Overview

Cambrian Powerline program is the longest running program in the province. We offer an on-campus outdoor training field and industry-experienced faculty. As a Cambrian grad, you will have acquired the skills necessary to diagnose intricate electrical problems in a fast paced dynamic industry.

Safety is paramount. Students will learn to consider safety first and become advocates in support of a safe work place. The Powerline technician program covers the following:

Co-op Diploma Apprenticeship Option
Students have the opportunity to register as Powerline Technician Apprentices with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU). Level 1 and 2 in-school (MAESD) training is offered by Infrastructure Health and Safety Association and is available to students who meet the criteria for coop placements. Students participating in the level one and two training must pay a portion of the cost (approximately $2,000). The placement is optional and is not required to graduate from Cambrian's regular post secondary Powerline Technician program. In order to qualify for the coop placement, students must meet strict academic standards and be successful at securing a coop. Students who participate in both paid coops gain real world experience and complete two out of the four levels required to challenge the "red seal" exam.

Our environmental program is here to satisfy the interest individuals have in making a difference. The environmental field is a fairly unique field where workers can be doing the kinds of activities they find interesting, working outdoors, while doing a job that makes the world a better place. Our graduate certificate program aims to provide hands-on skills and applied knowledge to students with a theoretical background in the field.

Our focus is on environmental monitoring, particularly in fulfillment of Environmental Site and Impact Assessments. Knowledge, reporting and hands-on skills are important aspects of what we deliver.

The program’s emphasis is on environmental monitoring (air, water, soil, ecology) in support of industry requirements as well as part of Environmental Site/Impact Assessments. Learn from professors who are active in the field; being in Sudbury offers a unique perspective to learn firsthand the consequences of environmental impacts, and provides unique opportunities with on-going monitoring projects. The classroom component of the program is supported by a placement for ‘on-the-job’ training to ensure you obtain the necessary hands-on skills in the field.

Diploma in Fitness and Health Promotion

People are living longer than ever before and are increasingly concerned about maintaining their health and physical fitness. Considering Canada's aging demographic and increases in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases in the general population, many medical and allied health practitioners are promoting the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle. 

This program will provide you with a blend of fitness education and health promotion principles in order to meet the growing demand for health professionals that are qualified to deliver programs that emphasize active living. The program will help you develop the skills and knowledge to change and inspire the lives of others through courses that focus on health promotion, individual and group exercise programming, nutrition, fitness assessment, and recreation management. 

Students will have the opportunity to obtain certifications in the field of health and fitness:

  • Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology Certified Personal Trainer (CSEP-CPT) designation,
  • Fitness certifications with the Ontario Fitness Council,
  • Specialty certifications with Sport for Life, High Five, and the National Coaching Certification Program.

In this program, you'll learn electrical, mechanical and carpentry fundamentals while focusing on workplace safety.  Class projects are chosen to provide a wide range of skills which will prepare you for future training.  Practical courses in technology, science/physics, math, English, and computers provide a strong foundation to pursue subsequent postsecondary programs.

In just eight months, you’ll develop a communications skill set that that will luminate your career path to a management position in public relations. This program is offered in an alternate delivery format geared specifically to those who are currently working in the field of early childhood education (must be working for a minimum of six months full time, directly with children). This unique alternate delivery program is the only one of this type in Ontario and allows you to complete your diploma while continuing to work in the field.

As a student in Early Childhood Education at Cambrian College, you will have the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for the field of early learning and child care. Your studies will blend the theory of child growth and development with practical application experiences in the field.  Through interactive classroom experiences, you will design, plan, implement, and evaluate play-based learning for young children from birth to twelve years of age.

The program will prepare you to work with and support the diverse needs of the children and families you will encounter in your future work. You will build a foundation of understanding that children learn through play. As a Developmental Services Professional, students are embarking on a rewarding career supporting children and adults experiencing life with physical disabilities, developmental and intellectual disabilities and dual diagnosis. Students will learn how to effectively use a person centered approach and positive behaviour supports to support behavioural, emotional, mental, physical and social needs. Students will also learn about the stages of human development, spectrum of disabilities, modes of communication, basic nursing and medication administration competencies and the range of community supports.

In addition, students will learn the value of working within legislative frameworks as it relates to positive behaviour supports, person centered supports, educational supports, crisis management and the constructing of a safe, respectful and quality life. Students will develop advocacy skills through relationship building and the critical thinking skills required to support individuals who live life with physical disabilities, developmental and intellectual disabilities and dual diagnosis.

Learning will be complemented by extensive hands-on experience gained through Field Placement opportunities, beginning with a Field Placement block in semester two and continuing with placements in semesters three and four. The Developmental Services Worker - Alternate Delivery Program allows students the flexibility and choice to attend virtual classes in real time or watch video lecture captures at a time that is convenient for them. All course evaluations, tests, assignments, projects, etc. can be completed on Cambrian's Learning Management System, Moodle.

Cambrian's accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography – Ultrasound program will prepare you for entry-level roles in hospitals, medical clinics, and private industry. You will learn to safely use scanning equipment and imaging techniques to produce images of a body part or system, skills that can be required throughout the different departments of a clinical facility including the trauma unit, operating room, and intensive care area, as well as the diagnostic imaging department.
