Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

You’ve decided you enjoy working with persons with disabilities either through direct care or administrative service. Not quite sure which is the best career path? The Bachelor of Science in Occupational Science and Technology allows you the chance to pursue a variety of career options. A flexible educational path, combined with a blend of elective courses, and you’ll be prepared to work in different health and human service settings.
You will also be particularly well prepared for further graduate study in Occupational Therapy and other disability related disciplines. Acceptance and completion of the undergraduate program in occupational studies does not guarantee admission into the Master of Occupational Therapy Program.
Become part of a large interdisciplinary department with specialty areas in assistive technology, engineering, occupational therapy and therapeutic recreation. The Master of Science in Biostatistics program provides an innovative curriculum to meet a range of professional needs and interests. The program trains students in study design, appropriate use of statistical and computational techniques, and interpretation of data analysis results arising from public health and biomedical research. Students learn both classical and modern statistical methods and apply their statistical skills and knowledge to solve "big data” problems. They have the opportunity to work with faculty on cutting edge research projects, such as discovering genetic causes of common diseases, developing statistical algorithms to monitor treatment efficacy, and reducing medical costs through electronic health record.

Bachelor of Arts, Major in Committee Interdisciplinary with Concentration in Japanese Language and Culture
As one of the five largest world economies, professional opportunities exist for individuals who are proficient in the Japanese language and who can understand and integrate into Japanese culture.
A Committee Interdisciplinary Major with a focus on Japanese language and culture can be the first step towards a career path in teaching, translation, interpretation, government relations, social services, the travel or hospitality industry, business, technology, finance or sales. Many students are also interested in careers related to Anime or computer technology, both large industries in Japan. A major in Japanese combined with technology and science training is excellent preparation for entry into those fields.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Dance prepares students to teach participatory movement traditions in community settings, and to lead community groups in creating and performing their own dances and movement rituals. Many Dance BA students pursue a double major at UWM; the service-learning component provides an opportunity to integrate the content of the two areas of study.

Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies with Concentration in Global Management
The Global Management track of UWM's Global Studies program focuses on the impact of globalization on business and the world economy. Global Studies-Management prepares students as future managers, capable of analyzing transnational issues; strategizing within a global, cross-cultural context; and implementing projects with a strong understanding of globalization's implications for the private and public sectors. Students are required to complete a study abroad program, an overseas internship, and study a foreign language, both practical and applied experiences that provide a distinct edge. This track will prepare students to assume leadership roles in many areas, but it will be advantageous especially in such fields as international business, consulting, education, government, and public policy. In addition, graduates of this track will meet the background course requirements for admission to an MBA program. The College of Letters and Science and the Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business jointly award this degree.

The School Counseling concentration prepares students to work as school counselors. The program is approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Students are trained to apply the principles of learning, human development, counseling, and research and measurement within the schools. The MA in Language, Literature, and Translation (MALLT) is an interdisciplinary MA degree program focused on global languages, literatures and translation. With over 50 faculty from five different departments, MALLT offers a flexible program of study tailored to your professional goals. Three departments—French, Italian and Comparative Literature, Foreign Languages and Literature and Translation & Interpreting Studies cooperate in offering this interdepartmental, interdisciplinary master’s program designed for the student who wishes to focus on language, literature, and translation on a cross-cultural basis.

Master of Music with concentration in String Pedagogy
This concentration is designed for the music student who wishes to concentrate primarily on the pedagogy of his/her major performing string instrument. A student must successfully pass an audition at a satisfactory level of performance for admission to the program.
Applicant proposing concentration in Music Performance String Pedagogy must demonstrate outstanding performance skills. An on-site audition is required; in extreme cases, recorded examples of an applicant’s performance may be accepted in lieu of an in-person audition. Applicant should contact faculty in the appropriate performance area to inquire about specific audition repertoire and procedures.
