MINERAL RESOURCE ENGINEERING
Mineral resource engineers develop economically and environmentally responsible ways of extracting and processing minerals from the Earth. Mineral resource engineers evaluate the economics of mineral deposits; develop plans for surface mines, roadways and tunnels; design underground mine plants and ventilation systems; ensure mine safety and environmental protection; and develop innovative mine technology.

Co-op options
Co-op students take the same academic program as the non co-op program; however, our co-op option gives you an opportunity to complement your studies with three paid work terms.

CIVIL ENGINEERING
Civil engineers provide a major contribution to society. They design and construct the infrastructures we use every day, from the roadways we travel on to the power stations that provide our homes with electricity.

Areas of focus
Students who choose to complete a degree in Civil Engineering will choose one of two distinct areas of focus:

• Option 1: Infrastructure
  • Students who choose structural engineering and materials will focus on the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructures, including buildings, bridges, highways, airports, power plants and tunnels and the materials that will ensure their resiliency and sustainability. This stream allows students to choose technical electives from any of the sub-disciplines in Civil Engineering.
• Option 2: Earth and Environment
  • With a focus on water and wastewater treatment, solid waste management, and environmental systems analysis, students will learn to identify and design solutions to mediate and mitigate human impacts on the environment. Students in this option may choose to specialize in the Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences courses that are directly relevant to the Civil Engineering profession.

WHY STUDY BIOCHEMISTRY & MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AT DAL?
With a degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, you’ll study the building blocks of life. Learn from professors who are conducting exciting research in evolutionary and genome biology and the metabolic basis of disease and cancer. At Dalhousie, you’ll set yourself up for a career in an emerging field at the forefront of discovery in medicine and biotechnology.

What will I learn?
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology are the molecular basis of life. You’ll get a deeper understanding of the biological function of large molecules such as proteins and DNA and interpret complex processes that define all living organisms.

You'll begin with foundation courses in biology and chemistry. Then, after an introduction to biochemistry theory and laboratory skills, you'll begin specialization in areas of biochemistry and molecular biology.  In fourth year, you'll have the opportunity to complete an honours project, gaining experience in hands-on laboratory research. Students will also have the opportunity to complete work terms through the co-op education program.

Biology is the study of life and living things. You’ll examine the physical and biological processes that affect the life and death of genes, cells, individuals, populations, species, and ecosystems.

Depending on your interests and the courses you take, you might learn how to identify indigenous flowering plants, go scuba diving to conduct underwater experiments, or venture out on the ocean to study minke and humpback whales. You’ll look at the simplest forms of plants and animals—think algae and one-celled organisms—as well as the highly complex.

You’ll attend classroom lectures and have access to Dalhousie’s amazing research facilities. But you’ll also get out into the world and apply your classroom knowledge hands-on—whether you participate in the Science Co-op program and work in a research lab off campus, or travel to one of Nova Scotia’s beautiful coastal areas to collect samples from a tidal pool.

WHY STUDY THE SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM AT DALHOUSIE?
This program is your career accelerator in business after completing your diploma. Designed for future entrepreneurs, business owners, operators and more, this program positions you to transform your diploma to an undergraduate degree in as little as two years. 

IS SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT FOR ME?
Have you completed a two-year diploma? Have you dreamt about the possibility of owning and operating your own business or have thought about taking your career to the next level? If so, Small Business Management could be your next step. In completing the Small Business Management program, you will earn much more than an undergraduate degree. The program complements and enhances the technical expertise gained in your initial twoyear diploma program and positions you for careers in business management or ownership. With only an extra two years, students can build onto and transform their college diploma into a degree.

Agricultural Business introduces current issues, challenges and opportunities in the agricultural and related sectors to prepare you for a rewarding career. The only program of its kind in Canada, Bioveterinary Science will give you the foundation for a career in veterinary medicine and opens up a world of other exciting opportunities. Offered at our Agricultural Campus in Truro, N.S., this degree program is the starting point for your animal-related career.

What will I learn?
Dalhousie's Bioveterinary Science program blends a core general science education with specialized courses in animal health and welfare. Our 200-hectare farm and high-tech laboratories give you opportunities in experiential learning. You’ll work directly with animals like sheep, dairy cows, fish, chickens and more in both an academic and research capacity.

Students begin by taking foundation courses in biology, chemistry, math, physics, genetics, biochemistry and cell biology. These courses will give you the background for more in-depth studies in topics such as veterinary epidemiology, animal health and nutrition and mammalian physiology. You’ll leave with an in-depth knowledge of animals and focus on issues related to their health and care.
