The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers this interdisciplinary program as a combined major.

Courses are taught in English and cover the literatures and cultures of Western Europe, as well as Romance Linguistics. French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish texts are read in translation and assignments are completed in English.

You’ll work with the very best faculty, artists and theatre professionals from Niagara, the GTA and beyond.

As part of the core, you will take courses that integrate theory and practice (praxis). These involve a mix of lectures and studio work that explore ways in which creativity and analysis are linked culturally and historically.

You may choose one of the following areas of concentration:

• Drama in Education and Applied Theatre explores theatre’s impact outside the traditional theatre space, including the ways drama and theatre activities enhance the learning process.
• Performance involves a core series of courses to actualize your potential as a stage actor.
• Production and Design prepares you for production work, crewing, design and other elements of technical theatre stagecraft.

Our Master of Arts program is designed to integrate these important elements in an educational experience promoting a high level of expertise and professionalism.

We currently offer opportunities for graduate studies in Applied Linguistics for those interested in the field of Teaching English as a Second/Subsequent Language (TESL), as well as for those with an interest in applying linguistics more generally, or to other domains, including Speech Communication Disorders.

Graduates of this professional program will be well-prepared to become TESL professionals, practicing in Canada or abroad AND/OR prepared for future graduate pursuits in fields related to Applied Linguistics, including Speech-Language Pathology.

BRIDGED ENTRY — COURSE-BASED OR MAJOR RESEARCH PAPER (FOR APPLICANTS WHO NEED EXTRA ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUPPORT).
Our unique Bridged Entry program is designed for students who would benefit from further assistance using academic English, providing hands-on, preparatory instruction plus one-on-one mentoring throughout the academic year.

While course work is taken with the Direct Entry students at the same academic and professional level, Bridged Entry students have an additional preparatory course (LING 5N01) running from the beginning of July to the end of August before coursework begins. This preparatory course covers topics from academic integrity to the appropriate construction of an academic paper for applied linguistics. In addition, from September to August, Bridged Entry students have regular access to a Writing Mentor who is able to help with the mechanics of writing effective research papers, essays and other assignments.

The Distinct and Diverse Communities program involves courses offered through Brock University and Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology. This four-year program combines either an Honours Bachelor of Arts (BA) Distinct and Diverse Communities or a BA With Major Distinct and Diverse Communities at Brock with training in a variety of applied social service settings at the colleges.

Students obtain both solid applied skills and a strong theoretical foundation in a variety of aspects of social services. The program leads to career opportunities in a wide variety of areas in the social services for Immigrants and Refugees in the Province of Ontario. At Brock, students complete an integrated series of courses from a wide variety of disciplines. At Seneca students complete the Social Service Worker - Immigrants and Refugees program. Obtaining both an Honours BA or BA with Major and a college diploma would ordinarily involve at least five years of study, but this Brock-Seneca program combines the two in a single integrated package that can be completed in four years. Enrolment is limited.

The CCES certificate prepares students for the rigours of post-secondary studies in the broad field of Education and related disciplines.

CCES provides a background in educational theory, Canadian educational context, and Canadian culture. Crucial skills required to be successful in Canadian post-secondary programs such as research skills, critical thinking skills, academic communication skills and problem-solving skills, are provided through an educational studies context. Opportunities for international students to improve their English language proficiency, increase their familiarity with Canadian cultural practices, and engage in Canadian communities are integrated into the program. Assistance with applying to advanced post-secondary programs is provided. The international student will be well-prepared to apply to, and succeed in, an academic program at a Canadian postsecondary institution.

History is at the heart of every educated citizen. To understand the present and prepare for the future, one must learn about the past.

At Brock, History is much more than memorizing facts and dates — it involves exploring changes and continuities in bygone societies, cultures and peoples.

The study of History entails following your interests and curiosities, evaluating and interpreting evidence, as well as formulating logical arguments based on that evidence.

LCBE prepares graduates for positions in community-based educational settings with internships and an introduction to Canadian workplace practices.

Program Outline
LCBE courses are designed to provide essential knowledge about educational theories and leadership practices and to develop critical communication and collaboration skills, preparing the student to seek employment in community-based education settings or pursue advanced post-secondary studies in Canada.

Are you interested in how children acquire language, how the skills of second-language speakers develop, how various language disorders can be diagnosed and treated, or how social or cultural environments interact with language?

Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL): Learn how second language learning is different from first language learning, and prepare to teach ESL in different contexts. Learn about advanced theory and practice of second language learning and teaching, and complete a major research paper in our MA Applied Linguistics/TESL program.

This program is an innovative answer to your demands as an international student, as it combines an intensive Business English program with Canadian accounting knowledge and also addresses the demands of a business world that needs accountants who can think critically, communicate effectively and respond to challenges that arise from around the globe. Your success as an MPAcc grad is due to our focus on a strong, integrative approach to accounting.

Sociology as a discipline challenges everyday assumptions about the world in which we live. Sociologists turn ‘common sense’ ideas on their head through critical examination of social institutions, relationships and conditions shaping the world and the experiences of individuals.

Sociology students are encouraged to develop and employ their sociological imagination to examine the complex social world, relationships and the human condition.

Three-degree streams are available, as single majors or combined majors between Sociology and other disciplines. A collaborative program is also offered, where students may earn both a degree and a diploma.
