcare industry specific knowledge, and practical skills for students to be competitive in the 21st century healthcare workforce. The program addresses both the administrative and technical aspects of healthcare as well as the professional, social, ethical, and political elements.  Courses provide broad technical skills as well as the organizational competencies needed for entry level positions in a wide range of healthcare organizations and companies, as well as preparation for graduate study in clinical professions.  In particular, this program aims to provide a broad, interdisciplinary training for students interested in clinical and non-clinical health fields including but not limited to medicine, population health, clinical research administration, and healthcare administration.  The B.S. in Health Sciences also offers two optional concentrations: Speech-Language Pathology and Occupational Therapy.  Each of these concentrations focuses on a specific healthcare profession and is designed to prepare students for graduate school in an area of specialization.
