The Bachelor of Science degree from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology focuses on preparing students for careers in fields including, but not limited to, medicine and health, drug manufacturing and design, agriculture, forensic science (crime lab science), academic/industrial research and development, and scientific writing.

The teaching and research programs of the department are conducted in modern, well-equipped classrooms and laboratories. Our curriculum fosters the development of active learning, teamwork, critical thinking, scientific reasoning and communication skills, as well as, relevant content knowledge in both biochemistry and molecular biology. Within the curriculum there are many opportunities for students to be associated with cutting-edge research through independent studies and undergraduate research projects.

We will work with your schedule, as we are transitioning to 100 percent remote course delivery. You can take two courses per semester and finish your degree in five semesters. You take courses in a cohort model that includes program-related experiences that integrate theory and practice.  

Your coursework will address the principles of individual-based leader development, focusing on processes that build the capacities of groups in organizations. Statistics is distinct from mathematics as a field of study, yet is founded upon the theory of probability—the mathematics of chance. The Bachelor of Science in Statistics is a degree program emphasizing statistics both as a science unto itself and as a service science, with powerful applications in such disciplines as biology, medicine, sociology, chemistry, agriculture, education, engineering, economics, psychology, and quality control. Graduate from this program, and you should be well qualified for employment in the many corporations and government agencies for which statisticians design experiments, conduct surveys, and analyze data. Classics is the foundation of Western Civilization, from Bronze Age Greece to the Fall of Rome. It encompasses a wide variety of subjects, including language, literature, history, history and philosophy of science, political science, philosophy, art history, archeology, and mythology.

Studying classics will teach you to think holistically about societies in the past. At the same time, you can see parallels in modern society. Our Founding Fathers looked to the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome to draft the documents by which we Americans live. Ninety percent of English words over two syllables come from Latin. The Bachelor of Science curriculum offers a broad, integrated, and in-depth approach to the life sciences. Departmental requirements consist of a balanced core of courses selected from several subject areas, combined with elective courses from the Department of Biological Sciences and other life science departments such as Neuroscience, Cell Biology and Physiology, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. This degree program can accommodate students with such differing interests and objectives as graduate work in molecular biology, laboratory work in microbiology, or field work in ecology. The B.S. degree also can serve as preprofessional preparation for programs such as medical, dental, or veterinary sciences, or for education licensure.

Biological Sciences Program Learning Objectives

The honors program in the Department of Art and Art History is designed to give students with outstanding academic ability and superior accomplishments in art history the opportunity to complete a program that encourages and recognizes their distinguished efforts. These students may earn an honors degree by completing the departmental major requirements, maintaining a high academic record, and successfully completing a senior honors project. Students are usually admitted to the program during their junior year. Interested students can obtain information on the honors program from the Department of Art and Art History office.

The Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience was developed by an interdisciplinary team of Wright State University faculty, and emphasizes how physics, biology, chemistry, psychology, and mathematics are integrated to become the field of neuroscience. Courses are designed so that the majority of the time, students are doing rather than listening. The program’s coursework focuses on the cell biology and physiology of neurons and neuronal circuits. It includes training in research techniques, and opportunities to assist faculty with their research. Students will be competitively prepared for health-related preprofessional programs, scientific research, and other career paths.

Program Learning Goals and Skills

The Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience program is focused on in-depth neuroscience content knowledge centered around four main learning goals:

    Organization – There is an expansive, yet repetitive, organization to the nervous system, that matches structure with function.
    Cellular Neurophysiology – Neurons are cells with dynamic and excitable membranes. Specialized receptors and channels underlie all chemical and electrical signals in the nervous system.
    Information Processing – The effectiveness of communication between neurons is highly modifiable and is critical for regulating the flow of information within neural networks. Information is also encoded in the timing of signals.
    Neural Networks and Behavior – The average adult brain contains approximately 100 billion neurons with 100 trillion connections, that make a multitude of connections with each other in an organized fashion. This connectivity serves as the link between structure and function, dictating our behavioral responses to various innocuous and traumatic stimuli.

Studying one of the modern languages at Wright State will help you improve your ability to read, write, and speak in another language, study how that language is used in a social context, and become a more enlightened citizen. Mechanical engineers focus on the analysis, design, automation, fabrication, testing, evaluation, and optimization of mechanical systems. Mechanical engineers are designers and problem solvers who are involved, in some way, with practically everything around us.

Historically, mechanical engineering (ME) includes two branches of study. The first deals with heat, fluids, and energy, such as combustion in a rocket engine, the wind and water flow past a racing yacht, or the design of a solar panel for a space station. The second area concerns force and motion in mechanical systems such as determining robot trajectories, analyzing automotive vibration and noise, and computing stress levels in the wings of a new aircraft.
