The study of Philosophy can be challenging because it asks students to critically examine very fundamental questions about what it means to be human - behavior, values, ethics, logic, aesthetics. Some describe it as "thinking in slow motion" because of the way it explores in depth the human experience.

Students choose philosophy because it instills a lifelong love and quest for knowledge, it imparts a disciplined and systematic way of thinking, and it enhances critical and analytical capacities. Most graduates of philosophy describe the great personal reward that comes from exploring the great thinkers of the past in the context of modern issues. But, they also passionately value the career skills that they developed - how to read and comprehend difficult text; how to understand different interpretations of information and assess opposing viewpoints; how to craft a clear and logical position on an issue in writing and orally; and how to make connections between smaller, seemingly disparate details and the big picture.

Everything we use is made of some material or combination of materials. Materials science is involved with all the processes that turn natural resources into useful products that impact all facets of our economy such as aerospace, electronics, transportation, communication, construction, recreation, entertainment and environment.

This concentration is designed for the music student who wishes to concentrate primarily on the major performing skill.

Applicant proposing concentration in Music Performance Vocal Emphasis must demonstrate outstanding performance skills. An on-site audition is required; in extreme cases, recorded examples of an applicant’s performance may be accepted in lieu of an in-person audition. Applicant should contact faculty in the appropriate performance area to inquire about specific audition repertoire and procedures.

The Physics Department exhibits exceptional strength in several areas. We invite applications from able students interested in experimental and theoretical surface physics and condensed matter physics; in structural biophysics and protein dynamics and function; in quantum field theory, cosmology, relativistic astrophysics, and gravitational-wave/multimessenger astronomy; in medical imaging.  The primary goal of our graduate education is the training of creative research scientists.

The Department of Communication offers MA and PhD programs. The Master of Arts is designed to provide breadth and depth of study in the following areas: Organizational/Professional Communication, Intercultural/International Communication, Interpersonal Communication/Mediation, and Rhetoric/Public Communication. The program provides initial and advanced preparation for a variety of careers including continued study leading to the PhD degree.

The College of Letters and Science and the Lubar School of Business offer and present jointly the Master of Public Administration (MPA).

The program is designed to provide theoretical and practical preparation for careers in public and non-profit administration with three areas of concentration: municipal management, general public administration, and non-profit management.

Emphasizing the use, implementation, management and evaluation of information technologies for a wide range of organizations, the IT concentration will prepare you to work in a diverse information technology landscape.

The School of Information Studies prepares students for careers in libraries and the information professions. The School’s array of graduate programs provides students with the opportunity to develop attitudes associated with progressive information services, and to develop an understanding of the value, role, and application of modern technology as it relates to library operations and the transfer of information.

Our program focuses on instilling in every student the practical, hands-on knowledge of materials and fabrication techniques necessary to cross boundaries, invent processes, and explore innovative content in the areas of object-making, installation, performance, site-work, time-based art, and digital forms.

Atmospheric Science is the study of short-term weather and long-term climate, involving activities such as weather forecasting, climate projections, air quality modeling, data analysis, and basic and applied research.

Some universities may call this major "Meteorology." We call it Atmospheric Science because our program is much broader than just weather forecasting. Students in our program will obtain a solid foundation in the mathematical modeling that forms the basis of analysis not just of tomorrow's expected weather but also long-term climate change, storm impact and predictability, pollution patterns and impact, and the consequences of weather to people and organizations.

The Department of Health Informatics and Administration in the College of Health Sciences offers the Master of Science in Health Care Informatics degree. Health care informatics focuses on the use of information technologies, data analytics and automation to improve health care. Professional expertise in health care informatics is needed by hospitals and other health care providers, medical centers and facilities, medical software companies, pharmaceutical companies, public health organizations, health insurance companies and medical research institutions. The master's program is designed to meet the demand for highly trained health care informatics professionals. The curriculum covers several areas including: systems analysis and design, database design and management, clinical decision support and computer programming. Students also get exposed to cutting-edge research in areas such as big data, predictive analytics, natural language processing, medical knowledge representation and information retrieval, which are rapidly becoming indispensable for improving health care.
