The MA in Language, Literature, and Translation (MALLT) is an interdisciplinary MA degree program focused on global languages, literatures and translation. With over 50 faculty from five different departments, MALLT offers a flexible program of study tailored to your professional goals. Three departments—French, Italian and Comparative Literature, Foreign Languages and Literature and Translation & Interpreting Studies cooperate in offering this interdepartmental, interdisciplinary master’s program designed for the student who wishes to focus on language, literature, and translation on a cross-cultural basis.

Being bilingual is not enough to be a successful translator. Professional translators must be experts in both source and target cultures, skilled readers of the source language and superb writers of the target language. In addition, they need expertise in an area of specialization and a solid grasp of the language-services industry.

Our Translation & Interpreting Studies programs are housed in an accredited, Tier 1 Research institution and offer professional translator and interpreter training in a dynamic environment. Students collaborate with faculty and classmates from around the world to develop the skills they need to succeed in a thriving international market. Learn how to translate and/or interpret, and how to be a language professional through using leading industry computer-assisted translation tools and completing internships that often lead to employment. Materials science is involved with all the processes that turn natural resources into useful products that impact all facets of our economy such as aerospace, electronics, transportation, communication, construction, recreation, entertainment and environment.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Dance prepares students to teach participatory movement traditions in community settings, and to lead community groups in creating and performing their own dances and movement rituals. Community-based service-learning experiences provide many opportunities to realize these goals. Many Dance BA students pursue a double major at UWM; the service-learning component provides an opportunity to integrate the content of the two areas of study.

The Biomedical Sciences Department offers a program of graduate education providing an advanced level of study for students interested in biology as it relates to human health, medicine, and disease. Major emphasis in the program is placed on developing an understanding of the mechanisms involved in human diseases and providing broad-based training in both basic and applied biomedical sciences. In-depth training is offered in selected areas of emphasis, such as immunology, the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, toxicology, pharmacology, neurodegeneration, and cancer biology. The MS degree has two tracks.

• Thesis Track requirements include a thesis based on hypothesis-driven research conducted by the student to enhance problem-solving abilities and the student’s capacity to function more effectively in the biomedical field.
• The Non-Thesis Track is designed for students who want to gain knowledge in the biomedical sciences by taking courses focused on human health and disease without a research component. This track may be suitable for a variety of students, including those who currently work in a laboratory setting and wish to obtain a higher degree and those requiring a degree beyond the bachelor-s level to teach.

Centered on the study and use of digital technologies in direct relation to traditional visual art, our students combine interactive and electronic media with a secondary established focus (such as Ceramics, Fibers, Design etc.) to create new forms of art.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers a Bachelor of Science degree, which provides the pre-professional foundation for graduate study. The student who plans to become a professional speech-language pathologist or audiologist will receive preparation in human communication sciences and disorders as well as a broad educational experience in the liberal arts and sciences.

Everyone is part of multiple social groups. Your local community, your ethnic group, your religious organization, your state, your club or team—these are all examples of groups to which you might belong. The Sociology major at UWM offers students a chance to better understand these groups and the people within them. Students explore the social causes and consequences of human behavior, including topics such as political movements, population shifts, housing patterns, racism, gender inequality, the legal system, the medical profession, crime, families, sexuality, workplace organization, food cultures, and more.

The competitive field of Design requires practitioners who are intellectually curious, inventive, dedicated, critical, collaborative, and proactive life-long learners. Our students meet that need by developing as strategists, problem-identifiers, problem-solvers, and business partners.

Civil Engineering is a profession that deals with the infrastructure of society and impacts your everyday life. From the roads and bridges you use every day to the drinking water that comes out of your tap at home, civil engineers work to develop safe, efficient and sustainable ways to continually improve our infrastructure.

Geotechnical Engineering
Geotechnical Engineering utilizes the disciplines of rock and soil mechanics to investigate subsurface and geologic conditions. These investigations are used to design and build foundations, earth structures and pavement sub-grades.

This concentration is designed for the music student with an undergraduate degree in piano who wishes to specialize as a collaborative pianist in instrumental repertoire. A student must successfully pass an audition that demonstrates an advanced level of collaborative skill to qualify for admission to the program.

Applicant proposing concentration in Music Performance Collaborative Piano: Instrumental must demonstrate outstanding performance skills. An on-site audition is required; in extreme cases, recorded examples of an applicant’s performance may be accepted in lieu of an in-person audition. Applicant should contact faculty in the appropriate performance area to inquire about specific audition repertoire and procedures.
